I Don\u27t Know: An Artistic Inquiry Self-Study of Clinical Decision Making in Dance/Movement Therapy

The purpose of this artistic inquiry self-study was to engage in an embodied, in-depth process of exploration regarding how I engage in clinical decision-making. My research question was: “how do I, as an emerging dance/movement therapist, approach the clinical decision-making process?” Data was recorded through written journaling and video recorded improvisational movement. Journaling and movement were elicited through the visualization of a moment in a dance/movement therapy session in which I was caught off guard and needed to make a clinical decision. Such moments provoked anxiety and a freeze response that interfered with effective clinical intervention. Data was analyzed through dialogue with a research consultant, and through creative synthesis, resulting in a choreographic piece. Findings indicate that my freeze response to clinical decision making was a two-cycle process. Findings indicated that this freeze response happened when a supervisor was observing, or a client brought up intense material and my inner-critic interfered with intervention. The cycles were identified as follows: Cycle A: 1. Exploration, 2. Fear and self-doubt, 3. Perceived or imagined disapproval, 4. Shedding, 5. Resentment, 6. Distancing and grounding and Cycle B: 1. Autopilot, 2. Anger and rebellion, 3. Shedding/dissociation/loss of identity/perceived approval. The use of autonomy and inner-wisdom, hope, and self-regulation were themes generated that interfered with the cycle and generated more positive feeling states. Future research on exploring autonomy, hope, and self-regulation in relation to clinical decision making and intervention may help to manage clinician anxiety. It is my hope that these insights will positively influence my effectiveness as a clinician and allow my future clients to experience safety and trust in having a self-regulated and decisive clinician. 65 pages

In this study, we aimed to compare how love, marital quality and adjustment are expressed in the different stages of the vital evolutionary cycle, in 372 people, of both sexes, residing in the Rio Grande do Sul. As instruments, we use GRIMS, DAS and ETAS. We verified in families with young children (age from 0 to 11) the worst results in the investigated constructs and in the families with teenager children (age from 12 to 21) the best results. The data corroborate the literature, which discusses that the relationship time generates variations in the perception of marital satisfaction, as well as the finding that the demands of the children, especially small ones, impact the marital construction. These findings point to the need for systemic approach preventive work, in order to make families more adept at dealing with their developmental crises

“I shall read that you are my husband and you shall see me sign myself your wife”: Analyzing the Rhetorical Strategies of Heloise d’Argenteuil

This project strives to decouple the 12th century writer Heloise d’Argenteuil from her husband, the notorious Peter Abelard, establishing her as a significant thinker and writer, particularly in the tradition of women’s literature. Heloise, in fact, anticipated the querelle des femme of a later medieval scholar, Christine de Pizan, as she sought to combat stereotypical thinking about women within the circumscribed role of a devoted lover and wife to Abelard. Drawing on the work of Sally Livingston and others, I will examine various medieval discourses. In her letters, Heloise is revealed as a figure aspiring to be viewed not as a wife succumbing to a man, but rather as a woman devoting her mind, body, and future to her husband. Thus, this paper will examine her rhetorical strategies that engender a conversation between husband and wife and enable her to consciously retain an unbreakable connection with Abelard

Automatic Interpretation of Melanocytic Images in Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy

The frequency of melanoma doubles every 20 years. The early detection of malignant changes augments the therapy success. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) enables the noninvasive examination of skin tissue. To diminish the need for training and to improve diagnostic accuracy, computer-aided diagnostic systems are required. Two approaches are presented: a multiresolution analysis and an approach based on deep layer convolutional neural networks. For the diagnosis of the CLSM views, architectural structures such as micro-anatomic structures and cell nests are used as guidelines by the dermatologists. Features based on the wavelet transform enable an exploration of architectural structures at different spatial scales. The subjective diagnostic criteria are objectively reproduced. A tree-based machine-learning algorithm captures the decision structure explicitly and the decision steps are used as diagnostic rules. Deep layer neural networks require no a priori domain knowledge. They are capable of learning their own discriminatory features through the direct analysis of image data. However, deep layer neural networks require large amounts of processing power to learn. Therefore, modern neural network training is performed using graphics cards, which typically possess many hundreds of small, modestly powerful cores that calculate massively in parallel. Readers will learn how to apply multiresolution analysis and modern deep learning neural network techniques to medical image analysis problems

The effect of ratio and interval training on Pavlovian-instrumental transfer in mice.

Conditional stimuli (CS) that are paired with reward can be used to motivate instrumental responses. This process is called Pavlovian-instrumental transfer (PIT). A recent study in rats suggested that habitual responses are particularly sensitive to the motivational effects of reward cues. The current experiments examined this idea using ratio and interval training in mice. Two groups of animals were trained to lever press for food pellets that were delivered on random ratio or random interval schedules. Devaluation tests revealed that interval training led to habitual responding while ratio training produced goal-directed actions. The presentation of CSs paired with reward led to positive transfer in both groups, however, the size of this effect was much larger in mice that were trained on interval schedules. This result suggests that habitual responses are more sensitive to the motivational influence of reward cues than goal-directed actions. The implications for neurobiological models of motivation and drug seeking behaviors are discussed
