Effects of turbulence in the atmosphere of Venus on Pioneer Venus radio, phase 2
Two problems related to the effects of turbulence in the atmosphere of Venus on the Pioneer entry probe radio link were studied. In the first problem, the cross correlation between the log amplitude and phase fluctuations of the Pioneer Venus communications link is examined. Data show that for fluctuation frequencies above approximately 1 Hz there is little or no correlation. For frequencies below this region the correlation is weak and the square root of the coherence has a peak value close to 0.65. The second problem consists of interferring turbulence characteristics of the Venus atmosphere from the Mariner 5 phase fluctuations. Data show that with the data processing techniques developed and currently available, the phase error due to oscillator drift, assumed trajectory delay, and spline curve fit exceed the turbulence induced fluctuations. Results show that it is not possible to interfere with the turbulence characteristics from Mariner 5 phase fluctuations
Bell inequality for pairs of particle-number-superselection-rule restricted states
Proposals for Bell inequality tests on systems restricted by superselection
rules often require operations that are difficult to implement in practice. In
this paper, we derive a new Bell inequality, where pairs of states are used to
by-pass the superselection rule. In particular, we focus on mode entanglement
of an arbitrary number of massive particles and show that our Bell inequality
detects the entanglement in the pair when other inequalities fail. However, as
the number of particles in the system increases, the violation of our Bell
inequality decreases due to the restriction in the measurement space caused by
the superselection rule. This Bell test can be implemented using techniques

Detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using an optical fibre long period grating with a calixarene anchored mesoporous thin film
A long period grating (LPG) modified with a mesoporous film infused with a functional compound, calix[4]arene, was employed for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The mesoporous film consisted of an inorganic part, of SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) along with an organic moiety of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) polycation PAH, which was finally infused with functional compound, p-sulphanatocalix[4]arene (CA[4]). The LPG sensor was designed to operate at the phase matching turning point to provide the highest sensitivity. The sensing mechanism is based on the measurement of the refractive index (RI) change induced by the complexion of the VOCs with calix[4]arene (CA). The LPG modified with 5 cycles of (SiO2 NPs/PAH)5PAA responded to exposure to chloroform and benzene vapours. The sensitivity to humidity as an interfering parameter was also investigated
Degreed and Nondegreed Licensed Clinical Social Workers: An Exploratory Study
This exploratory study focuses on 155 randomly selected respondents who obtained a clinical license in social work with or without the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Ninety-seven of the respondents obtained a license with an MSW degree;fifty-eight obtained a license without the MSW degree. The two groups of respondents completed a survey instrument that explored their basic demographic characteristics, their attitudes and behaviors related to practice, and their philosophical and political attitudes toward practice. The researchers found few statistically significant differences between the two groups of respondents. The article offers implications of these findings for the profession of social work
Symbolic Violence and Social Control in the Post-Total Institution Era
Subsequent to the passage of the Community Mental Health Act in 1963, the Total Institutions described by Goffman have for the most part disappeared. Nonetheless, many writers charge that social control is still the primary function of mental health programs, even those that are identified as community-based. The new methods of control have not received widespread attention. In community-based programs control is operationalized in the form of symbolic violence. This paper examines the various factors that contribute to this style of violence
Evidence of metallic clustering in annealed Ga1-xMnxAs from atypical scaling behavior of the anomalous Hall coefficient
We report on the anomalous Hall coefficient and longitudinal resistivity
scaling relationships on a series of annealed Ga1-xMnxAs epilayers (x~0.055).
As-grown samples exhibit scaling parameter n of ~ 1. Near the optimal annealing
temperature, we find n ~ 2 to be consistent with recent theories on the
intrinsic origins of anomalous Hall Effect in Ga1-xMnxAs. For annealing
temperatures far above the optimum, we note n > 3, similar behavior to certain
inhomogeneous systems. This observation of atypical behavior agrees well with
characteristic features attributable to spherical resonance from metallic
inclusions from optical spectroscopy measurements.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Influence of FK 506 (tacrolimus) on circulating CD4 <sup>+</sup> t cells expressing cd25 and cd45ra antigens in 19 patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis participating in an open label drug safety trial
We have taken the opportunity of a clinical trial of the potential efficacy and safety of FK 506 (tacrolimus) in chronic progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) to examine the influence of this potent new immunosuppressant on circulating T-lymphocytes in an otherwise healthy non-transplant population. Peripheral blood levels of subsets of CD4+ T lymphocytes expressing the activation molecule interleukin-2 receptor (p55 α chain; CD25) or the CD45RA isoform were determined sequentially in 19 patients that were treated continuously with oral FK 506 (starting dose 0.15 mg/kg/day) for 12 months. No significant change in the proportion of circulating CD25 + CD4+ cells was observed over the study period in which the mean trough plasma FK 506 level rose from 0.3 ±0.2 to 0.5 ±0.4 ng/ml. There was also no significant effect of FK 506 on the percentage of CD45RA + CD4 + cells in the peripheral blood at 12 months compared with pretreatment values. Analysis of a subgroup of 7 patients, who showed a sustained reduction in CD25 + CD4+ cells and a reciprocal increase in CD45RA* CD4 * cells for at least 6 months after start of treatment, did not reveal any difference in disability at one year compared with the treatment group as a whole. The side effects of FK 506 were mild and the overall degree of disability estimated by the mean Kurtzke expanded disability status scale (EDSS) score or the ambulation index did not deteriorate significantly in the 19 patients studied over the 12 months of FK 506 administration. © 1994 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted
Identification of the Beutler-Fano formula in eigenphase shifts and eigentime delays near a resonance
Eigenphase shifts and eigentime delays near a resonance for a system of one
discrete state and two continua are shown to be functionals of the Beutler-
Fano formulas using appropriate dimensionless energy units and line profile
indices. Parameters responsible for the avoided crossing of eigenphase shifts
and eigentime delays are identified. Similarly, parameters responsible for the
eigentime delays due to a frame change are identified. With the help of new
parameters, an analogy with the spin model is pursued for the S matrix and time
delay matrix. The time delay matrix is shown to comprise three terms, one due
to resonance, one due to a avoided crossing interaction, and one due to a frame
change. It is found that the squared sum of time delays due to the avoided
