    Semiparametric Bayesian Time-Space Analysis of Unemployment Duration

    In this paper, we analyze unemployment duration in Germany with official data from the German Federal Employment Office for the years 1980-1995. Conventional hazard rate models for leaving unemployment cannot cope with simultaneous and flexible fitting of duration dependence, nonlinear covariate effects, trend and seasonal calendar time components and a large number of regional effects. We apply a semiparametric hierarchical Bayesian modelling approach that is suitable for time-space analysis of unemployment duration by simultaneously including and estimating effects of several time scales, regional variation and further covariates. Inference is fully Bayesian and uses recent Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques

    Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption investigations of the interaction of methanol with a graphite surface

    Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) have been used to investigate the adsorption of methanol (CH3OH) on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface. RAIRS shows that CH3OH is physisorbed at all exposures and that crystalline CH3OH can be formed, provided that the surface temperature and coverage are high enough. It is not possible to distinguish CH3OH that is closely associated with the HOPG surface from CH3OH adsorbed in multilayers using RAIRS. In contrast, TPD data show three peaks for the desorption of CH3OH. Initial adsorption leads to the observation of a peak assigned to the desorption of a monolayer. Subsequent adsorption leads to the formation of multilayers on the surface and two TPD peaks are observed which can be assigned to the desorption of multilayer CH3OH. The first of these shows a fractional order desorption, assigned to the presence of hydrogen bonding in the overlayer. The higher temperature multilayer desorption peak is only observed following very high exposures of CH3OH to the surface and can be assigned to the desorption of crystalline CH3OH.     Green's Functions from Quantum Cluster Algorithms

    We show that cluster algorithms for quantum models have a meaning independent of the basis chosen to construct them. Using this idea, we propose a new method for measuring with little effort a whole class of Green's functions, once a cluster algorithm for the partition function has been constructed. To explain the idea, we consider the quantum XY model and compute its two point Green's function in various ways, showing that all of them are equivalent. We also provide numerical evidence confirming the analytic arguments. Similar techniques are applicable to other models. In particular, in the recently constructed quantum link models, the new technique allows us to construct improved estimators for Wilson loops and may lead to a very precise determination of the glueball spectrum.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX, with four figures.     Critical exponents of a three dimensional O(4) spin model

    By Monte Carlo simulation we study the critical exponents governing the transition of the three-dimensional classical O(4) Heisenberg model, which is considered to be in the same universality class as the finite-temperature QCD with massless two flavors. We use the single cluster algorithm and the histogram reweighting technique to obtain observables at the critical temperature. After estimating an accurate value of the inverse critical temperature \Kc=0.9360(1), we make non-perturbative estimates for various critical exponents by finite-size scaling analysis. They are in excellent agreement with those obtained with the 4−ϵ4-\epsilon expansion method with errors reduced to about halves of them.Comment: 25 pages with 8 PS figures, LaTeX, UTHEP-28

    We study a generalization of Swendsen-Wang algorithm suited for Potts models with next-next-neighborhood interactions. Using the embedding technique proposed by Wolff we test it on the Symanzik improved bidimensional non-linear σ\sigma model. For some long range observables we find a little slowing down exponent (z≃0.3z \simeq 0.3) that we interpret as an effect of the partial frustration of the induced spin model.Comment: Self extracting archive fil

    This simulation study modified the repeated measures mean difference effect size, d=RM , for scenarios with unequal pre- and post-test score variances. Relative parameter and SE bias were calculated for dRM ≠ versus dRM = . Results consistently favored d≠RM over d=RM with worse positive parameter and negative SE bias identified for d=RM for increasingly heterogeneous variance conditions
