    Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Soils

Although it is common to alternate between till and no-till practices, past research has considered farmers’ tillage options to be limited to the dichotomous choice of whether or not to switch to a long-term no-till regime. This paper expands farmers’ options and models their choices of tillage frequency. Less frequent tilling sequesters more carbon but permits a greater accumulation of weeds, whereas more frequent tilling eliminates weeds but releases carbon (tillage emissions). The timing of tillage balances its marginal benefits and costs. Higher payments from industry or government for atmospheric greenhouse gas reductions will increase marginal cost and reduce tillage frequency. Other key parameters, such as higher rates of tillage emissions or reduced weed impact, also influence tillage frequency. However, for the discount rate and the natural decay rate of carbon, the net change depends on the magnitude of other parameters.Land Economics/Use, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy, carbon contract, no-till, offsets, soil carbon sequestration, tillage frequency,

    A multiscale approach to environment

Physical processes influencing the properties of galaxies can be traced by the dependence and evolution of galaxy properties on their environment. A detailed understanding of this dependence can only be gained through comparison of observations with models, with an appropriate quantification of the rich parameter space describing the environment of the galaxy. We present a new, multiscale parameterization of galaxy environment which retains an observationally motivated simplicity whilst utilizing the information present on different scales. We examine how the distribution of galaxy (u-r) colours in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), parameterized using a double gaussian (red plus blue peak) fit, depends upon multiscale density. This allows us to probe the detailed dependence of galaxy properties on environment in a way which is independent of the halo model. Nonetheless, cross-correlation with the group catalogue constructed by Yang et al, 2007 shows that galaxy properties trace environment on different scales in a way which mimics that expected within the halo model. This provides independent support for the existence of virialized haloes, and important additional clues to the role played by environment in the evolution of the galaxy population. The discovery of a type II quasar at z= 1.65 with integral-field spectroscopy

In this Letter we report the serendipitous discovery of a genuine type II quasar at z= 1.65 using integral-field data from the Visual Multi-Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). This is the first discovery of a type II quasar at z > 1 from optical data alone. J094531-242831, hereafter J0945-2428, exhibits strong narrow (v < 1500 km s-1) emission lines, has a resolved host galaxy, and is undetected to a radio flux density limit of S5 GHz= 0.15 mJy (3σ) . All of these characteristics lead us to believe that J0945-2428 is a bona fide type II quasar. The luminosity of the narrow emission lines in this object suggest that the intrinsic power of the central engine is similar to that found in powerful radio galaxies, indicative of a similarly large supermassive black hole of ∼ 3 × 108 M⊙ (assuming that it is accreting at its Eddington limit). However, from near-infrared imaging observations we find that the old stellar population in the host galaxy has a luminosity of ∼ 0.2 L⋆, mildly inconsistent with the correlation between black hole mass and bulge luminosity found locally, although the uncertainty in the black hole mass estimate is large. This discovery highlights the power that integral-field units have in discovering hidden populations of objects, particularly the sought-after type II quasars, which are invoked to explain the hard X-ray background. As such, future large integral-field surveys could open up a new window on the obscured accretion activity in the Universe

Modeling highly volatile and seasonal markets: evidence from the Nord Pool electricity market

In this paper we address the issue of modeling spot electricity prices. After analyzing factors leading to the unobservable in other financial or commodity markets price dynamics we propose a mean reverting jump diffusion model. We fit the model to data from the Nord Pool power exchange and find that it nearly duplicates the spot price's main characteristics. The model can thus be used for risk management and pricing derivatives written on the spot electricity price.electricity price, mean reversion, wavelet transform, jump diffusion model

The aim is to find out the views of the people of Lenggopan Village on the preservation of Gondang Brogong art and the contribution of this perspective to the preservation of Gondang Brogong. Through qualitative research, with the basis of tracing the oral history of Gondang Brogong art and several concepts regarding the preservation of local culture, the research is directed to find out how to preserve Gondang Brogong art. The results of the study prove that Gondang Brogong in Lenggopan Village is still sustainable today, because its presence in traditional ceremonies cannot be replaced by other arts. For the people of Lenggopan if an event does not feature Gondang Brogong, then the event is considered not festive and sacred. Keywords: preservation; traditional art; Gondang Brogong; Pasir PangaraianAbstrakPenelitian ini membahas tentang bentuk dan semangat pelestarian kesenian Gondang Brogong di Desa Lenggopan, Pasir Pangaraian. More than just halo mass: Modelling how the red galaxy fraction depends on multiscale density in a HOD framework

The fraction of galaxies with red colours depends sensitively on environment, and on the way in which environment is measured. To distinguish competing theories for the quenching of star formation, a robust and complete description of environment is required, to be applied to a large sample of galaxies. The environment of galaxies can be described using the density field of neighbours on multiple scales - the multiscale density field. We are using the Millennium simulation and a simple HOD prescription which describes the multiscale density field of Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 galaxies to investigate the dependence of the fraction of red galaxies on the environment. Using a volume limited sample where we have sufficient galaxies in narrow density bins, we have more dynamic range in halo mass and density for satellite galaxies than for central galaxies. Therefore we model the red fraction of central galaxies as a constant while we use a functional form to describe the red fraction of satellites as a function of halo mass which allows us to distinguish a sharp from a gradual transition. While it is clear that the data can only be explained by a gradual transition, an analysis of the multiscale density field on different scales suggests that colour segregation within the haloes is needed to explain the results. We also rule out a sharp transition for central galaxies, within the halo mass range sampled.Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication by MNRA

Degrees of causality an assessment of endogenous contributors to instability in jordan, syria, & turkey

    Get PDF
The political instability of the Middle East is often perceived to be derived primarily from the interaction of Middle Eastern nations with external forces; with significant emphasis placed upon the disruptive effects of modern colonialism and Westernization. While this study does not seek to directly contest the catalytic primacy of exogenous factors, it does seek to establish the necessary causality of pre-existing internal factors. Rather than approaching the situation from a linear causal perspective, this assessment is oriented around an interdisciplinary examination of confluent factors. By examining the political history, ethno sociology, and economy of the region, the analysis investigates the underlying variables which have contributed to the instability of the Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. The primary conclusion of this analysis is that the interactions of multiple endogenous variables provide a basis of necessary causality which may be of equal causal import to that of modern colonialism and Westernization
