Risk map as a library management information dashboard: a case study in adapting a configural display
In this paper, we report on our application of Cognitive Work Analysis to create an Abstraction Hierarchy model that helps librarians identify key functional relationships for managing the overall performance of a library. By themselves, functional relationships are not as useful in providing insights into the reasons for good or poor performance. However, when these functional relationships are set against the context of system invariants and constraints, they can provide library managers information useful for diagnosis and localization of problems. We propose the Risk Map visualization technique as an information dashboard to cognitively access these functional relationships. Furthermore, when these functional relationships are portrayed over time, trends and patterns can be detected with relative ease
Behavioural markers: bridging the gap between art of analysis and science of analytics in criminal intelligence
Studying how intelligence analysts use interaction in visualization systems is an important part of evaluating how well these interactions support analysis needs, like generating insights or performing tasks. Intelligence analysis is inherently a fluid activity involving transitions between mental and interaction states through analytic processes. A gap exists to complement these transitions at micro-analytic level during data exploration or task performance. We propose Behavioural markers (BMs) which are representatives of the action choices that analysts make during their analytical processes as the bridge between human cognition and computation through semantic interaction. A low level semantic action sequence computation technique has been proposed to extract these BMs from captured process log. Our proposed computational technique can supplement the problems of existing qualitative approaches to extract such BMs
A pulsed Sagnac source of narrowband polarization-entangled photons
We demonstrate pulsed operation of a bidirectionally pumped polarization
Sagnac interferometric down-conversion source and its generation of narrowband,
high-visibility polarization-entangled photons. Driven by a narrowband,
mode-locked pump at 390.35 nm, the phase-stable Sagnac source with a type-II
phase-matched periodically poled KTiOPO crystal is capable of producing
0.01 entangled pair per pulse in a 0.15-nm bandwidth centered at 780.7 nm with
1 mW of average pump power at a repetition rate of 31.1 MHz. We have achieved a
mean photon-pair generation rate of as high as 0.7 pair per pulse, at which
multi-pair events dominate and significantly reduce the two-photon
quantum-interference visibility. For low generation probability , the
reduced visibility is independent of the throughput efficiency and
of the polarization analysis basis, which can be utilized to yield an accurate
estimate of the generation rate . At low we have characterized
the source entanglement quality in three different ways: average
quantum-interference visibility of 99%, the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt
parameter of , and quantum state tomography with 98.85%
singlet-state fidelity. The narrowband pulsed Sagnac source of entangled
photons is suitable for use in quantum information processing applications such

Direct observation of voids in the vacancy excess region of ion bombarded silicon
The results reported in this letter indicate that the spatial separation of the vacancy and interstitial excesses which result from ion bombardment gives rise to stable voids upon annealing at 850 °C even for implants where the projected ion range is only of the order of a few thousand Ångstrom. Such voids have been observed directly by transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, in cases where both voids and interstitial-based defects are present at different depths, it is found that Au has a strong preference for decorating void surfaces and hence Au can, indeed, be used as a selective detector of open volume defects in Si.One of the authors ~J.W.-L.!

The influence of the cluster environment on the star formation efficiency of 12 Virgo spiral galaxies
The influence of the environment on gas surface density and star formation
efficiency of cluster spiral galaxies is investigated. We extend previous work
on radial profiles by a pixel-to pixel analysis looking for asymmetries due to
environmental interactions. The star formation rate is derived from GALEX UV
and Spitzer total infrared data. As in field galaxies, the star formation rate
for most Virgo galaxies is approximately proportional to the molecular gas
mass. Except for NGC 4438, the cluster environment does not affect the star
formation efficiency with respect to the molecular gas. Gas truncation is not
associated with major changes in the total gas surface density distribution of
the inner disk of Virgo spiral galaxies. In three galaxies, possible increases
in the molecular fraction and the star formation efficiency with respect to the
total gas, of factors of 1.5 to 2, are observed on the windward side of the
galactic disk. A significant increase of the star formation efficiency with
respect to the molecular gas content on the windward side of ram
pressure-stripped galaxies is not observed. The ram-pressure stripped
extraplanar gas of 3 highly inclined spiral galaxies shows a depressed star
formation efficiency with respect to the total gas, and one of them (NGC 4438)
shows a depressed rate even with respect to the molecular gas. The
interpretation is that stripped gas loses the gravitational confinement and
associated pressure of the galactic disk, and the gas flow is diverging, so the
gas density decreases and the star formation rate drops. However, the stripped
extraplanar gas in one highly inclined galaxy (NGC 4569) shows a normal star
formation efficiency with respect to the total gas. We propose this galaxy is
different because it is observed long after peak pressure, and its extraplanar

Odontoameloblastoma with extensive chondroid matrix deposition in a guinea pig
Odontoameloblastomas (previously incorporated within ameloblastic odontomas) are matrix-producing odontogenic mixed tumors and are closely related in histologic appearance to the 2 other types of matrix-producing odontogenic mixed tumors: odontomas and ameloblastic fibro-odontomas. The presence or absence of intralesional, induced non-neoplastic tissue must be accounted for in the diagnosis. Herein we describe a naturally occurring odontoameloblastoma with extensive chondroid cementum deposition in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). Microscopically, the mass featured palisading neoplastic odontogenic epithelium closely apposed to ribbons and rings of a pink dental matrix (dentinoid), alongside extensive sheets and aggregates of chondroid cementum. The final diagnosis was an odontoameloblastoma given the abundance of odontogenic epithelium in association with dentinoid but a paucity of pulp ectomesenchyme. Chondroid cementum is an expected anatomical feature of cavies, and its presence within the odontoameloblastoma was interpreted as a response of the ectomesenchyme of the dental follicle to the described neoplasm. Our case illustrates the inductive capabilities of odontoameloblastomas while highlighting species-specific anatomy that has resulted in a histologic appearance unique to cavies and provides imaging and histologic data to aid diagnosis of these challenging lesions
Information layering to de-clutter displays in emergency ambulance dispatch.
In this paper we report on a study to examine the usefulness of the MLD (Multi-Layered Display) as a device for creating physically distinct but visually overlapping information, what we refer to as 'information layering'. The technique was applied to emergency ambulance control, as a method for reducing visual clutter and information complexity in displays used by controllers. The results of the study show that participants completing simulated dispatch tasks in the MLD condition performed better on all categories of task difficulty compared to participants using a standard single layer display. However the improvements in performance were not significantly different
High p_T Triggered Delta-eta,Delta-phi Correlations over a Broad Range in Delta-eta
The first measurement of pseudorapidity (Delta-eta) and azimuthal angle
(Delta-phi) correlations between high transverse momentum charged hadrons (p_T
> 2.5 GeV/c) and all associated particles is presented at both short- (small
Delta-eta) and long-range (large Delta-eta) over a continuous pseudorapidity
acceptance (-4<Delta-eta<2). In these proceedings, the various near- and
away-side features of the correlation structure are discussed as a function of
centrality in Au+Au collisions measured by PHOBOS at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. In
particular, this measurement allows a much more complete determination of the
longitudinal extent of the ridge structure, first observed by the STAR
collaboration over a limited eta range. In central collisions the ridge
persists to at least Delta-eta=4, diminishing in magnitude as collisions become
