Gaseous Monitoring for the Integrated Life Support System at Langley Research Center

    Get PDF
The Integrated Life Support System was conceived to study the problems of integrating regenerative equipment designed to operate in a negligible gravitational field. It is the first to fully integrate the three major contributors to atmospheric contamination: man, machine, and materials

Progress towards terahertz acoustic phonon generation in doping superlattices

    Get PDF
Progress is described in experiments to generate coherent terahertz acoustic phonons in silicon doping superlattices by the resonant absorption of nanosecond-pulsed far-infrared laser radiation. Future experiments are proposed that would use the superlattice as a transducer in a terahertz cryogenic acoustic reflection microscope with sub-nanometer resolution

Modeling the high-speed switching of far-infrared radiation by photoionization in a semiconductor

Data from an earlier study [T. Vogel et al., Appl. Opt. 31, 329 (1992)] on the subnanosecond switching of 119-μm radiation in high-resistivity silicon by pulsed UV laser radiation, is compared with a refined one-dimensional numerical multilayer model accounting for the generation, recombination, and diffusion of the free carriers on the resulting far-infrared optical properties of the silicon. The inclusion of recent measurements for carrier-density and temperature-dependent transport parameters leads to improved agreement between experiment and theory

PARENT AND CHILD - DUTY OF MOTHER TO SUPPORT CHILD WHEN FATHER IS ALIVE

    Get PDF
Plaintiff obtained a divorce from defendant, and at the time of the divorce voluntarily undertook to care for and support their twenty-one year old son, who was afflicted with tuberculosis and unable to support himself. The son resided with his mother until his death. She instituted this action against the father to recover for the care and support of the son from the time of the divorce until his death and for funeral expenses, relying upon a statute imposing upon specified classes or relatives of poor persons a duty to maintain them, which statute the plaintiff contended imposed a duty upon the father to support their adult son while he was unable to support himself. Held, that the liability imposed by the statute was joint and several and that the plaintiff, in the absence of an express agreement, could not recover. Tesch v. Tesch, 65 S. D. 637, 277 N. The fabrication and characterization of granular aluminium/palladium bilayer microbolometers

    Get PDF
Superconducting granular aluminium/palladium bilayer microbolometers with subnanosecond response can be easily fabricated using an all lift-off process with image-reversal lithography. The palladium capping layer allows for convenient and reproducible Ohmic contacts to be made to the device. We report their fabrication, resistance–current calibration, responsivity and response time. Finally, a deconvolution algorithm is used to improve the time resolution to approximately 1 ns while obtaining the incident photon and phonon fluxes in both direct photoexcitation and phonon heat pulse experiments

Evidence for Terahertz Acoustic Phonon Parametric Oscillator Based on Acousto-Optic Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing in a Silicon Doping Superlattice

    Get PDF
We report evidence for a 1.0-THz self-starting mirrorless acoustic phonon parametric oscillator (MAPPO) produced from acousto-optic phase-conjugate degenerate four-wave (D4WM) mixing in a THz laser-pumped silicon doping superlattice (DSL). The DSL was grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a (100) boron-doped silicon substrate. A superconducting NbTiN subwavelength grating was used to couple the THz laser radiation into the DSL. Superconducting granular aluminum bolometric detection, coupled with Si:B piezophonon spectroscopy, revealed excitation of THz coherent compressional and shear waves, along the ⟨111⟩ direction only. The Bragg scattering condition for distributed feedback, and the energy conservation requirement for the D4WM process, were both verified. A THz MAPPO could provide a test bed for studies of nonclassical acoustic phonon fields

INSURANCE - WHEN IS A PERSON ENGAGING IN THE INSURANCE BUSINESS

    Get PDF
Defendant was secretary of a retail grocers association which maintained a so-called Plate Glass Fund, for members only, administered by the defendant without compensation. The members paid into the fund a certain sum annually, depending on the amount of glass they wanted protected, and in the event of breakage it was replaced. Surplus funds were returned to the members. The certificates of membership expressly stipulated that the fund was not an insurance or indemnity company. Defendant was prosecuted and convicted for conducting an unauthorized insurance business. Held, the defendant was engaging in the insurance business, and conviction was sustained. People v. Roschli, 275 N. Y. 26, 9 N. E. (2d) 763 (1937)

INSURANCE - SUPERVISION BY THE STATE - WHAT CONSTITUTES THE INSURANCE BUSINESS

Plaintiff, a corporation, advertised that any person who bought goods from certain selected stores would be entitled to receive coupons, and when his coupons amounted to a certain sum he would be entitled to certain death and security benefits up to specified amounts. Plaintiff brought suit against the Insurance Commissioner of Pennsylvania to enjoin him from interfering with the plaintiff\u27s business. Held, that the plaintiff was carrying on an insurance business and was subject to supervision by the Insurance Commissioner. Hunt v. Public Mutual Benefit Foundation, (C. C. A. 3d, 1938) 94 F. (2d) 749, certiorari denied (U. S. 1938) 59 S. Ct. 75
