    Can homogeneous nucleation resolve the inner core nucleation paradox?

    The formation of Earth's solid inner core is thought to mark a profound change in the evolution of the deep Earth and the power that is available to generate the geomagnetic field. Previous studies generally find that the inner core nucleated around 0.5–1 billion years ago, but neglect the fact that homogeneous liquids must be cooled far below their melting point in order for solids to form spontaneously. The classical theory of nucleation predicts that the core must be undercooled by several hundred K, which is incompatible with estimates of the core's present-day temperature. This “inner core nucleation paradox” therefore asserts that the present inner core should not have formed, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of deep Earth evolution. In this paper we explore the nucleation process in as yet untested iron-rich systems which may comprise the Earth's early core. We find that 1 mol.% Si and S increase the supercooling required to freeze the inner core compared to pure iron by 400 K and 1000 K respectively. 10 mol.% O reduces the required inner core nucleation supercooling to 730 K and 3 mol.% C to only 612 K, which is close to resolving the paradox but still requires that the inner core formed recently

    Examining the power supplied to Earth's dynamo by magnesium precipitation and radiogenic heat production

    We examine magnesium and potassium solubility in liquid Fe mixtures, representative of Earth's core composition, in equilibrium with liquid silicate mixtures representative of an early magma ocean. Our study is based on the calculation of the chemical potentials of MgO and K2O in both phases, using density functional theory. For MgO, we also study stability against precipitation of the solid phase. We use thermal evolution models of the core and mantle to assess whether either radiogenic heating from 40K decay or Mg precipitation from the liquid core can resolve the new core paradox by powering the geodynamo prior to inner core formation. Our results for K show that concentrations in the core are likely to be small and the effect of 40K decay on the thermal evolution of the core is minimal, making it incapable of sustaining the early geodynamo alone. Our results also predict small concentrations of Mg in the core which might be sufficient to power the geodynamo prior to inner core formation, depending on the process by which it is transported across the core mantle boundary

    This is the final report of an evaluation into the identification/brief advice (IBA) service about alcohol in community pharmacy settings in the North West of England. Since 2007, almost 100 pharmacies in the North West have - at some point - been commissioned to provide an identification and brief advice (IBA) service for alcohol. This evaluation sought to understand how the service had been adapted for and implemented in the community pharmacy setting, and how its potential might be maximised. Its aims were: 1. To characterise, consolidate and optimise both the constant and variable elements of the pharmacy alcohol identification/brief advice (IBA) service in NHS Northwest, and 2. To inform planning for current and future pharmacy based services promoting safe consumption of alcohol. The evaluation was split into three main workstreams, supported by a preliminary scoping phase, and combined quantitative and qualitative methods: • Descriptive and comparative statistical analysis of pharmacy alcohol IBA data; • In-pharmacy work, including observation of staff engagement with customers, recording consultations between staff and customers, follow-up telephone interviews with customers, and group feedback interviews with pharmacy staff; • Stakeholder engagement through self-completion surveys, semi-structured interviews and a workshop. This report gives the background to the project, and details the methods, results and implications

    Island tameness and the repeatability of flight initiation distance in a large herbivore

The final version is available from NRC Research Press via the DOI in this record.Antipredator behaviours can be lost relatively quickly in populations that are relieved of predation, as is known for several species inhabiting islands. Flight initiation distance (FID) is often studied in the context of island tameness; however, little is known about the factors that influence and maintain FID variation in predation-free populations. Here, we studied FID in foals of an isolated predator-free population of feral horses (Equus caballus L., 1758) on Sable Island, Canada, to determine if FID could be used for research on consistent individual differences in risk aversion and island tameness. In addition to testing for temporal, spatial, and sex effects on FID, we compared repeatability estimates at two temporal scales (within and among days). Similar FID for measurements obtained on the same day and for males and females indicated an absence of short-term desensitization and sex effects. In contrast, FID decreased for measurements made on subsequent days and from east to west, which could reflect habituation to human presence and (or) other temporal and spatial processes. Repeatability was high (0.42 Âą 0.06), but tended to decrease with increasing time intervals.     Structural optimization of reversible dibromomaleimide peptide stapling

    Methods to constrain peptides in a bioactive α‐helical conformation for inhibition of protein‐protein interactions represent an ongoing area of investigation in chemical biology. Recently, the first example of a reversible “stapling” methodology was described which exploits native cysteine or homocysteine residues spaced at the i and i + 4 positions in a peptide sequence together with the thiol selective reactivity of dibromomaleimides (a previous study). This manuscript reports on the optimization of the maleimide based constraint, focusing on the kinetics of macrocyclization and the extent to which helicity is promoted with different thiol containing amino acids. The study identified an optimal stapling combination of X1 = L‐Cys and X5 = L‐hCys in the context of the model peptide Ac‐X1AAAX5‐NH2, which should prove useful in implementing the dibromomaleimide stapling strategy in peptidomimetic ligand discovery programmes

    New Fathers' Perinatal Depression and Anxiety-Treatment Options: An Integrative Review.

    More than 10% of fathers experience depression and anxiety during the perinatal period, but paternal perinatal depression (PPND) and anxiety have received less attention than maternal perinatal mental health problems. Few mainstream treatment options are available for men with PPND and anxiety. The aim of this literature review was to summarize the current understanding of PPND and the treatment programs specifically designed for fathers with perinatal depression. Eight electronic databases were searched using a predefined strategy, and reference lists were also hand searched. PPND and anxiety were identified to have a negative impact on family relationships, as well as the health of mothers and children. Evidence suggests a lack of support and tailored treatment options for men having trouble adjusting to the transition to fatherhood. Of the limited options available, cognitive behavioral therapy, group work, and blended delivery programs, including e-support approaches appear to be most effective in helping fathers with perinatal depression and anxiety. The review findings have important implications for the understanding of PPND and anxiety. Future research is needed to address the adoption of father-inclusive and father-specific models of care to encourage fathers' help-seeking behavior. Inclusion of male-specific requirements into support and treatment options can improve the ability of services to engage new fathers. Psychotherapeutic intervention could assist to address the cognitive differences and dissonance for men adjusting to the role of father, including male identity and role expectations

    Integrating personality research and animal contest theory: aggressiveness in the green swordtail <i>Xiphophorus helleri</i>

    &lt;p&gt;Aggression occurs when individuals compete over limiting resources. While theoretical studies have long placed a strong emphasis on context-specificity of aggression, there is increasing recognition that consistent behavioural differences exist among individuals, and that aggressiveness may be an important component of individual personality. Though empirical studies tend to focus on one aspect or the other, we suggest there is merit in modelling both within-and among-individual variation in agonistic behaviour simultaneously. Here, we demonstrate how this can be achieved using multivariate linear mixed effect models. Using data from repeated mirror trials and dyadic interactions of male green swordtails, &lt;i&gt;Xiphophorus helleri&lt;/i&gt;, we show repeatable components of (co)variation in a suite of agonistic behaviour that is broadly consistent with a major axis of variation in aggressiveness. We also show that observed focal behaviour is dependent on opponent effects, which can themselves be repeatable but were more generally found to be context specific. In particular, our models show that within-individual variation in agonistic behaviour is explained, at least in part, by the relative size of a live opponent as predicted by contest theory. Finally, we suggest several additional applications of the multivariate models demonstrated here. These include testing the recently queried functional equivalence of alternative experimental approaches, (e. g., mirror trials, dyadic interaction tests) for assaying individual aggressiveness.&lt;/p&gt

    Probing the nucleation of iron in Earth’s core using MD simulations of supercooled liquids

    Classical nucleation theory describes the formation of the first solids from supercooled liquids and predicts an average waiting time for a system to freeze as it is cooled below the melting temperature. For systems at low to moderate undercooling, waiting times are too long for freezing to be observed via simulation. Here a system can be described by estimated thermodynamic properties, or by extrapolation from practical conditions where thermodynamic properties can be fit directly to simulations. In the case of crystallising Earth’s solid iron inner core, these thermodynamic parameters are not well known and waiting times from simulations must be extrapolated over ∼60 orders of magnitude. In this work, we develop a new approach negating the need for freezing to be observed. We collect statistics on solid-like particles in molecular dynamic simulations of supercooled liquids at 320 GPa. This allows estimation of waiting times at temperatures closer to the melting point than is accessible to other techniques and without prior thermodynamic insight or assumption. Our method describes the behaviour of nucleation at otherwise inaccessible conditions such that the nucleation of any system at small undercooling can be characterised alongside the thermodynamic quantities which define the first formed solids

    Spin Calogero Particles and Bispectral Solutions of the Matrix KP Hierarchy

    Pairs of n×nn\times n matrices whose commutator differ from the identity by a matrix of rank rr are used to construct bispectral differential operators with r×rr\times r matrix coefficients satisfying the Lax equations of the Matrix KP hierarchy. Moreover, the bispectral involution on these operators has dynamical significance for the spin Calogero particles system whose phase space such pairs represent. In the case r=1r=1, this reproduces well-known results of Wilson and others from the 1990's relating (spinless) Calogero-Moser systems to the bispectrality of (scalar) differential operators. This new class of pairs (L,Λ)(L, \Lambda) of bispectral matrix differential operators is different than those previously studied in that LL acts from the left, but Λ\Lambda from the right on a common r×rr\times r eigenmatrix.Comment: 16 page
