The effect of hyperthermia on the radiation response of crypt cells in mouse jejunum
The effect of hyperthermia and/or gamma-radiation on the survival of intestinal crypt cells was studied in BDF sub 1 mice using a microcolony assay. Hyperthermia treatments, which in themselves caused no detectable cell lethality, inhibited the capacity of crypt cells to repair sublethal radiation damage. In addition, heat applied either before or after single radiation exposures potentiated lethal damage to crypt cells; the degree of enhancement was dependent on the time interval between treatments. At the levels of heating employed, DNA synthesis in the intestinal epithelium was significantly reduced immediately following exposure, but returned rapidly to normal levels. No further disturbances in cellular kinetics were observed for up to 10 days after heating
Fabrication process of a high temperature polymer matrix engine duct
The process that was used in the molding of an advanced composite outer by-pass duct planned for the F404 engine is discussed. This duct was developed as a potential replacement for the existing titanium duct in order to reduce both the weight and cost of the duct. The composite duct is now going into the manufacturing technology portion of the program. The duct is fabricated using graphite cloth impregnated with the PMR-15 matrix system
Features controlling the early stages of creep deformation of Waspaloy
A model has been presented for describing primary and second stage creep. General equations were derived for the amount and time of primary creep. It was shown how the model can be used to extrapolate creep data. Applicability of the model was demonstrated for Waspaloy with gamma prime particle sizes from 75 - 1000 A creep tested in the temperature range 1000 - 1400 F (538 - 760 C). Studies of high latitude current systems using MAGSAT vector data
The magnetic disturbance fields caused by global external current systems are considered with particular emphasis on improving the understanding of the physical processes which control high latitude current systems. Following processing the MAGSAT data were routinely plotted in the Universal Time (UT) format as well as in a polar plot format. The H'D'U' coordinate system, was adopted as the standard for representing the MAGSAT residual magnetic field vectors. A data file was generated and the TPOLAR computer code was developed to determine from the orbital elements, the time, latitude, and MLT of the extremum latitude of each transpolar segment of orbit. The precision of the vector data set from MAGSAT prompted an extended exploratory phase for data analysis procedures, modeling techniques and phenomenology
Cylindrical Algebraic Sub-Decompositions
Cylindrical algebraic decompositions (CADs) are a key tool in real algebraic
geometry, used primarily for eliminating quantifiers over the reals and
studying semi-algebraic sets. In this paper we introduce cylindrical algebraic
sub-decompositions (sub-CADs), which are subsets of CADs containing all the
information needed to specify a solution for a given problem.
We define two new types of sub-CAD: variety sub-CADs which are those cells in
a CAD lying on a designated variety; and layered sub-CADs which have only those
cells of dimension higher than a specified value. We present algorithms to
produce these and describe how the two approaches may be combined with each
other and the recent theory of truth-table invariant CAD.
We give a complexity analysis showing that these techniques can offer
substantial theoretical savings, which is supported by experimentation using an
implementation in Maple.Comment: 26 page
Vomiting Center reanalyzed: An electrical stimulation study
Electrical stimulation of the brainstem of 15 decerebrate cats produced stimulus-bound vomiting in only 4 animals. Vomiting was reproducible in only one cat. Effective stimulating sites were located in the solitary tract and reticular formation. Restricted localization of a vomiting center, stimulation of which evoked readily reproducible results, could not be obtained
Vestibular-induced vomiting after vestibulocerebellar lesions
Vestibular stimulation, by sinusoidal electrical polarization of the labyrinths of decerebrate cats which can produce vomiting and related activity which resembles motion sickness was examined. The symptoms include panting, salivation, swallowing, and retching as well as vomiting. These symptoms can be produced in cats with lesions of the posterior cerebellar vermis. It is suggested that a transcerebellar pathway from the vestibular apparatus through the nodulus and uvula to the vomiting center is not essential for vestibular induced vomiting and the occurrence of many symptoms of motion
