Using permeable membranes to produce hydrogen and oxygen from water
Concept may make it profitable to obtain hydrogen fuel from water. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that method enables decomposition of water several orders of magnitude beyond equilibrium state where only small amounts of free hydrogen are present
State space collapse and diffusion approximation for a network operating under a fair bandwidth sharing policy
We consider a connection-level model of Internet congestion control,
introduced by Massouli\'{e} and Roberts [Telecommunication Systems 15 (2000)
185--201], that represents the randomly varying number of flows present in a
network. Here, bandwidth is shared fairly among elastic document transfers
according to a weighted -fair bandwidth sharing policy introduced by Mo
and Walrand [IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking 8 (2000) 556--567] []. Assuming Poisson arrivals and exponentially distributed document
sizes, we focus on the heavy traffic regime in which the average load placed on
each resource is approximately equal to its capacity. A fluid model (or
functional law of large numbers approximation) for this stochastic model was
derived and analyzed in a prior work [Ann. Appl. Probab. 14 (2004) 1055--1083]
by two of the authors. Here, we use the long-time behavior of the solutions of
the fluid model established in that paper to derive a property called
multiplicative state space collapse, which, loosely speaking, shows that in
diffusion scale, the flow count process for the stochastic model can be

The Construction of Sorkin Triangulations
Some time ago, Sorkin (1975) reported investigations of the time evolution
and initial value problems in Regge calculus, for one triangulation each of the
manifolds and . Here we display the simple, local characteristic
of those triangulations which underlies the structure found by Sorkin, and
emphasise its general applicability, and therefore the general validity of
Sorkin's conclusions. We also make some elementary observations on the
resulting structure of the time evolution and initial value problems in Regge

Start-to-end modelling of a mode-locked optical klystron free electron laser amplifier
A free electron laser (FEL) in a mode-locked optical klystron (MLOK) configuration is modelled using start-to-end simulations that simulate realistic electron beam acceleration and transport before input into a full three-dimensional FEL simulation code. These simulations demonstrate that the MLOK scheme is compatible with the present generation of radiofrequency accelerator designs. A train of few-optical cycle pulses is predicted with peak powers similar to those of the equivalent conventional FEL amplifier. The role of electron beam energy modulation in these results is explained and the limitations of some simulation codes discussed. It is shown how seeding the FEL interaction using a High Harmonic seed laser can improve the coherence properties of the output
Nonlocal Effective Field Equations for Quantum Cosmology
The possibility that the strength of gravitational interactions might slowly
increase with distance, is explored by formulating a set of effective field
equations, which incorporate the gravitational, vacuum-polarization induced,
running of Newton's constant . The resulting long distance (or large time)
behaviour depends on only one adjustable parameter , and the implications
for the Robertson-Walker universe are calculated, predicting an accelerated

Factors Affecting Italian Ryegrass (\u3cem\u3eLolium multiflorum\u3c/em\u3e L.) Seed Distribution
Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) can be a productive and high-quality cool-season forage in the Southern Great Plains of the U.S.A, if it is managed to produce sufficient seed for effective reestablishment without compromising forage yield. Before the re-seeding dynamics of Italian ryegrass can be modeled an understanding of seed production, seed-shed, and seed dispersal is necessary. Here two factors affecting Italian ryegrass seed dispersal and distribution are examined – wind and cultivation practice (mowing and raking)
The Effect of Harvest Management on Forage Production and Self-Reseeding Potential of Italian Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum L.)
Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) (IRG) can be managed to produce a seed output sufficient for effective re-establishment, without compromising forage yield, it may provide an alternative to perennial cool-season grasses in the Southern Great Plains of the U.S.A. The reduction in cost of replanting and avoidance of cultivation offered by a self-seeding crop may be particularly useful in low-input production systems. We examined the effect of dates of initial harvest in spring and of partial harvests on forage yield, seed output and re-establishment of Italian ryegrass
Overseeding Unimproved Warm-Season Pasture with Cool- and Warm-Season Legumes to Enhance Forage Productivity
Overseeding forage legumes into existing warm-season pasture may help to reduce cool-season forage deficit on small and resource-limited small farms in the southern Great Plains of the United States. Unimproved warm-season grass pastures were overseeded with Korean lespedeza (Lespedeza stipulacea Maxim) were not overseeded with summer legume. These same plots were subsequently overseeded with hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), crownvetch (Coronilla varia L.), black medic (Medicago lupulina L.) or ladino white clover (Trifolium repens L.) or, not overseeded with cool-season legume. Including lespedeza in a forage mixture increased total forage yield by an average of 15%, or 1700 kg ha-1 over 4 years. Overseeding with cool-season legumes provided a net benefit in total annual forage yield of 0.75 kg for each 1.0 kg of legume produced. Yield increases resulting from overseeding with hairy vetch or black medic were largely limited to the harvest season following sowing, while overseeded crownvetch or white clover provided limited short- to medium-term yield benefit. Improvement of low-productivity pasture resulting from legume introduction is likely to be slow and will require sustained management input to ensure the presence of a productive legume plant stand
A Very Large Array 3.6cm continuum survey of Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars
We report the results of a survey of radio continuum emission of Galactic
Wolf-Rayet stars north of declination -46 degrees. The observations were
obtained at 8.46 GHz (3.6cm) using the Very Large Array (VLA), with an angular
resolution of about 6 x 9 arcsec and typical rms noise of 0.04 mJy/beam. Our
survey of 34 WR stars resulted in 15 definite and 5 probable detections, 13 of
these for the first time at radio wavelengths. All detections are unresolved.
Time variations in flux are confirmed in the cases of WR98a, WR104, WR105 and
WR125. WR79a and WR89 are also variable in flux and we suspect they are also
non-thermal emitters. Thus, of our sample 20-30% of the detected stars are
non-thermal emiters. Average mass loss rates determinations obtained excluding
definite and suspected non-thermal cases give similar values for WN (all
subtypes) and WC5-7 stars, while a lower value was obtained for WC8-9 stars.
Uncertainties in stellar distances largely contribute to the observed scatter
in mass loss rates. Upper limits to the mass loss rates were obtained in cases
of undetected sources or for sources which probably show additional non-thermal
