    Cooking Hand Multi-Tool

    The purpose of this project was to devise a solution for Jorge Segura, a US Marine who was wounded in Afghanistan and had to have his non-dominant arm amputated above the elbow. His current prosthetic attachments are not suited to cooking tasks, so he needed a way to cook more effectively with either prosthetic attachments or accessibility devices. The main tasks that he needed help with was holding down food on cutting boards and stabilizing pots, pans, and bowls especially when stirring. After background research, exploring commercially available devices, and talking with our challenger, our solution was to design three prosthetic attachments with a quick-change wrist to enable Jorge to stabilize pots, pans, and bowls, as well as hold food down on a cutting board and switch between the attachments efficiently. The quick-change wrist operates in a twist-and-lock fashion, with the wrist inserts mating into the wrist receiver and locking into place with magnets on each component. The wrist receiver easily mates with Jorge’s current wrist so that he can efficiently and easily install our quick-change wrist into his existing wrist. The wrist is predominantly made from delrin to reduce weight and improve component machinability. The prototyping process for the wrist cost 144.58todevelopourfunctionalprototypes,whiletheestimatedmassproductioncostisonly144.58 to develop our functional prototypes, while the estimated mass production cost is only 13.99 per wrist assembly. The clamp attachment interfaces with Jorge’s current body powered prosthetic arm through a connector plate mounted on the attachment body. Jorge is able to engage the cable to open the clamp so that it can fit over various sizes of pots and bowls, and release the tension in the cable to allow it to close over the pot or bowl. The clamp is also fully adjustable, with a trifold face designed with springs to conform to different diameters, and an angled guide that is adjustable with thumb screws to allow Jorge to angle the trifold to fit on curved bowls. It also includes a set of angled and straight inner prongs that can be removed for easier cleaning. The clamp is predominantly made from aluminum to reduce weight, and has an estimated cost of 209.55todevelopourfunctionalprototypes,whiletheestimatedmassproductioncostisonly209.55 to develop our functional prototypes, while the estimated mass production cost is only 43.25 per clamp assembly. The sleeve attachment allows Jorge to stabilize shallow pans with long handles. The design includes a simple diamond-shaped opening to fit over a variety of pan sizes, and has no moving parts for simplicity. Made from a 3D printed core and sheet metal inserts and connections, the sleeve is relatively lightweight and easy to manufacture. Design development to make our sleeve prototypes cost 124.91,whiletheestimatedmassproductioncostofonesleeveisonly124.91, while the estimated mass production cost of one sleeve is only 8.05. The cutting tool attachment enables Jorge to secure various sizes of food onto a cutting board. It is made of clear acrylic to allow Jorge to receive visual feedback from what he is cutting. The design of the cutting tool attachment includes several ridges to allow for better grip, and a narrow slit on the base to allow for perpendicular knife cuts. The cutting tool has an estimated development cost of 70.86fortheprototypes,withanestimatedmassproductioncostof70.86 for the prototypes, with an estimated mass production cost of 4.72 per assembly. For future manufacturing of the wrist, we recommend that the wrist inserts be made from aluminum instead of delrin to improve the strength of the epoxied and press-fit joints. This would increase the weight of the device and decrease the cost slightly. We recommend that future iterations of the clamp include a more robust prong design, and a more secure connection for the angle guides. To manufacture more copies of the sleeve, we recommend adding a key to both sides of the connecting rod to fully restrain the rotation of the connecting rod. This would increase the weight and cost of the sleeve marginally. Finally, for future iterations of the cutting tool we recommend looking into a solid construction cast from food-safe resin in order to improve cutting tool durability with respect to impact loads

    Magnetic resonance imaging of knee hyaline cartilage and intraarticular pathology

    Injuries to the hyaline cartilage of the knee joint are difficult to diagnose without invasive techniques. Even though these defects may be the most important prog nostic factors in assessing knee joint injury, they are usually not diagnosed until arthrotomy or arthroscopy. Once injuries to hyaline cartilage are found and/or treated, no technique exists to follow these over time. Plain radiographs, arthrograms, and even computed tomography fail to detail most hyaline cartilage defects. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to eval uate five fresh frozen cadaver limbs and 10 patients whose pathology was known from arthrotomy or ar throscopic examination. Using a 0.35 Tesla supercon ducting magnet and spin-echo imaging technique with a head coil, we found that intraarticular fluid or air helped to delineate hyaline cartilage pathology. The multiplane capability of MRI proved to be excellent in detailing small (3 mm or more) defects on the femoral condyles and patellar surface. Cruciate ligaments were best visualized on sagittal oblique projections while meniscal pathology was best seen on true sagittal and coronal projections. MRI shows great promise in providing a noninvasive technique of evaluating hyaline cartilage defects, their response to treatment, and detailed anatomical infor mation about cruciate ligaments and menisci.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67078/2/10.1177_036354658701500505.pd

    Implications of Polarized Pupil Degradation Due to Focal Shifts in Dynamically Ranged Rayleigh Beacons

    A dynamically ranged pulsed Rayleigh beacon using sensed wavefronts across a system’s pupil plane is proposed for tomographic quantification of the atmospheric turbulence strength. This method relies on relaying light from a telescope system’s pupil plane to a wavefront sensor and having precise control of the light-blocking mechanisms to filter out scattered light from the unwanted scattering regions along the propagation path. To accomplish this, we tested and incorporated design features into the sensing system that we believe, to the best of our knowledge, are unique. Dynamically changing the range of the beacon source created focal shifts along the optical axis in the telescope sensing system. This effect induced polarization degradation in the optical pupil. As a result, polarization nonuniformity within the Pockels cell resulted in light leakages that corrupted the sensed data signals. To mitigate this unwanted effect, an analysis of the polarization pupil had to be completed for the range of possible Rayleigh beacon source distances, relating the change in polarization to the ability of a Pockels cell to function as an optical shutter. Based on the resultant polarization pupil analysis, careful design of the light relay architecture of the sensing system was necessary to properly capture sensed wavefront data from a series of intended ranges. Results are presented for the engineering design of the Turbulence and Aerosol Research Dynamic Interrogation System sensing system showing the choices made within the trade space and how those choices were made based on an analysis of the polarization pupil. Based on what we learned, recommendations are made to effectively implement a polarization-based Pockels cell shutter system as part of a dynamically ranged Rayleigh beacon system

    Privacy-Preserving Gaze Data Streaming in Immersive Interactive Virtual Reality:Robustness and User Experience

    Eye tracking is routinely being incorporated into virtual reality (VR) systems. Prior research has shown that eye tracking data, if exposed, can be used for re-identification attacks [14]. The state of our knowledge about currently existing privacy mechanisms is limited to privacy-utility trade-off curves based on data-centric metrics of utility, such as prediction error, and black-box threat models. We propose that for interactive VR applications, it is essential to consider user-centric notions of utility and a variety of threat models. We develop a methodology to evaluate real-time privacy mechanisms for interactive VR applications that incorporate subjective user experience and task performance metrics. We evaluate selected privacy mechanisms using this methodology and find that re-identification accuracy can be decreased to as low as 14% while maintaining a high usability score and reasonable task performance. Finally, we elucidate three threat scenarios (black-box, black-box with exemplars, and white-box) and assess how well the different privacy mechanisms hold up to these adversarial scenarios. This work advances the state of the art in VR privacy by providing a methodology for end-to-end assessment of the risk of re-identification attacks and potential mitigating solutions

    The role of 39 psoriasis risk variants on age of psoriasis onset.

    Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified multiple genetic risk factors for psoriasis, but data on their association with age of onset have been marginally explored. The goal of this study was to evaluate known risk alleles of psoriasis for association with age of psoriasis onset in three well-defined case-only cohorts totaling 1,498 psoriasis patients. We selected 39 genetic variants from psoriasis GWAS and tested these variants for association with age of psoriasis onset in a meta-analysis. We found that rs10484554 and rs12191877 near HLA-C and rs17716942 near IFIH1 were associated with age of psoriasis onset with false discovery rate < 0.05. The association between rs17716942 and age of onset was not replicated in a fourth independent cohort of 489 patients (P = 0.94). The imputed HLA-C∗06:02 allele demonstrated a much stronger association with age of psoriasis onset than rs10484554 and rs12191877. We conclude that despite the discovery of numerous psoriasis risk alleles, HLA-C∗06:02 still plays the most important role in determining the age of onset of psoriasis. Larger studies are needed to evaluate the contribution of other risk alleles, including IFIH1, to age of psoriasis onset
