RootJS: Node.js Bindings for ROOT 6

We present rootJS, an interface making it possible to seamlessly integrate ROOT 6 into applications written for Node.js, the JavaScript runtime platform increasingly commonly used to create high-performance Web applications. ROOT features can be called both directly from Node.js code and by JIT-compiling C++ macros. All rootJS methods are invoked asynchronously and support callback functions, allowing non-blocking operation of Node.js applications using them. Last but not least, our bindings have been designed to platform-independent and should therefore work on all systems supporting both ROOT 6 and Node.js. Thanks to rootJS it is now possible to create ROOT-aware Web applications taking full advantage of the high performance and extensive capabilities of Node.js. Examples include platforms for the quality assurance of acquired, reconstructed or simulated data, book-keeping and e-log systems, and even Web browser-based data visualisation and analysis.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure. The dynamical balance, transport and circulation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

The physical ingredients of the ACC circulation are reviewed. A picture of thecirculation is sketched by means of recent observations of the WOCE decade. Wepresent and discuss the role of forcing functions (wind stress, surfacebuoyancy flux) in the balance of the (quasi)-zonal flow, the meridionalcirculation and their relation to the ACC transport. Emphasis will be on theinterrelation of the zonal momentum balance and the meridional circulation, theimportance of diapycnal mixing and eddy processes. Finally, new model conceptsare described: a model of the ACC transport dependence on wind stress andbuoyancy flux, based on linear wave theory; and a model of the meridionaloverturning of the Southern Ocean, based on zonally averaged dynamics with eddyparameterization

Can the Balanced Scorecard Help in Designing Conference Calls? The Effect of Balanced Information Composition on the Cost of Capital

Most recent studies on conference calls focus on the costs for firms that can arise from the calls' open nature. We study the benefits of conference calls and hypothesize that firms could use the balanced scorecard concept as a framework for presenting the information (i.e. balanced information composition) in conference calls to lower the cost of capital. Our results show a negative association between a more balanced information composition in conference calls and a firm's cost of capital. Additional tests substantiate that the effect of such a balanced information composition on the cost of capital is driven by a reduction in information asymmetry. Overall, the findings suggest that firms can benefit from the balanced scorecard concept by using it as a framework for preparing their conference calls

Arbeitsgelegenheiten in der Entgeltvariante : viele Zielgruppen werden noch vernachlässigt

"Arbeitsgelegenheiten in der Entgeltvariante stehen seit Einführung des SGB II im Jahre 2005 als ein Instrument zur Verfügung, mit dem die Beschäftigungsfähigkeit arbeitsloser Bezieher von ALG II erhöht werden soll. Im ersten Jahr wurden über 25.000 Hilfebedürftige durch dieses Instrument gefördert. Wir betrachten in dem Beitrag, wie Arbeitsgelegenheiten in der Entgeltvariante ausgestaltet sind und welche Personengruppen gefördert werden. Im Gegensatz zum 'Ein-Euro-Job' sind diese Arbeitsgelegenheiten in der Regel Vollzeitstellen und unterliegen der Beitragspflicht zur Arbeitslosenversicherung. Die Teilnahme an solchen Maßnahmen dauert häufig nicht länger als sechs Monate und nur in ganz wenigen Fällen länger als ein Jahr. Wir gehen insbesondere der Frage nach, ob die vorgeschriebene Nachrangigkeit von Arbeitsgelegenheiten gegenüber Arbeit, Ausbildung und anderen Maßnahmen in einer Konzentration der Förderung auf Problemgruppen des Arbeitsmarktes zum Ausdruck kommt. Dies ist allerdings für viele Gruppen mit geringen Chancen auf eine Eingliederung in den ersten Arbeitsmarkt wie Ältere nicht der Fall. Unsere Auswertungen auf der Grundlage von Personendaten der Statistik der Bundesagentur für Arbeit kommen zu dem Ergebnis, dass einzig die Zielgruppe der Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen unter 25 Jahren besonders stark gefördert wird. Dabei liegt eine noch höhere Konzentration auf diese Zielgruppe vor als bei den Zusatzjobs. Dies ist möglicherweise mit den höheren Erwartungen an die Bruttoeingliederungserfolge zu erklären."
