    Circadian clocks and breast cancer

    Get PDF
Circadian clocks respond to environmental time cues to coordinate 24-hour oscillations in almost every tissue of the body. In the breast, circadian clocks regulate the rhythmic expression of numerous genes. Disrupted expression of circadian genes can alter breast biology and may promote cancer. Here we overview circadian mechanisms, and the connection between the molecular clock and breast biology. We describe how disruption of circadian genes contributes to cancer via multiple mechanisms, and link this to increased tumour risk in women who work irregular shift patterns. Understanding the influence of circadian rhythms on breast cancer could lead to more efficacious therapies, reformed public health policy and improved patient outcome

Black Online, Doctoral Psychology Graduates\u27 Academic Achievement: A Phenomenological Self-Directed Learning Perspective

    Get PDF
Guided by the conceptual framework of self-directed learning and culture, this study investigated the effectiveness of Title IV private, for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs). Little research has examined this topic, which is problematic considering the disproportionate rate of student loan defaults experienced by Black FPCU borrowers. A phenomenological design was used to explore the meaning of academic achievement for Black doctorate recipients who attained a doctorate in psychology through an FPCU. This study specifically examined how Black students experience the completion of doctoral psychology programs at 2 FPCUs and what factors contributed to these students finishing their degrees. A unique-criterion-purposive sample of 7 Black students who completed doctoral psychology programs at FPCUs within the past 5 years was recruited to participate in telephone interviews. Moustakas\u27 data analysis steps were applied to the data. The results indicated that study participants saw an association between attaining their doctorates in psychology and their self-actualization. They shared the experiences of selecting a suitable FPCU, choosing a specialty area, negotiating transfer credits, completing the doctoral coursework phase, and completing the dissertation phase. Their commitment to achieving self-actualization was a salient experience in finishing their degrees. A core aspect of self-actualization was their cultural knowledge, which helped them to overcome challenges and persevere. However, the results uncovered some insufficiencies in the FPCUs\u27 practices. They have implications for positive social change by highlighting how FPCU academic support services might use cultural knowledge and self-actualization strategies to maximize the successful matriculation of Black students

Quark model predictions for KK^* photoproduction on the proton

The photoproduction of KK^* vector mesons is investigated in a quark model with an effective Lagrangian. Including both baryon resonance excitations and {\it t}-channel exchanges, observables for the reactions γpK0Σ+\gamma p\to K^{*0}\Sigma^+ and γpK+Σ0\gamma p\to K^{*+}\Sigma^0 are predicted, using the SU(3)-flavor-blind assumption of non-perturbative QCD.Comment: Revtex, 3 eps figures, revised version accepted by PRC Rapid Comm

The Pursuit of a Meaningful Life Through Taoism and the Golden Ratio

What constitutes a meaningful life is perhaps the most crucial question we can ask ourselves throughout our lifetime; for what we know, the desire to become knowledgeable of a definitive answer is a journey traveled by humans as early as the 6th century BCE. Nonetheless, history illustrates various paths that brave individuals took to provide guidelines for today’s society to reflect on and choose whether or not they wish to follow them. To portray some of these philosophies in greater detail, we begin by exploring the term “meaning” from a metaphysical perspective and then the categories such philosophies might fall under. Our main discussion will emphasize a mathematical concept that might initially seem insufficient in answering such a complex and abstract question. However, by evaluating the mystical and mathematical properties of the Golden Ratio, we might get a glimpse into how we could begin to answer what makes one’s life meaningful. This mathematical phenomenon alone might still not be enough to convince readers that it has a place in living a meaningful life, so I will also introduce a philosophy that, coincidentally, began in the 6th century BCE - Taoism. The development of this philosophy, despite not being as well-known or practiced as other belief systems, provides fascinating insights, which we will notice have similarities with what we illustrate through Phi (Φ). I conclude that this seemingly unexpected synergy between Taoism and the Golden Ratio demonstrates a valid relationship that mathematics has with portraying how we can live well

Economic Feasibility of Rainwater Harvesting:A Case Study at Morehead State University

    Get PDF
Rainwater harvesting (RWH) was primarily considered as a source for freshwater supply or a conservation practice for over coming water shortages in drought prone areas. By retaining storm-water run-off for on site use, harvesting systems reduce the runoff volumes and pollutant masses entering waterways. Consequently, using roof-top RWH as a best management practice has been encouraged by many state and local governments. Some of the most interesting aspects of RWH are the methods of capture, storage, and the use of this natural resource at the place it occurs.https://scholarworks.moreheadstate.edu/celebration_posters_2022/1042/thumbnail.jp

Superconductivity at 2.3 K in the misfit compound (PbSe)1.16(TiSe2)2

The structural misfit compound (PbSe)1.16(TiSe2)2 is reported. It is a superconductor with a Tc of 2.3 K. (PbSe)1.16(TiSe2)2 derives from a parent compound, TiSe2, which shows a charge density wave transition and no superconductivity. The crystal structure, characterized by high resolution electron microscopy and powder x-ray diffraction, consists of two layers of 1T-TiSe2 alternating with a double layer of (100) PbSe. Transport measurements suggest that the superconductivity is induced by charge transfer from the PbSe layers to the TiSe2 layers.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures. To be published in Physical Review
