Talent Bank - An Innovative STEM Intervention to Develop the Next Generation of Life Science Talent in the South-West Region of Wales
The rationale for the qualitative study was initiated from recommendations of the Life Science Skills for Life (2014) regional study, identifying the need for a talent pool to support the region’s life science sector. A literature review identified further research needs of experiential learning design in integrated STEM interventions, particularly in further education contexts. The study explores stakeholder perspectives from employers, educators and student participants aged 16-19 years. The study was conducted over three action cycles between 2014 and 2018 iteratively identifying the talent requirements, intervention design and implementation. The intervention utilised an experiential education pedagogy in the course design with a set of features including masterclasses, industry challenges, mentoring, company visits, work experience and a set of skills strands as the main experiential learning opportunities. The aim of Talent Bank was to increase student interest and awareness of the life science sector and its STEM career opportunities in the south west region of Wales. Five collection instruments were used to collect the data and thematic analysis revealed the following findings: The Talent Bank model raised awareness and understanding of the life science sector and its career opportunities; stakeholders from the life science ecosystem willingly supported the delivery of the programme to ensure a dynamic, relevant and authentic learning experience; most participants indicated they would consider future employment in the life sciences or STEM related sectors having improved their reflexive practice habits, skills and individual profiles; the action research identified the perceptions of three stakeholder groups that could influence curricula development practice. The Talent Bank model represents an approach to developing a pipeline of the next generation of talent to serve the evolving needs of the life science sector. “A Friend in the Corner”: Supporting people at home in the last year of life via telephone and video consultation – an evaluation
YesObjective: To evaluate a 24/7, nurse led telephone and video-consultation support service for patients thought to be in the last year of life in Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven.
Method: Activity and other data recorded at the time of calls were analysed. Interviews with 13 participants captured patients and carers perspectives.
Results: Between April 1st 2014 and March 31st 2015, 4648 patients were registered on the Gold Line. 42% had a non-cancer diagnosis and 46% were not known to specialist palliative care services. The median time on the caseload was 49 days (range 1-504 days). 4533 telephone calls and 573 video consultations were received from 1813 individuals. 39% of the 5106 calls were resolved by Gold Line team without referral to other services. 69% of calls were made outside normal working hours. Interviews with patients and carers reported experiences of support and reassurance and the importance of practical advice.
Conclusion: A nurse led, 24/7 telephone and video consultation service can provide valuable support for patients identified to be in the last year of life and their cares. The line enabled them to feel supported and remain in their place of residence, reducing avoidable hospital admissions and use of other services. Providing this service may encourage health care professionals to identify patients approaching the last year of life, widening support offered to this group of patients beyond those known to specialist palliative care services.Health Foundation adn Shared Purpos
Size and Structure of the Narrow-Line Region of Quasars
We have observed the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of the seven brightest
radio-quiet PG (or BQS) quasars (z < 0.5) with the Wide Field and Planetary
Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Linear-ramp filters were
used to image the [OIII] lambda 5007 line emission with 0.0455-0.1 arcsec pixel
resolution. We find that the NLRs are very compact with typical extents of 2-4
arcsec. Two quasars show compact filamentary structures similar to Seyfert
NLRs. They may be related to radio outflows. Most interestingly, when including
a sample of Seyfert galaxies observed with HST, we tentatively find that the
size of the NLR is proportional to the square root of the [OIII] luminosity.
This is comparable to the scaling found for the size of the broad-line region
with continuum luminosity, which has been interpreted in terms of a constant
photoionization parameter. The relation determined here connects the NLR of
radio-quiet quasars and Seyferts over three orders of magnitude in [OIII]

Nxele, Ntsikana and the origins of the Xhosa religious reaction
The sudden expulsion of the Xhosa across the Fish River in 1811–12 created a practical and conceptual crisis which the traditional political authorities were unable to resolve. Two commoners, Nxele and Ntsikana, emerged in this vacuum, each proposing his own solution to the problems posed by the white irruption. Although these responses were religious responses, they were neither irrational nor incomprehensible. Xhosa religion had long functioned as an instrument for the control of the material world. By incorporating selected Christian concepts with the Xhosa world-view, Nxele and Ntsikana were able to provide the Xhosa with acceptable explanations of past events and prescriptions for future action. Nxele urged resistance and Ntsikana preached submission, but an examination of their personal histories shows that these final conclusions were more the product of exterior pressure than interior revelation. It may be suggested that the future reputations of the two men, like their past actions, will be determined more by the popular mood than by anything they themselves did or said
Killed but metabolically active Leishmania infantum as a novel whole-cell vaccine for visceral leishmaniasis
There are currently no effective vaccines for visceral leishmaniasis, the second most deadly parasitic infection in the world. Here, we describe a novel whole-cell vaccine approach using Leishmania infantum chagasi promastigotes treated with the psoralen compound amotosalen (S-59) and low doses of UV A radiation. This treatment generates permanent, covalent DNA cross-links within parasites and results in Leishmania organisms termed killed but metabolically active (KBMA). In this report, we characterize the in vitro growth characteristics of both KBMA L. major and KBMA L. infantum chagasi. Concentrations of S-59 that generate optimally attenuated parasites were identified. Like live L. infantum chagasi, KBMA L. infantum chagasi parasites were able to initially enter liver cells in vivo after intravenous infection. However, whereas live L. infantum chagasi infection leads to hepatosplenomegaly in mice after 6 months, KBMA L. infantum chagasi parasites were undetectable in the organs of mice at this time point. In vitro, KBMA L. infantum chagasi retained the ability to enter macrophages and induce nitric oxide production. These characteristics of KBMA L. infantum chagasi correlated with the ability to prophylactically protect mice via subcutaneous vaccination at levels similar to vaccination with live, virulent organisms. Splenocytes from mice vaccinated with either live L. infantum chagasi or KBMA L. infantum chagasi displayed similar cytokine patterns in vitro. These results suggest that KBMA technology is a potentially safe and effective novel vaccine strategy against the intracellular protozoan L. infantum chagasi. This approach may represent a new method for whole-cell vaccination against other complex intracellular pathogens
In the Living Room: Second Screens and TV Audiences

This article is based on a small pilot project exploring the role, function, and meanings of second screens and companion apps for TV audiences that is contextualized by existing academic audience research. This is mapped alongside industry research and academic debate about second screens. The results illustrate some disjunction between industry expectations of usage and viewers' everyday experiences. I argue that industries' tendency to conflate "viewer" with "fan" indicates a less than nuanced understanding of the television/companion app audience. Further, the lean forward/lean back binary applied to digital media users and television audiences respectively points to a problematic not addressed in much industry literature, while the respondents for this research indicate a complex interplay between the pleasures of viewing that incorporates the social and the personal with the second screen and the TV text
