Online learning : towards enabling choice

Education is rapidly evolving from an opportunity that was provided mainly for an elite to one that is available to a mass markets and as such is prone to the forces generated by this environment. Where, in the established pattern, commercial interest was limited mainly to the use of skills developed during the educational process, the future model of educational provision will involve extensive commercial activity in the production, delivery and marketing of material. Already there are a number of commercial companies offering framework products enabling "off the shelf solutions" for the construction and delivery of web based courses in any subject area. The commercialisation of education is underway and it is inevitable that it will be viewed, by entrepreneurs and customers alike, as any other commercial product. It would seem reasonable that the consumer should be able to evaluate the performance of these new modes of working in a similar manner to other commercial products. This paper draws together current thinking on the problems associated with evaluating computer and communication based learning

Extreme CO Isotopic Abundances in the ULIRG IRAS 13120-5453: An Extremely Young Starburst or Top-Heavy Initial Mass Function

We present ALMA 12^{12}CO (J=1-0, 3-2 and 6-5), 13^{13}CO (J=1-0) and C18^{18}O (J=1-0) observations of the local Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxy, IRAS 13120-5453 (dubbed "The Yo-yo"). The morphologies of the three isotopic species differ, where 13^{13}CO shows a hole in emission towards the center. We measure integrated brightness temperature line ratios of 12^{12}CO/13^{13}CO ≥\geq 60 (exceeding 200) and 13^{13}CO/C18^{18}O ≤\leq 1 in the central region. Assuming optical thin emission, C18^{18}O is more abundant than 13^{13}CO in several regions. The abundances within the central 500 pc are consistent with enrichment of the ISM via a young starburst (<<7Myr), a top-heavy initial mass function or a combination of both.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Hello BLAW: Bloomberg Law, the Newcomer in Legal Research, Meets Academic Users

There’s a new legal information provider in town. Bloomberg, a widely-known provider of business and financial data and news, has been working the past several years to create and disseminate its Bloomberg Law (BLAW) suite of services to law firms as well as to a number of law school libraries

Elite male Flat jockeys display lower bone density and lower resting metabolic rate than their female counterparts: implications for athlete welfare

    Get PDF
To test the hypothesis that daily weight-making is more problematic to health in male compared with female jockeys, we compared the bone-density and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in weight-matched male and female Flat-jockeys. RMR (kcal.kg-1 lean mass) was lower in males compared with females as well as lower bone-density Z-scores at the hip and lumbar spine. Data suggest the lifestyle of male jockeys’ compromise health more severely than females, possibly due to making-weight more frequently

The genera Carpias Richardson, Ianiropsis Sars and Janaira Moreira & Pires (Isopoda: Asellota: Janiridae) from Australia, with description of three new species

    Get PDF
Three new species of janirid isopods are described: Carpias montaguensis sp. nov., Ianiropsis alanmillari sp. nov. and Janaira platyoura sp. nov.; all three were collected in shallow waters of southern New South Wales, Australia. Our report represents new records for these genera in Australian waters. Janaira platyoura sp. nov. is the second species added to this genus, so a revision of generic diagnosis was required. The diagnostic features of Carpias and Ianiropsis are also discussed and a new combination for the species Ianiropsis varians Winkler & Brandt, 1993 is proposed. Keys to the species of Carpias and Ianiropsis are presented.Fil: Doti, Brenda LĂa. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales. Making a difference - the appropriate use of web technology

    Get PDF
Much has been written elsewhere about how, different Information Technology tools, can in principle be used by groups or communities to make their web sites more effective for Continued Professional Development. In practice, complex use is not often the case. In particular, three sites were studied in Scotland, which provided web facilities for the over 60s. The sites, and the communities they served, used only simple Information Technology. Nevertheless, they enabled their communities to participate effectively, on the 'right side', of the European population's 'digital divide'
