A study of an objective placement examination for sectioning college physics classes

    Get PDF
For several years the Department of Physics of the Missouri School of Mines has practiced sectioning of its classes in general physics. The aim has been to segregate in one section the students of superior ability, giving them a course including both the fundamentals of physics and their applications in engineering. The remainder are given a course in fundamentals without placing so much stress upon the applications...Another criterion used to supplement the first-year grade record is the student\u27s score on the Iowa Placement Examinations. The physics examination consists of two parts, the Training Series and the Aptitude Series. These examinations are administered at the first two meetings of the class in general physics, the Aptitude Examination being given on the first day and the Training Examination on the succeeding day...it was thought that the administration of the Iowa Examinations, requiring two periods, was wasteful of time. It was believed that an examination could be devised which could be administered in a single period and furnish information of sufficient worth. The MSM Physics Placement Examination was the result. This investigation is concerned with a critical study of the examination. the aims of the study are to determine the probable worth of the examination as a unit and as compared with similar examinations --Introduction, page 1-3

Lower Extremity Strength and Mechanics During Jumping in Women With Patellofemoral Pain

    Get PDF
Context: Lower extremity (LE) weakness might be associated with altered mechanics during weight bearing in subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Objective: To analyze LE strength, mechanics, and the association between these variables among women with and without PFPS during a simulated athletic task. Design: Case control. Setting: Motion-analysis laboratory. Subjects: 20 women with PFPS and 20 healthy women. Main Outcome Measures: Peak isometric lateral trunk-flexion, hipabduction, hip external-rotation, knee-flexion, and knee-extension strength, as well as hip- and knee-joint excursions and angular impulses during single-leg jumps. Results: PFPS subjects produced less hip-abduction, hip external-rotation, and trunk lateral- flexion force than the control group. The PFPS group also demonstrated greater hipadduction excursion and hip-abduction impulses. The association between the strength measurements and LE mechanics was low. Conclusions: Women with PFPS demonstrate specific weaknesses and altered LE mechanics. Weakness is not, however, highly correlated with observed differences in mechanics. ABSTRACT FROM AUTHO

Evaluating the Economic and Social Impact of the National Broadband Network

    Get PDF
Governments the world over are developing policy and implementing broadband infrastructure for the purpose of improving access to and availability of broadband for businesses and citizenry based on assumptions that broadband infrastructure will return economic and social benefits. However, little research has been done that evaluates the impact of implementations of broadband infrastructure and/or the community benefit in access to broadband or indeed the potential disadvantage to communities that do not have adequate access to broadband. The Australian government has recently announced that Tasmania will be the first State to deploy the national broadband network (NBN) initiative. Consequently now is an ideal time to establish a baseline against which the economic and social impacts of the implementation in the state might be usefully measured and interpreted. This paper reviews academic and practitioner literature examining the social and economic impact of broadband and presents a proposed research framework for evaluating this important area within the Tasmanian and Australian context
