First results of observations of transient pulsar SAXJ2103.5+4545 with the INTEGRAL observatory
We present preliminary results of observations of X-ray pulsar SAX
J2103.5+4545 with INTEGRAL observatory in Dec 2002. Maps of this sky region in
energy bands 3-10, 15-40, 40-100 and 100-200 keV are presented. The source is
significantly detected up to energies of keV. The hard X-ray flux in
the 15-100 energy band is variable, that could be connected with the orbital
phase of the binary system. We roughly reconstructed the source spectrum using
its comparison to that of Crab nebula. It is shown that the parameters of the
source spectrum in 18-150 keV energy range are compatible with that obtained
earlier by RXTE observatoryComment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomy Letter
Anomalous Spin Polarization of GaAs Two-Dimensional Hole Systems
We report measurements and calculations of the spin-subband depopulation,
induced by a parallel magnetic field, of dilute GaAs two-dimensional (2D) hole
systems. The results reveal that the shape of the confining potential
dramatically affects the values of in-plane magnetic field at which the upper
spin subband is depopulated. Most surprisingly, unlike 2D electron systems, the
carrier-carrier interaction in 2D hole systems does not significantly enhance
the spin susceptibility. We interpret our findings using a multipole expansion
of the spin density matrix, and suggest that the suppression of the enhancement
is related to the holes' band structure and effective spin j=3/2.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, substantially extended discussion of result

Optical orientation of electron spins in GaAs quantum wells
We present a detailed experimental and theoretical analysis of the optical
orientation of electron spins in GaAs/AlAs quantum wells. Using time and
polarization resolved photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, the initial
degree of electron spin polarization is measured as a function of excitation
energy for a sequence of quantum wells with well widths between 63 Ang and 198
Ang. The experimental results are compared with an accurate theory of excitonic
absorption taking fully into account electron-hole Coulomb correlations and
heavy-hole light-hole coupling. We find in wide quantum wells that the measured
initial degree of polarization of the luminescence follows closely the spin
polarization of the optically excited electrons calculated as a function of
energy. This implies that the orientation of the electron spins is essentially
preserved when the electrons relax from the optically excited high-energy
states to quasi-thermal equilibrium of their momenta. Due to initial spin
relaxation, the measured polarization in narrow quantum wells is reduced by a
constant factor that does not depend on the excitation energy.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure
Tumbling of polymers in semidilute solution under shear flow
The tumbling dynamics of individual polymers in semidilute solution is
studied by large-scale non-equilibrium mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations. We
find that the tumbling time is equal to the non-equilibrium relaxation time of
the polymer end-to-end distance along the flow direction and strongly depends
on concentration. In addition, the normalized tumbling frequency as well as the
widths of the alignment distribution functions for a given
concentration-dependent Weissenberg number exhibit a weak concentration
dependence in the cross-over regime from a dilute to a semidilute solution. For
semidilute solutions a universal behavior is obtained. This is a consequence of
screening of hydrodynamic interactions at polymer concentrations exceeding the
overlap concentration
Anomalous Josephson Current in Junctions with Spin-Polarizing Quantum Point Contacts
We consider a ballistic Josephson junction with a quantum point contact in a
two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The point contact
acts as a spin filter when embedded in a circuit with normal electrodes. We
show that with an in-plane external magnetic field an anomalous supercurrent
appears even for zero phase difference between the superconducting electrodes.
In addition, the external field induces large critical current asymmetries
between the two flow directions, leading to supercurrent rectifying effects.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in PR
Radiation environment along the INTEGRAL orbit measured with the IREM monitor
The INTEGRAL Radiation Environment Monitor (IREM) is a payload supporting
instrument on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The monitor continually measures
electron and proton fluxes along the orbit and provides this information to the
spacecraft on board data handler. The mission alert system broadcasts it to the
payload instruments enabling them to react accordingly to the current radiation
level. Additionally, the IREM conducts its autonomous research mapping the
Earth radiation environment for the space weather program. Its scientific data
are available for further analysis almost without delay.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A+A letter
A single intrinsic Josephson junction with double-sided fabrication technique
We make stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) imbedded in the bulk
of very thin (~nm) single crystals.
By precisely controlling the etching depth during the double-sided fabrication
process, the stacks can be reproducibly tailor-made to be of any microscopic
height (), i.e. enclosing a specified number of IJJ (0-6),
including the important case of a single junction. We discuss reproducible
gap-like features in the current-voltage characteristics of the samples at high
bias.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, to be published in APL May. 2
Mesoscale simulations of polymer dynamics in microchannel flows
The non-equilibrium structural and dynamical properties of flexible polymers
confined in a square microchannel and exposed to a Poiseuille flow are
investigated by mesoscale simulations. The chain length and the flow strength
are systematically varied. Two transport regimes are identified, corresponding
to weak and strong confinement. For strong confinement, the transport
properties are independent of polymer length. The analysis of the long-time
tumbling dynamics of short polymers yields non-periodic motion with a sublinear
dependence on the flow strength. We find distinct differences for
conformational as well as dynamical properties from results obtained for simple
shear flow
