Effect of Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction on magnetic vortex
The effect of the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction on the vortex in magnetic
microdisk was investigated by micro magnetic simulation based on the Landau
Lifshitz Gilbert equation. Our results show that the DM interaction modifies
the size of the vortex core, and also induces an out of plane magnetization
component at the edge and inside the disk. The DM interaction can destabilizes
one vortex handedness, generate a bias field to the vortex core and couple the
vortex polarity and chirality. This DM-interaction-induced coupling can
therefore provide a new way to control vortex polarity and chirality
Neural-Network Vector Controller for Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives: Simulated and Hardware-Validated Results
This paper focuses on current control in a permanentmagnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The paper has two main objectives: The first objective is to develop a neural-network (NN) vector controller to overcome the decoupling inaccuracy problem associated with conventional PI-based vector-control methods. The NN is developed using the full dynamic equation of a PMSM, and trained to implement optimal control based on approximate dynamic programming. The second objective is to evaluate the robust and adaptive performance of the NN controller against that of the conventional standard vector controller under motor parameter variation and dynamic control conditions by (a) simulating the behavior of a PMSM typically used in realistic electric vehicle applications and (b) building an experimental system for hardware validation as well as combined hardware and simulation evaluation. The results demonstrate that the NN controller outperforms conventional vector controllers in both simulation and hardware implementation
Partially composite 2-Higgs-doublet model
In the extra dimensional scenarios with gauge fields in the bulk, the
Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge bosons can induce Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type
attractive four-fermion interactions, which can break electroweak symmetry
dynamically with accompanying composite Higgs fields. We consider a possibility
that electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) is triggered by both a fundamental
Higgs and a composite Higgs arising in a dynamical symmetry breaking mechanism
induced by a new strong dynamics. The resulting Higgs sector is a partially
composite two-Higgs doublet model with specific boundary conditions on the
coupling and mass parameters originating at a compositeness scale .
The phenomenology of this model is discussed including the collider
phenomenology at LHC and ILC.Comment: To appear in the proceeding of LCWS06, Bangalore, Indi

A Survey for Infall Motions toward Starless Cores. II. and Mapping Observations
We present the results of an extensive mapping survey of 53 `starless' cores
in the optically thick line of CS 2-1 and the optically thin lines of N2H+ 1-0
and C18O 1-0. The purpose of this survey was to search for signatures of
extended inward motions.
This study finds 10 `strong' and 9 `probable' infall candidates, based on
analysis and on the spectral shapes of CS lines.
From our analysis of the blue-skewed CS spectra and the
parameter, we find typical infall radii of 0.06-0.14 pc. Also, using a simple
two layer radiative transfer model to fit the profiles, we derive
one-dimensional infall speeds, half of whose values lie in the range of
0.05-0.09 km s. These values are similar to those found in L1544 by
Tafalla et al., and this result confirms that infall speeds in starless cores
are generally faster than expected from ambipolar diffusion in a strongly
sub-critical core. In addition, the observed infall regions are too extended to
be consistent with the `inside-out' collapse model applied to a very low-mass
star. In the largest cores, the spatial extent of the CS spectra with infall
asymmetry is larger than the extent of the core by a factor of
2-3. All these results suggest that extended inward motions are a common
feature in starless cores, and that they could represent a necessary stage in
the condensation of a star-forming dense core.Comment: Two tex files for manuscript and tables, and 38 figures. To appear in

A Phase I Study of Abiraterone Acetate Combined with BEZ235, a Dual PI3K/mTOR Inhibitor, in Metastatic Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer.
Lessons learnedThe combination of standard dose abiraterone acetate and BEZ235, a pan-class I PI3K and mTORC1/2 inhibitor, was poorly tolerated in men with progressive mCRPC.Although the clinical development of BEZ235 has been discontinued in prostate cancer, agents that more selectively target PI3K-AKT-mTOR signaling may have a more favorable therapeutic index and should continue to be explored.BackgroundAndrogen receptor (AR) and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) signaling are two commonly perturbed pathways in prostate cancer. Preclinical data have shown that the two pathways compensate for each other when one is inhibited, and combined inhibition of AR and PI3K signaling may be a viable strategy to prevent or overcome castration resistance.MethodsThis phase I study evaluated the safety and tolerability of abiraterone acetate and prednisone combined with BEZ235, a dual PI3K and mTORC1/2 inhibitor, in men with progressive metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who have not received prior chemotherapy.ResultsSix patients (n = 6) were treated at the starting dose level of abiraterone acetate 1,000 mg with prednisone 5 mg twice daily and BEZ235 200 mg twice daily in a 3 + 3 dose escalation design. The study was terminated early because three of the six patients (50%) experienced dose-limiting toxicities: grade 3 mucositis, grade 3 hypotension, and grade 4 dyspnea and pneumonitis. All six patients had previously progressed on abiraterone/prednisone. The median treatment duration was 27 days (range: 3-130 days). No prostate-specific antigen (PSA) decline or objective response were observed.ConclusionThe combination of standard-dose abiraterone/prednisone with BEZ235 200 mg twice daily was poorly tolerated in patients with mCRPC. The on-target and off-target effects of dual PI3K and mTORC inhibition likely contributed to the unacceptable toxicity profile. The Oncologist 2017;22:503-e43
Comment on ``BCS to Bose-Einstein crossover phase diagram at zero temperature for a d_{x^2-y^2} order parameter superconductor: Dependence on the tight-binding structure''
The work by Soares et al. [Phys. Rev. B 65, 174506 (2002)] investigates the
BCS-BE crossover for d-wave pairing in the 2-dimensional attractive Hubbard
model. Contrary to their claims, we found that a non-pairing region does not
exist in the density vs coupling phase diagram. The gap parameter at T=0, as
obtained by solving analytically as well as numerically the BCS equations, is
in fact finite for any non-zero density and coupling, even in the weak-coupling
regime.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Model-based spacecraft and mission design for the evaluation of technology
In order to meet the future vision of robotic missions, engineers will face intricate mission concepts, new operational approaches, and technologies that have yet to be developed. The concept of smaller, model driven projects helps this transition by including life-cycle cost as part of the decision making process. For example, since planetary exploration missions have cost ceilings and short development periods, heritage flight hardware is utilized. However, conceptual designs that rely solely on heritage technology will result in estimates that may not be truly representative of the actual mission being designed and built. The Laboratory for Spacecraft and Mission Design (LSMD) at the California Institute of Technology is developing integrated concurrent models for mass and cost estimations. The purpose of this project is to quantify the infusion of specific technologies where the data would be useful in guiding technology developments leading up to a mission. This paper introduces the design-to-cost model to determine the implications of various technologies on the spacecraft system in a collaborative engineering environment. In addition, comparisons of the benefits of new or advanced technologies for future deep space missions are examined
Traversable Wormholes Construction in 2+1 Dimensions
We study traversable Lorentzian wormholes in the three-dimensional low energy
string theory by adding some matter source involving a dilaton field. It will
be shown that there are two-different types of wormhole solutions such as BTZ
and black string wormholes depending on the dilaton backgrounds, respectively.
We finally obtain the desirable solutions which confine exotic matter near the
throat of wormhole by adjusting NS charge.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, JHEP style, one reference adde
