NCEA level 3 economics and economic literacy in introductory economics at University

In 2003, New Zealand significantly reorganised high school education by moving to a standards-based assessment approach. This paper investigates whether the economics standards are associated with economic understanding using 2008-2011 data from students at the University of Waikato. We find that there is significant association between NCEA economics and economic literacy. However, some standards have a much closer association with economic literacy, in particular AS90631 and AS90632. These standards are the only standards associated with economic literacy for both high aptitude and low aptitude students. An optimal high school course in economics should include these standards as a minimum

A Study of the United States Influence on German Eugenics.

This thesis is a study of the influence and effects that the United States had upon Germany from the rise of eugenics to its fall following the end of World War II. There are three stages to this study. First, I examine the rise of eugenics in the United States from its inception to the end of World War I and the influence it had upon Germany. Then I examine the interwar era along with the popularization of eugenics within both countries before concluding with the Second World War and post war era. My thesis focuses on both the active and passive influences that the United States had upon German eugenics and racial hygiene in the twentieth century. This study uses a wide range of primary and secondary sources. Many of the authors are experts in their field while the visuals are a window into understanding how eugenics was spread to the public

MVMX Bleacher Restoration

I completed a service learning project restoring a set of viewing bleachers for the local non-profit organization, The Magic Valley Motocross Association (MVMX). Over the last year MVMX has been slowly building a motocross track for the local and regional motocross community. In order to share our passion for motocross with the general public, the viewing bleachers needed severe restoration before being considered safe for use. The goal was to meet specific standards of safety for use and reduce liability concerns on the organization. The project was successfully completed with a small team of fabricators and volunteers and we are looking forward to seeing the bleachers be used next motocross racing season

On the simulation of enzymatic digest patterns: the fragmentation of oligomeric and polymeric galacturonides by endo-polygalacturonase II

A simulation methodology for predicting the time-course of enzymatic digestions is described. The model is based solely on the enzyme's subsite architecture and concomitant binding energies. This allows subsite binding energies to be used to predict the evolution of the relative amounts of different products during the digestion of arbitrary mixtures of oligomeric or polymeric substrates. The methodology has been specifically demonstrated by studying the fragmentation of a population of oligogalacturonides of varying degrees of polymerization, when digested by endo-polygalacturonase II (endo-PG II) from Aspergillus niger.Comment: Preprint - has been accepted to Biochimica et Biophysica Act

Segal-Bargmann Transforms Associated to a Family of Coupled Supersymmetries

The Segal-Bargmann transform is a Lie algebra and Hilbert space isomorphism between real and complex representations of the oscillator algebra. The Segal-Bargmann transform is useful in time-frequency analysis as it is closely related to the short-time Fourier transform. The Segal-Bargmann space provides a useful example of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. Coupled supersymmetries (coupled SUSYs) are generalizations of the quantum harmonic oscillator that have a built-in supersymmetric nature and enjoy similar properties to the quantum harmonic oscillator. In this paper, we will develop Segal-Bargmann transforms for a specific class of coupled SUSYs which includes the quantum harmonic oscillator as a special case. We will show that the associated Segal-Bargmann spaces are distinct from the usual Segal-Bargmann space: their associated weight functions are no longer Gaussian and are spanned by stricter subsets of the holomorphic polynomials. The coupled SUSY Segal-Bargmann spaces provide new examples of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

Welland Canals Society fonds, 1979-1991

The Welland Canals Society was a coalition of business, tourism, heritage, and recreational groups that joined with the Regional Government in 1986 to promote the redevelopment of the Welland Canals Corridor. The mandate of the Society was to provide leadership and assistance to the public and private sectors in achieving heritage-sensitive and tourism/recreation-related economic development in the Welland Canals Corridor. The Society folded in 1991 due to government funding cuts.Fonds consists of records and other material accumulated by the Welland Canals Society. Fonds includes reports, guides, surveys and studies, Board minutes and Executive Committee Minutes, newspaper clippings and administrative files. Fonds also includes slides, photographs, transparencies and 1 cassette tape
