Teaching for excellence: honors pedagogies revealed

What are characteristics of honors pedagogies in higher education? What are the teaching strategies that are particularly relevant and successful for academically gifted and motivated students? In spite of the substantial body of literature about the practice of honors education, very little systematic and empirical research has been done about honors pedagogies. The spread of honors programs, designed for enhanced educational opportunities and outcomes, makes further research critical. The objective of this thesis was twofold. The first aim was to conceptualize and operationalize honors pedagogies using a dimensional approach. Thus, a theoretical and conceptual framework for honors pedagogies was developed. The second aim was to extend the state of knowledge on honors teaching by assessing this framework by means of empirical research. In this study, three different strands of academic work were explored: honors literature, publications about giftedness and studies about motivation, specifically self-determination theory. This literature survey brought to light three pillars of honors pedagogy: creating community, enhancing academic competence and offering freedom. This study points out the similar and different approaches and dispositions in American and Dutch honors teaching for academically gifted and motivated students. Have characteristic forms of teaching and learning been developed within honors that are similar from one honors teacher to the next and across institutions? The answer is yes. This study uses a mixed methodology, combining questionnaires among American and Dutch honors teachers and interviews with American honors teachers. To find out to what extent American and Dutch honors teachers have similar or different approaches and dispositions in their honors teaching a comparison was facilitated by the questionnaires. Given the longstanding honors tradition in the U.S.A., the interviews were conducted only with American teachers. Data collection in the U.S.A. took place in 2006 during the annual conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council. In all, 127 honors teachers filled in the questionnaire, and 30 interviews were conducted. In total at least 75 American higher educational institutions are represented. In the Netherlands, data collection took place in 2007: eleven research universities offered honors programs. All honors teachers (N = 768) involved received a digital questionnaire; 313 teachers returned it completed. Teachers make a clear distinction between honors teaching and regular teaching. They perceive the three approaches – creating community, enhancing academic competence and offering freedom – as the pillars of honors pedagogies. Teachers see offering freedom as important for honors classes while not for regular classes. Enhancing academic competence is important in honors and in regular education, however the way is different: In honors education, there is an emphasis on research activities and more interdisciplinary projects. The relevance of this study is twofold. First, research on honors education is limited with regard to systematically uncovering and describing honors pedagogies. That is why this inquiry has academic relevance. Secondly, this study serves a practical purpose. Honors education is spreading around the globe. This expansion has created a need for researched-based teaching approaches that may be used in honors faculty development

Qualities Honours Students Look for in Faculty and Courses

The article presents information on a research paper which analyzes the expectations of honors students from their courses in the Netherlands. The paper, based on the results of three surveys, says that the honors students not only look for academic competence but also seek individual freedom combined with a sense of community. It says that these students are motivated by knowledge, learning, and intellectual challenge, rather than grades and future careers like their non-honors peers

Leerpunten uit talentprogramma's in het bedrijfsleven voor honoursprogramma's in het hoger onderwijs: een verkenning

Programma's voor getalenteerde studenten in het hoger onderwijs, ook wel honoursonderwijs genoemd, staan in Nederland op dit moment sterk in de belangstelling. Om inspiratie op te doen voor de opzet van dergelijke progÍamma's is een inventariserend onderzoek uitgevoerd naar de opzet, uitvoering en achtergronden van talentprogramma's in het bedrijfsleven. Vervolgens is verkend welke leerpunten er uit de resultaten van dit inventariserende onderzoek te halen zijn voor de ontwikkeling en uitvoering van honoursprogramma's in het hoger onderwijs

Excellentieprogramma's in het HBO in Nederland. Voorpublicatie van de landelijke inventarisatie 2009-2010

Dit is een voorpublicatie van het volledige rapport over de inventarisatie van excellentieprogramma’s in 2009-2010. In deze voorpublicatie zal alleen worden ingegaan op het aantal programma’s en het aantal studenten. De inventarisatie is bedoeld om in kaart te brengen welke Honours programma’s en excellentieprogramma’s er in 2010 in het HBO in de bachelorfase zijn. In 2007 is zo’n inventarisatie ook gedaan (Groothengel & Van Eijl, 2008) en deze inventarisatie kan gezien worden als een vervolg hierop. Zo kan inzicht worden verkregen in de ontwikkelingen die gaande zijn binnen HBO instellingen wat betreft excellentieonderwijs. In hoeverre heeft excellentieonderwijs binnen het HBO een plek gekregen? Welke programma’s worden aangeboden binnen het HBO en waar worden zij door gekenmerkt? Hoeveel studenten nemen deel aan Honours programma’s binnen het HBO? Deze inventarisatie is bedoeld om op deze vragen een antwoord te geven en om een overzicht te krijgen van de Nederlandse situatie op het gebied van excellentieonderwijs, waarbij naast initiatieven die zijn ontplooid binnen instellingen ook twee interventies zijn gepleegd door het ministerie van OCW, namelijk het Ruim Baan voor Talent programma en het Sirius programma. Deze voorpublicatie geeft een eerste analyse van de geïnventariseerde gegevens met betrekking tot het aantal programma’s en het aantal studente

Ontwikkeling honours ondersteund door onderzoek

Het Instituut voor Sportstudies van de Hanzehogeschool Groningen (HG)is in het voorjaar van 2009 gestart met een honoursprogramma voor een groep eerste jaarsstudenten. Daar ging een uitgebreid traject aan vooraf met een behoefte peiling onder potentiële honoursstudenten en een quickscan in het werkveld over opvattingen ten aanzien van professionele excellentie. Mission, Performance Indicators and Assesment in US-honors: a view from the Netherlands

Onderwijs en talentontwikkeling. Op weg naar een nieuwe didactiek voor onderwijs aan getalenteerde studenten

Een nieuw onderwijsparadigma doet zijn intrede in het hoger onderwijs in Nederland. Waar tien jaar geleden studeerbaarheid het centrale perspectief was is dat nu talentontwikkeling. In dit perspectief hebben studenten vooral talent dat kan en moet worden ontwikkeld. Wat betekent dit voor de didactische benadering van studenten? In de workshop zal worden ingegaan op vragen als: hoe ontwikkel je in de context van een honoursprogramma op een goede manier aanwezig talent en wat zijn de verschillen met regulier onderwijs? Tijdens de workshop zullen deelnemers aan enkele vragen m.b.t. onderwijs in talentontwikkeling werken. Daarna is er feedback vanuit de resultaten van een onderzoek hierover bij docenten van een honoursprogramma
