Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. OGLE-1999-BUL-32: the Longest Ever Microlensing Event -- Evidence for a Stellar Mass Black Hole?
We describe the discovery of the longest microlensing event ever observed,
OGLE-1999-BUL-32, also independently identified by the MACHO collaboration as
MACHO-99-BLG-22. This unique event has an Einstein radius crossing time of 641
days. The high quality data obtained with difference image analysis shows a
small but significant parallax signature. This parallax effect allows one to
determine the Einstein radius projected onto the observer plane as rE^hat ~
29.2AU. The transverse velocity projected onto the observer plane is about
79km/s. We argue that the lens is likely to be have a mass of at least a few
solar masses, i.e., it could be a stellar black hole. The black hole hypothesis
can be tested using the astrometric microlensing signature with the soon-to-be
installed Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Deep
X-ray and radio images may also be useful for revealing the nature of the
object.Comment: submitted to Monthly Notice
Heuristic algorithm to predict the location of C^{0} separators for efficient isogeometric analysis simulations with direct solvers
We focus on two and three-dimensional isogeometric finite element method computations with tensor product Ck B-spline basis functions. We consider the computational cost of the multi-frontal direct solver algorithm executed over such tensor product grids. We present an algorithm for estimation of the number of floating-point operations per mesh node resulting from the execution of the multi-frontal solver algorithm with the ordering obtained from the element partition trees. Next, we propose an algorithm that introduces C0 separators between patches of elements of a given size based on the stimated number of flops per node. We show that the computational cost of the multi-frontal solver algorithm executed over the computational grids with C0 separators introduced is around one or two orders of magnitude lower, while the approximability of the functional space is improved. We show O(NlogN) computational complexity of the heuristic algorithm proposing the introduction of the C0 separators between the patches of elements, reducing the computational cost of the multi-frontal solver algorithm
The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Monitoring of QSO 2237+0305
We present results from 2 years of monitoring of Huchra's lens (QSO
2237+0305) with the 1.3 m Warsaw telescope on Las Campanas, Chile. Photometry
in the V band was done using a newly developed method for image subtraction.
Reliable subtraction without Fourier division removes all complexities
associated with the presence of a bright lensing galaxy. With positions of
lensed images adopted from HST measurements it is relatively easy to fit the
variable part of the flux in this system, as opposed to modeling of the
underlying galaxy. For the first time we observed smooth light variation over a
period of a few months, which can be naturally attributed to microlensing. We
also describe automated software capable of real time analysis of the images of
QSO 2237+0305. It is expected that starting from the next observing season in
1999 an alert system will be implemented for high amplification events (HAE) in
this object. Time sampling and photometric accuracy achieved should be
sufficient for early detection of caustic crossings.Comment: 8 pages (including 4 figures and table), latex, emulateapj, submitted

The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Catalog of stellar proper motions in the OGLE-II Galactic bulge fields
We present a proper motion (\mu) catalogue of 5,080,236 stars in 49 Optical
Gravitational Lensing Experiment II (OGLE-II) Galactic bulge (GB) fields,
covering a range of -11 deg. <l< 11 deg. and -6 deg. <b<3 deg., the total area
close to 11 square degrees. The proper motion measurements are based on 138 -
555 I-band images taken during four observing seasons: 1997-2000. The catalogue
stars are in the magnitude range 11 < I < 18 mag. In particular, the catalogue
includes Red Clump Giants (RCGs) and Red Giants in the GB, and main sequence
stars in the Galactic disc. The proper motions up to \mu = 500 mas/yr were
measured with the mean accuracy of 0.8-3.5 mas/yr, depending on the brightness
of a star. This catalogue may be useful for studying the kinematic of stars in
the GB and the Galactic disk.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, MNRAS in pres
Materiał i metodaCharakterystyka grup porównawczych.
RAPTOR observations of delayed explosive activity in the high-redshift gamma-ray burst GRB 060206
The RAPid Telescopes for Optical Response (RAPTOR) system at Los Alamos
National Laboratory observed GRB 060206 starting 48.1 minutes after gamma-ray
emission triggered the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on-board the Swift
satellite. The afterglow light curve measured by RAPTOR shows a spectacular
re-brightening by ~1 mag about 1 h after the trigger and peaks at R ~ 16.4 mag.
Shortly after the onset of the explosive re-brightening the OT doubled its flux
on a time-scale of about 4 minutes. The total R-band fluence received from GRB
060206 during this episode is 2.3e-9 erg/cm2. In the rest frame of the burst (z
= 4.045) this yields an isotropic equivalent energy release of ~0.7e50 erg in
just a narrow UV band 130 +/- 22 nm. We discuss the implications of RAPTOR
observations for untriggered searches for fast optical transients and studies
of GRB environments at high redshift.Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letter
Średnia wielkość ostrogi wynosiła 0,9 cm, a średnia wielkość napromienianego pola 57 cm2. Średni czas trwania objawów wynosił 32 miesiące. W 155 przypadkach było to powtórne napromienianie. W 768 przypadkach zastosowano promieniowanie X, w 18 wysokoenergetyczne fotony, w 9 elektrony, a w 3 promieniowanie gamma. W pozostałej grupie zmniejszenie bólu o więcej niż 50% w stosunku do stanu z przed leczenia osiągnięto u 42%, o mniej niż 50% u 28%, a w 30% nie odnotowano efektu przeciwbólowego.
The OGLE View of Microlensing towards the Magellanic Clouds. III. Ruling out sub-solar MACHOs with the OGLE-III LMC data
In the third part of the series presenting the Optical Gravitational Lensing
Experiment (OGLE) microlensing studies of the dark matter halo compact objects
(MACHOs) we describe results of the OGLE-III monitoring of the Large Magellanic
Cloud (LMC). This unprecedented data set contains almost continuous photometric
coverage over 8 years of about 35 million objects spread over 40 square
degrees. We report a detection of two candidate microlensing events found with
the automated pipeline and an additional two, less probable, candidate events
found manually. The optical depth derived for the two main candidates was
calculated following a detailed blending examination and detection efficiency
determination and was found to be tau=(0.16+-0.12)10^-7.
If the microlensing signal we observe originates from MACHOs it means their
masses are around 0.2 M_Sun and they compose only f=3+-2 per cent of the mass
of the Galactic Halo. However, the more likely explanation of our detections
does not involve dark matter compact objects at all and rely on natural effect
of self-lensing of LMC stars by LMC lenses. In such a scenario we can almost
completely rule out MACHOs in the sub-solar mass range with an upper limit at
f<7 per cent reaching its minimum of f<4 per cent at M=0.1 M_Sun. For masses
around M=10 M_Sun the constraints on the MACHOs are more lenient with f ~ 20
per cent. Owing to limitations of the survey there is no reasonable limit found
for heavier masses, leaving only a tiny window of mass spectrum still available
for dark matter compact objects.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. On-line data available on OGLE

Generalised Decision Level Ensemble Method for Classifying Multi-media Data
In recent decades, multimedia data have been commonly generated and used in various domains, such as in healthcare and social media due to their ability of capturing rich information. But as they are unstructured and separated, how to fuse and integrate multimedia datasets and then learn from them eectively have been a main challenge to machine learning. We present a novel generalised decision level ensemble method (GDLEM) that combines the multimedia datasets at decision level. After extracting features from each of multimedia datasets separately, the method trains models independently on each media dataset and then employs a generalised selection function to choose the appropriate models to construct a heterogeneous ensemble. The selection function is dened as a weighted combination of two criteria: the accuracy of individual models and the diversity among the models. The framework is tested on multimedia data and compared with other heterogeneous ensembles. The results show that the GDLEM is more exible and eective
The first direct detection of a gravitational micro-lens toward the Galactic bulge
We present a direct detection of the gravitational lens that caused the
microlensing event MACHO-95-BLG-37. This is the first fully resolved
microlensing system involving a source in the Galactic bulge, and the second
such system in general. The lens and source are clearly resolved in images
taken with the High Resolution Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys on
board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ~9 years after the microlensing event.
The presently available data are not sufficient for the final, unambiguous
identification of the gravitational lens and the microlensed source. While the
light curve models combined with the high resolution photometry for individual
objects indicate that the source is red and the lens is blue, the
color-magnitude diagram for the line of sight and the observed proper motions
strongly support the opposite case. The first scenario points to a metal-poor
lens with mass M = ~0.6 M_Sun at the distance D_l = ~4 kpc. In the second
scenario the lens could be a main-sequence star with M = 0.8 - 0.9 M_Sun about
half-way to the Galactic bulge or in the foreground disk, depending on the
extinction.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
