Application of the time-dependent charge asymmetry method for longitudinal position determination in prototype proportional chambers for the PANDA experiment

    Get PDF
The PANDA collaboration intends to build a state-of-the-art detector to study the physics of antiproton annihilation in the charm mass region at the future FAIR facility at GSI, Darmstadt. One major part of the PANDA detector is the straw tube tracker. It will consist of about 6000 individual straws grouped in 11 double layers and filled with an Ar+10%CO_2 gas mixture. The required radial spatial resolution is about 150 micron. Two different methods are considered for longitudinal coordinate measurements - skewed double layers and a novel method based on the time-dependent charge asymmetry. The latter method is presented in this article.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, Preprint submitted to NIM

Intrinsic motivation and episodic memories for robot exploration of high-dimensional sensory spaces

Dieser Beitrag ist mit Zustimmung des Rechteinhabers aufgrund einer überregionalen Konsortiallizenz frei zugänglich. This work presents an architecture that generates curiosity-driven goal-directed exploration behaviours for an image sensor of a microfarming robot. A combination of deep neural networks for offline unsupervised learning of low-dimensional features from images and of online learning of shallow neural networks representing the inverse and forward kinematics of the system have been used. The artificial curiosity system assigns interest values to a set of pre-defined goals and drives the exploration towards those that are expected to maximise the learning progress. We propose the integration of an episodic memory in intrinsic motivation systems to face catastrophic forgetting issues, typically experienced when performing online updates of artificial neural networks. Our results show that adopting an episodic memory system not only prevents the computational models from quickly forgetting knowledge that has been previously acquired but also provides new avenues for modulating the balance between plasticity and stability of the models.H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actionshttps://doi.org/10.13039/100010665Horizon 2020 Framework Programmehttps://doi.org/10.13039/100010661Peer Reviewe

Observation of the out-of-plane magnetization in a mesoscopic ferromagnetic structure superjacent to a superconductor

The geometry of magnetic flux penetration in a high temperature superconductor at a buried interface was imaged using element-specific x-ray excited luminescence. We performed low temperature observation of the flux penetration in YBa2Cu3O7–δ (YBCO) at a buried interface by imaging of the perpendicular magnetization component in square Permalloy (Py) mesostructures patterned superjacent to a YBCO film. Element specific imaging below the critical temperature of YBCO reveals a cross-like geometry of the perpendicular magnetization component which is decorated by regions of alternating out-of-plane magnetization at the edges of the patterned Py structures. The cross structure can be attributed to the geometry of flux penetration originating from the superconductor and is reproduced using micromagnetic simulations. Our experimental method opens up possibilities for the investigation of flux penetration in superconductors at the nanoscale

Modeling morphological instabilities in lipid membranes with anchored amphiphilic polymers

    Get PDF
Anchoring molecules, like amphiphilic polymers, are able to dynamically regulate membrane morphology. Such molecules insert their hydrophobic groups into the bilayer, generating a local membrane curvature. In order to minimize the elastic energy penalty, a dynamic shape instability may occur, as in the case of the curvature-driven pearling instability or the polymer-induced tubulation of lipid vesicles. We review recent works on modeling of such instabilities by means of a mesoscopic dynamic model of the phase-field kind, which take into account the bending energy of lipid bilayers

Feasibility studies for the measurement of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors from p¯ p→ μ+μ- at P ¯ ANDA at FAIR

This paper reports on Monte Carlo simulation results for future measurements of the moduli of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors, | GE| and | GM| , using the p¯ p→ μ+μ- reaction at P ¯ ANDA (FAIR). The electromagnetic form factors are fundamental quantities parameterizing the electric and magnetic structure of hadrons. This work estimates the statistical and total accuracy with which the form factors can be measured at P ¯ ANDA , using an analysis of simulated data within the PandaRoot software framework. The most crucial background channel is p¯ p→ π+π-, due to the very similar behavior of muons and pions in the detector. The suppression factors are evaluated for this and all other relevant background channels at different values of antiproton beam momentum. The signal/background separation is based on a multivariate analysis, using the Boosted Decision Trees method. An expected background subtraction is included in this study, based on realistic angular distributions of the background contribution. Systematic uncertainties are considered and the relative total uncertainties of the form factor measurements are presented
