    GE Astro-Space Division, Pnnceton, New Jersey, has joined with MBB-ERNO of Germany* Aerltalla, and MATRA, in proposing a program employing two spacecraft which would offer flight opportunities to the space science community in the 1990s. The first of these spacecraft would be obtained by transfer of the European Retrievable Carrier (EURECA) to this initiative. EURECA is a spacecraft currently under development, scheduled for launch in May 1991 and retrieval in January 1992. The second spacecraft, called the - Autonomous Microgravity Industrial Carrier (AMIGA), would also be built, as a\u27 duplicate of EURECA... The entire program is referred to as the AMIGA Initiative. AMICA Is a free-flyer spacecraft that features the highest degree of mlcrogravlty, extended flight duration, cleanliness, retrlevablllty and re-flight. \u27It. Is therefore a key element 1n the 1990s Industrialization of space. The program evolves from the EURECA. program which will in 11991 carry a variety of experiments In Solar Physics, Atmospheric Physics, Gamma-Ray Astronomy, Astrophysics* Materials Science, Life Science, and technology development. The EURECA spacecraft, in turn, employs techniques used in the Shuttle Pallet Satellite. AMIGA, therefore, represents a low-risk approach based on extensive space flight experience

    Electromagnetic meson form factor from a relativistic coupled-channel approach

    Point-form relativistic quantum mechanics is used to derive an expression for the electromagnetic form factor of a pseudoscalar meson for space-like momentum transfers. The elastic scattering of an electron by a confined quark-antiquark pair is treated as a relativistic two-channel problem for the qqˉeq\bar{q}e and qqˉeγq\bar{q}e\gamma states. With the approximation that the total velocity of the qqˉeq\bar{q}e system is conserved at (electromagnetic) interaction vertices this simplifies to an eigenvalue problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator. After elimination of the qqˉeγq\bar{q}e\gamma channel the electromagnetic meson current and form factor can be directly read off from the one-photon-exchange optical potential. By choosing the invariant mass of the electron-meson system large enough, cluster separability violations become negligible. An equivalence with the usual front-form expression, resulting from a spectator current in the q+=0q^+=0 reference frame, is established. The generalization of this multichannel approach to electroweak form factors for an arbitrary bound few-body system is quite obvious. By an appropriate extension of the Hilbert space this approach is also able to accommodate exchange-current effects.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figure

    In human hearts, an extensive pre-existing collateral network is present. This was shown unequivocally some 50 years ago in a series of very detailed post-mortem angiographic studies. In these studies, it was also observed that the pre-existent collateral vessels enlarge upon closure of an epicardial coronary artery, resulting in large collateral conduit arteries, in sharp contrast to earlier claims that human coronary arteries are functional end arteries. These insights still form the basis for the concept of arteriogenesis as positive remodeling of pre-existent arteriolar connections. Subsequent experimental studies disclosed the putative role of circulating cells, especially monocytes, which invade the proliferating vessel wall and secrete growth factors, degrading enzymes and survival factors that are required for the development of a mature collateral circulation. Experimental stimulation of arteriogenesis is feasible but to date a relatively low number of clinical studies, with no or limited success, have been performed. The use of intracoronary derived collateral flow index can increase the sensitivity to detect the effects of pharmacological compounds on arteriogenesis, which is important in first proof-of-principle studies. These invasive measurements also allow the detection of patients with an innate defect in their arteriogenic response to coronary obstruction. In a reversed bedside-to-bench approach, the characterization of ribonucleic acid and protein expression patterns in these patients generated new targets for therapeutic arteriogenesis

    A Helium-Surface Interaction Potential of Bi2_2Te3_3(111) from Ultrahigh-Resolution Spin-Echo Measurements

    We have determined an atom-surface interaction potential for the He−-Bi2_2Te3_3(111) system by analysing ultrahigh resolution measurements of selective adsorption resonances. The experimental measurements were obtained using 3^3He spin-echo spectrometry. Following an initial free-particle model analysis, we use elastic close-coupling calculations to obtain a three-dimensional potential. The three-dimensional potential is then further refined based on the experimental data set, giving rise to an optimised potential which fully reproduces the experimental data. Based on this analysis, the He−-Bi2_2Te3_3(111) interaction potential can be described by a corrugated Morse potential with a well depth D=(6.22±0.05) meVD=(6.22\pm0.05)~\mathrm{meV}, a stiffness Îș=(0.92±0.01) A˚−1\kappa =(0.92\pm0.01)~\mathrm{\AA}^{-1} and a surface electronic corrugation of (9.6±0.2)(9.6\pm0.2)% of the lattice constant. The improved uncertainties of the atom-surface interaction potential should also enable the use in inelastic close-coupled calculations in order to eventually study the temperature dependence and the line width of selective adsorption resonances

    Plasma Leptin Levels and Incidence of Heart Failure, Cardiovascular Disease, and Total Mortality in Elderly Individuals

    OBJECTIVE: Obesity predisposes individuals to congestive heart failure (CHF) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Leptin regulates energy homeostasis, is elevated in obesity, and influences ventricular and vascular remodeling. We tested the hypothesis that leptin levels are associated with greater risk of CHF, CVD, and mortality in elderly individuals. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We evaluated 818 elderly (mean age 79 years, 62% women) Framingham Study participants attending a routine examination at which plasma leptin was assayed. RESULTS: Leptin levels were higher in women and strongly correlated with BMI (P < 0.0001). On follow-up (mean 8.0 years), 129 (of 775 free of CHF) participants developed CHF, 187 (of 532 free of CVD) experienced a first CVD event, and 391 individuals died. In multivariable Cox regression models adjusting for established risk factors, log-leptin was positively associated with incidence of CHF and CVD (hazard ratio [HR] per SD increment 1.26 [95% CI 1.03–1.55] and 1.28 [1.09–1.50], respectively). Additional adjustment for BMI nullified the association with CHF (0.97 [0.75–1.24]) but only modestly attenuated the relation to CVD incidence (1.23 [1.00–1.51], P = 0.052). We observed a nonlinear, U-shaped relation between log-leptin and mortality (P = 0.005 for quadratic term) with greater risk of death evident at both low and high leptin levels. CONCLUSIONS: In our moderate-sized community-based elderly sample, higher circulating leptin levels were associated with a greater risk of CHF and CVD, but leptin did not provide incremental prognostic information beyond BMI.     Selected breakpoints of net forest carbon uptake at four eddy-covariance sites

    Extensive studies are available that analyse time series of carbon dioxide and water flux measurements of FLUXNET sites over many years and link these results to climate change such as changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, air temperature and growing season length and other factors. Many of the sites show trends to a larger carbon uptake. Here we analyse time series of net ecosystem exchange, gross primary production, respiration, and evapotranspiration of four forest sites with particularly long measurement periods of about 20 years. The regular trends shown are interrupted by periods with higher or lower increases of carbon uptake. These breakpoints can be of very different origin and include forest decline, increased vegetation period, drought effects, heat waves, and changes in site heterogeneity. The influence of such breakpoints should be included in long-term studies of land-atmosphere exchange processes.Peer reviewe
