    Maxillary osteosarcoma in a beef suckler cow

    A ten-year-old beef suckler cow was referred to the Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health and Food Safety of the University of Glasgow, because of facial swelling in the region of the right maxilla. The facial swelling was first noticed three months earlier and was caused by a slow growing oral mass which contained displaced, loosely embedded teeth. The radiographic, laboratory and clinicopathological findings are described. Necropsy, gross pathology and histological findings confirmed the mass as a maxillary osteosarcoma

    Shared understanding and task-interdependence in nursing interns’ collaborative relations:A social network study of vocational health care internships in the Netherlands

    Shared understanding among collaborators is a key element of delivering successful interprofessional care and a main challenge for professional education concerns nurturing such understanding among students. We assessed how nursing students perceived different levels of shared understanding in their collaborations with others in clinical internships. We analyse the collaborative networks of interns to examine whether individual factors (attitudes, perceptions of collaborative cultures, and motivation) or relational factors among collaborators (task-interdependence, cooperation frequency, and interprofessional and hierarchical roles) affect shared understanding among 150 Dutch nursing interns and their collaborators (n = 865). Theoretically, we stress the importance of focusing on collaborative relations in interprofessional care settings. Multilevel models distinguish two levels in explaining the variation in shared understanding, nesting collaborative relationships within individuals. Results indicate merely 37.4% of found variation of shared understanding could be attributed to individual-level factors (variation between interns), while 62.6% of variation is found within interns, showing that shared understanding differs substantially between the collaborations one intern engages in. Multilevel models reveal that task-interdependence strongly predicts shared understanding in inter- and intraprofessional collaborations. We conclude that focusing on collaborative relations is essential to foster shared understanding in vocational internship programmes, and that health care organisations should pay explicit attention to task-interdependence in interns’ collaborations

    Two questions on the topology of compact energy surfaces of natural two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian systems in a magnetic field are discussed. We show that the topology of this 3-manifold (if it is not a unit tangent bundle) is uniquely determined by the Euler characteristic of the accessible region in configuration space. In this class of 3-manifolds for most cases there does not exist a transverse and complete Poincar\'e section. We show that there are topological obstacles for its existence such that only in the cases of S1×S2S^1\times S^2 and T3T^3 such a Poincar\'e section can exist.Comment: 10 pages, LaTe

    Charged rho meson production in neutrino-induced reactions at E_nu = 10 GeV

    The neutrinoproduction of charged ρ\rho mesons on nuclei and nucleons is investigated for the first time at moderate energies (≈ \approx 10 GeV), using the date obtained with SKAT bubble chamber. No strong nuclear effects are observed in ρ+\rho^+ and ρ−\rho^- production. The fractions of charged and neutral pions originating from ρ\rho decays are obtained and compared with higher energy data. From analysis of the obtained and available data on ρ+\rho^+ and K∗+K^{*+}(892) neutrinoproduction, the strangeness suppression factor in the quark string fragmentation is extracted: λs=0.18±0.03\lambda_s = 0.18\pm0.03. Estimations are obtained for cross sections of quasiexclusive single ρ+\rho^+ and coherent ρ+\rho^+ neutrinoproduction on nuclei. The estimated coherent cross section σρ+coh\sigma_{\rho^+}^{coh} = (0.29±0.16)⋅10−38\pm0.16)\cdot 10^{-38} cm2^2 is compatible with theoretical predictions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Nuclear Attenuation of Fast Hadrons Produced in Charged-Current Neutrino and Antineutrino Interactions in Neon

    The production of hadrons in charged-current (anti)neutrino interactions is studied with the bubble chamber BEBC exposed ot the CERN (anti)neutrino wide-band beam. Fast-hadron production in a neon target is found to be attennuated as compared to that in a hydrogen target. This feature is discussed within the theoretical models based on the idea of a hadron formation length. The experimental results favour the `constituent' over the `yo-yo' length concept, and suggest a quark cross-section in the order of 3mb.Comment: 14 pages + 7 figures, ps fil

    The H1 Forward Proton Spectrometer at HERA

    The forward proton spectrometer is part of the H1 detector at the HERA collider. Protons with energies above 500 GeV and polar angles below 1 mrad can be detected by this spectrometer. The main detector components are scintillating fiber detectors read out by position-sensitive photo-multipliers. These detectors are housed in so-called Roman Pots which allow them to be moved close to the circulating proton beam.
