Trade-offs, condition dependence and stopover site selection by migrating sandpipers
Western sandpipers Calidris mauri on southward migration fly over the Gulf of Alaska to the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, where they stop for a few days to replenish reserves before continuing. In the Strait, individuals captured on the extensive tidal mudflats of the Fraser estuary (∼25000 ha) are significantly heavier (2.71 g, or >10% of lean body mass) than those captured on the small (<100 ha) mudflat of nearby Sidney Island. Previous work has shown that the difference cannot be attributed to seasonal timing, size, age or gender effects, and here we compare predictions made by six hypotheses about a diverse set of data to explain why, partway through a migratory journey of ∼10000 km, birds have such different body masses at two stopover sites within 40 km of each other. The ‘trade-off’ hypothesis – that the large Fraser estuary offers safety from predators, but a lower fattening rate, while the small Sidney Island site is more dangerous, but offers a higher fattening rate – made six successful predictions, all of which were upheld by the data. All other hypotheses failed at least one prediction. We infer that calidrid sandpipers arriving in the Strait of Georgia with little fat remaining (and therefore low body mass) choose to take advantage of the high feeding rate at small sites like Sidney Island because they are less vulnerable to avian predators than are individuals with higher fat reserves, who instead elect to feed at large open sites like the Fraser estuary mudflats
Chaotic memristor
We suggest and experimentally demonstrate a chaotic memory resistor
(memristor). The core of our approach is to use a resistive system whose
equations of motion for its internal state variables are similar to those
describing a particle in a multi-well potential. Using a memristor emulator,
the chaotic memristor is realized and its chaotic properties are measured. A
Poincar\'{e} plot showing chaos is presented for a simple nonautonomous circuit
involving only a voltage source directly connected in series to a memristor and
a standard resistor. We also explore theoretically some details of this system,
plotting the attractor and calculating Lyapunov exponents. The multi-well
potential used resembles that of many nanoscale memristive devices, suggesting
the possibility of chaotic dynamics in other existing memristive systems.Comment: Applied Physics A (in press
A Connection between Twistors and Superstring Sigma Models on Coset Superspaces
We consider superstring sigma models that are based on coset superspaces G/H
in which H arises as the fixed point set of an order-4 automorphism of G. We
show by means of twistor theory that the corresponding first-order system,
consisting of the Maurer-Cartan equations and the equations of motion, arises
from a dimensional reduction of some generalised self-dual Yang-Mills equations
in eight dimensions. Such a relationship might help shed light on the explicit
construction of solutions to the superstring equations including their hidden
symmetry structures and thus on the properties of their gauge theory duals.Comment: v3: 16 pages, typos fixed and minor clarifications adde
Singular open book structures from real mappings
We prove extensions of Milnor's theorem for germs with nonisolated
singularity and use them to find new classes of genuine real analytic mappings
with positive dimensional singular locus \Sing \psi \subset
\psi^{-1}(0), for which the Milnor fibration exists and yields an open book
structure with singular binding.Comment: more remark

Non-Abelian Vortices, Super-Yang-Mills Theory and Spin(7)-Instantons
We consider a complex vector bundle E endowed with a connection A over the
eight-dimensional manifold R^2 x G/H, where G/H = SU(3)/U(1)xU(1) is a
homogeneous space provided with a never integrable almost complex structure and
a family of SU(3)-structures. We establish an equivalence between G-invariant
solutions A of the Spin(7)-instanton equations on R^2 x G/H and general
solutions of non-Abelian coupled vortex equations on R^2. These vortices are
BPS solitons in a d=4 gauge theory obtained from N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills
theory in ten dimensions compactified on the coset space G/H with an
SU(3)-structure. The novelty of the obtained vortex equations lies in the fact
that Higgs fields, defining morphisms of vector bundles over R^2, are not
holomorphic in the generic case. Finally, we introduce BPS vortex equations in
N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and show that they have the same feature.Comment: 14 pages; v2: typos fixed, published versio
Formation of superdense hadronic matter in high energy heavy-ion collisions
We present the detail of a newly developed relativistic transport model (ART
1.0) for high energy heavy-ion collisions. Using this model, we first study the
general collision dynamics between heavy ions at the AGS energies. We then show
that in central collisions there exists a large volume of sufficiently
long-lived superdense hadronic matter whose local baryon and energy densities
exceed the critical densities for the hadronic matter to quark-gluon plasma
transition. The size and lifetime of this matter are found to depend strongly
on the equation of state. We also investigate the degree and time scale of
thermalization as well as the radial flow during the expansion of the
superdense hadronic matter. The flow velocity profile and the temperature of
the hadronic matter at freeze-out are extracted. The transverse momentum and
rapidity distributions of protons, pions and kaons calculated with and without
the mean field are compared with each other and also with the preliminary data
from the E866/E802 collaboration to search for experimental observables that
are sensitive to the equation of state. It is found that these inclusive,
single particle observables depend weakly on the equation of state. The
difference between results obtained with and without the nuclear mean field is
only about 20\%. The baryon transverse collective flow in the reaction plane is
also analyzed. It is shown that both the flow parameter and the strength of the
``bounce-off'' effect are very sensitive to the equation of state. In
particular, a soft equation of state with a compressibility of 200 MeV results
in an increase of the flow parameter by a factor of 2.5 compared to the cascade
case without the mean field. This large effect makes it possible to distinguish
the predictions from different theoretical models and to detect the signaturesComment: 55 pages, latex, + 39 figures available upon reques
Spectral analysis and zeta determinant on the deformed spheres
We consider a class of singular Riemannian manifolds, the deformed spheres
, defined as the classical spheres with a one parameter family of
singular Riemannian structures, that reduces for to the classical metric.
After giving explicit formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the
metric Laplacian , we study the associated zeta functions
. We introduce a general method to deal with some
classes of simple and double abstract zeta functions, generalizing the ones
appearing in . An application of this method allows to
obtain the main zeta invariants for these zeta functions in all dimensions, and
in particular and . We give
explicit formulas for the zeta regularized determinant in the low dimensional
cases, , thus generalizing a result of Dowker \cite{Dow1}, and we
compute the first coefficients in the expansion of these determinants in powers
of the deformation parameter .Comment: 1 figur

A Phenomenological Analysis of Gluon Mass Effects in Inclusive Radiative Decays of the and $\Upsilon
The shapes of the inclusive photon spectra in the processes \Jp \to \gamma
X and \Up \to \gamma X have been analysed using all available experimental
data.
Relativistic, higher order QCD and gluon mass corrections were taken into
account in the fitted functions. Only on including the gluon mass corrections,
were consistent and acceptable fits obtained. Values of
GeV and GeV were found for the
effective gluon masses (corresponding to Born level diagrams) for the \Jp and
\Up respectively. The width ratios \Gamma(V \to {\rm hadrons})/\Gamma(V \to
\gamma+ {\rm hadrons}) V=\Jp, \Up were used to determine and . Values consistent with the current world
average were obtained only when gluon mass correction factors,
calculated using the fitted values of the effective gluon mass, were applied. A
gluon mass GeV, as suggested with these results, is consistent with
previous analytical theoretical calculations and independent phenomenological
estimates, as well as with a recent, more accurate, lattice calculation of the
gluon propagator in the infra-red region.Comment: 50 pages, 11 figures, 15 table
