    An analysis of competition and distribution in the Tennessee structural composite market

    The Tennessee hardwood timber resource has opportunity for increased use. Establishment of a structural composite panel plant in Tennessee would provide new markets for Tennessee hardwoods. The purpose of this study is to begin a Market Opportunity Analysis (MOA) to assess the opportunity of success for a structural composite panel plant in Tennessee. A channel and competition analysis were the two parts of a MOA completed for this study. The market share of structural composite panels at the retail and intermediary level of the Tennessee market is approximately 31 percent. A majority of the panels produced and distributed to the Tennessee market were in the 7/16 thickness category. Nineteen manufacturers sold panels in Tennessee markets. Of the structural composite panels produced 75.9 percent were Oriented Strandboard (OSB) and the remainder (24.1 percent) waferboard. Rail is the major mode of transport manufacturers use to ship structural composite panels (58.2 percent), and a majority of panels (63.1 percent) are shipped to intermediaries via the same mode. However 94.3% of retailers receive their panels via truck. As the go-between for manufacturers and retailers, intermediaries perform two important functions in the channel: 1) facilitate the transport of structural composite panels and 2) reduce bulk loads from manufacturers into smaller shipment for distribution to retailers (break-bulk). It is concluded that the marketing scheme of a potential Tennessee manufacturer should target intermediaries. Very few panels are shipped directly from manufacturers to consumers. Most panels (89.9%) are shipped to intermediaries for distribution

    Preliminary Analysis of ISS Maintenance History and Implications for Supportability of Future Missions

    The International Space Station (ISS) enables the study of supportability issues associated with long-duration human spaceflight. The ISS is a large, complex spacecraft that must be maintained by its crew. In contrast to the Space Shuttle Orbiter vehicle, but similar to spacecraft that will be component elements of future missions beyond low-Earth orbit, ISS does not return to the ground for servicing and provisioning of spares is severely constrained by transportation limits. Although significant technical support is provided by ground personnel, all hands-on maintenance tasks are performed by the crew. It is expected that future missions to distant destinations will be further limited by lack of resupply opportunities and will, eventually, become largely independent of ground support. ISS provides an opportunity to begin learning lessons that will enable future missions to be successful. Data accumulated over the first several years of ISS operations have been analyzed to gain a better understanding of maintenance-related workload. This analysis addresses both preventive and corrective maintenance and includes all U.S segment core systems. Systems and tasks that are major contributors to workload are identified. As further experience accrues, lessons will be learned that will influence future system designs so that they require less maintenance and, when maintenance is required, it can be performed more efficiently. By heeding the lessons of ISS it will be possible to identify system designs that should be more robust and point towards advances in both technology and design that will offer the greatest return on investment

    Dust Grains and the Luminosity of Circumnuclear Water Masers in Active Galaxies

    In previous calculations for the luminosities of 22 GHz water masers, the pumping is reduced and ultimately quenched with increasing depth into the gas because of trapping of the infrared (approximately equals 30-150 micrometers), spectral line radiation of the water molecule. When the absorption (and reemission) of infrared radiation by dust grains is included, we demonstrate that the pumping is no longer quenched but remains constant with increasing optical depth. A temperature difference between the grains and the gas is required. Such conditions are expected to occur, for example, in the circumnuclear masing environments created by X-rays in active galaxies. Here, the calculated 22 GHz maser luminosities are increased by more than an order of magnitude. Application to the well-studied, circumnuclear masing disk in the galaxy NGC 4258 yields a maser luminosity near that inferred from observations if the observed X-ray flux is assumed to be incident onto only the inner surface of the disk
