PRODUCER ACCEPTANCE OF A NEW PEANUT MARKETING COOPERATIVE: A SURVEY OF GEORGIA PEANUT PRODUCERS

Market conduct has become an important issue for peanut farmers. Consolidation in the first buyer market, increased imports, and political uncertainty have increased peanut producers' marketing risks. The purpose of this paper was to examine demographic differences in peanut producers' perceptions of the current marketing environment as well as their attitudes towards new marketing institutions. A standard t-test revealed that producers growing more than 250 acres of peanuts, irrigating at least 50 percent of their peanuts, and producers located in Southwest Georgia were statistically more dissatisfied with the current marketing environment and significantly more receptive to forming a new generation peanut cooperative.Agribusiness, Crop Production/Industries,

A NEW GENERATION PEANUT COOPERATIVE IN GEORGIA: A BENEFIT-COST ANALYSIS

A survey of Georgia peanut producers revealed that the Southwest corner of Georgia could be targeted for a new generation peanut cooperative (FS 01-07). The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility of this option. Preliminary results revealed that this might be an economically feasible solution to peanut producers' marketing problems. Compact QED3 with theta term and axionic confining strings

We discuss three dimensional compact QED with a theta term due to an axionic field. The variational gauge invariant functional is considered and it is shown that the ground state energy is independent of theta in a leading approximation. The mass gap of the axionic field is found to be dependent upon theta, the mass gap of the photon field and the scalar potential. The vacuum expectation of the Wilson loop is shown to be independent of theta in a leading approximation, to obey the area law and to lead to confinement. Enhancing semantic congruity effects with category-contingent comparative judgments

In each of two experiments the direction of a binary comparison was contingent on the category of the stimulus pair. In one experiment, participants had to compare the size of animals from memory. On congruent trials, they had to select the smaller animal if both were small and the larger if both were large and on incongruent trials they selected the larger if both were small and the smaller if both were large. In a second experiment, participants had to compare visual extents and the direction of the comparison was contingent on whether the lines were short or long. RTs were increased and semantic congruity effects were greatly amplified with the category contingent instructions relative to the conventional non-contingent instructions, precisely as predicted by the class of evidence accrual models of decisional processing and contrary to the single sample stage models of the semantic congruity effect

Structural Insights into DNA Polymerase β Deterrents for Misincorporation Support an Induced-Fit Mechanism for Fidelity

AbstractDNA polymerases generally select the correct nucleotide from a pool of structurally similar molecules to preserve Watson-Crick base-pairing rules. We report the structure of DNA polymerase β with DNA mismatches situated in the polymerase active site. This was achieved by using nicked product DNA that traps the mispair (template-primer, A-C or T-C) in the nascent base pair binding pocket. The structure of each mispair complex indicates that the bases do not form hydrogen bonds with one another, but form a staggered arrangement where the bases of the mispair partially overlap. This prevents closure/opening of the N subdomain that is believed to be required for catalytic cycling. The partially open conformation of the N subdomain results in distinct hydrogen bonding networks that are unique for each mispair. These structures define diverse molecular aspects of misinsertion that are consistent with the induced-fit model for substrate specificity

Sternal non-union in a professional hockey player: considerations for return to play

We describe a healthy 40-year old professional hockey player with an asymptomatic sternal non-union following aortic root surgery. The purpose of this case report is to make orthopedic surgeons aware of the possibility of this complication following sternotomy, and to discuss the considerations involved in return to play in contact sports. We will discuss our work-up, evaluation, and management of a sternal non-union in a professional athlete. Patient's consent has been obtained
