Bandstructure and Fermi Surfaces of CeRh3B2

The electronic bandstructure and the Fermi surfaces of ferromagnetic CeRh3B2 are calculated by using FLAPW and LSDA+U method. As assuming several kinds of the ground state to describe the 4f electronic state, we propose a fully orbital- and spin-polarized state |lz=0, sx=1/2> as the ground state, instead of the conventional LS-coupled CEF ground state, generally expected in typical 4f compounds. This is supported by the fact that both the observed magnetic moment and the observed dHvA frequencies are well explained by the calculated electronic structure and the Fermi surfaces. The unconventional ground state is stabilized by the strong 4f-4f direct mixing between the neighbored Ce atoms along the extremely small distance along the c-axis in the hexagonal crystal cell.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, submitted to JPSJ (accepted and will appear in the issue of Vol.79, No.4

Drivers of Change or Cut-Throat Competitors? Challenging Cultures of Innovation of Chinese and Nigerian Migrant Entrepreneurs in West Africa

    The Study of Irregular Migration

    Get PDF
AbstractThe study of irregular migration as a specific social phenomenon took off during the 70s in the US. Since then, the academic interest has continually grown and spread, first to Europe and, in the last years, to other regions worldwide. This interest can certainly be related to the increasing attention paid to the study of migrations more in general (Castles & Miller, 1993). The trend can be linked to those broad and complex social and economic changes, often subsumed under the concept of globalization. The specific focus on irregular migration, though gaining momentum throughout the 1980s, reached preeminent attention in the 1990s. On both sides of the Atlantic, the explosion of the so-called "migration crisis" (Zolberg & Benda, 2001) and the emergence of irregular migration as a widespread social fact raised the attention of public opinion and academics alike. Moreover, in recent years, what seemed at first to be an issue concerning only the high-income regions of the planet, now involves also medium and low-income ones, making irregular migration a truly global structural phenomenon (Cvajner & Sciortino, 2010a; Düvell, 2006)

The sex-dependent role of the glucocorticoid receptor in depression: variations in the NR3C1 gene are associated with major depressive disorder in women but not in men

Genetic variations in the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) have been associated with maladaptive stress responses and major depressive disorder (MDD). In a case-control study design, we examined whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haploid genotype (haplotype) associations of MR gene NR3C2, GR gene NR3C1 and genes of GR chaperone molecules FK506 binding protein 5 (FKBP5) and corticotrophin-releasing hormone receptor 1 (CRHR1) differed between healthy subjects (n = 634) and inpatients with major depressive disorder (n = 412). All analyses were conducted for women and men separately. After conservative correction of Type-I-error to obtain reliable p values, one SNP in the NR3C1 gene, namely rs6195, showed a significant association with the presence of a major depression (p = 0.048) in females. In contrast, NR3C2, FKBP5 and CRHR1 polymorphisms were not significantly associated with MDD. No haplotype effects could be identified. Our results support the notion of an association between variants of GR-related genes in women and the pathophysiology of depression: females suffering from MDD showed a more than three times higher frequency of the T/C polymorphism compared to controls, which thus seems to increase the vulnerability to depression in females

Pulsed field magnetometer for industrial use

    No full text
An industrial pulsed field magnetometer was developed, focusing on industrial needs. The system is to be used for the complete characterizing of permanent magnets in a production-line situation. The purpose is to create a fast, reliable, and accurate magnetometer for quality control but also, in a later step, as a standard measurement method for magnets

A pulsed field magnetometer for the qualitiy control of permanent magnets

A pulsed field magnetometer (PFM) for industrial applications was developed. The system has a capacitor bank of 5mF for energy storage, which can be charged up to 3000V. The pulse magnet has a bore of 30mm (including the pickup coil), which is subdivided into two coils and produces a maximum field of 5T with pulse frequencies of 17.5 and 25Hz. The magnetisation is measured with a well balanced and temperature stabilised coaxial pickup system. The signal is integrated with a stable analogue integrator with selectable time constants. The signals are connected to a 14bit 5M sample/s two-channel ADC in a computer. For the data handling a C ++ -based computer program was written. The effects of eddy currents on the metallic samples are corrected by using the so-called f/2f method. Here two hysteresis measurements with two different time constants are used to measure the eddy current error. The function and reliability of the system is demonstrated by measuring the hysteresis of standard permanent magnets in the PFM and in a static system
