In Vino Veritas: Old Wine Markets in New Global Economic Battles
Wine markets have supported regional cultures and international alliances for centuries. Renaissance diplomatic and dramatic language refers to French markets, not economies, extending globally from Bordeaux to the Far East. Yet Shakespeare invents our representation of the global economy’s ill- gotten gains and predatory speculation in wine (and other) markets. Prince Hal leverages the very wine market that he derides obsessively into a narrative of sin and redemption. Hal consummates his narrative by rejecting Falstaff, whom he identifies as an earthly Bacchus. But Burgundy’s pragmatic representation of the excellence of viniculture in Henry V fits the paradigm of sustainable marketplaces in part because the symbolism of fine wine is universally esteemed. Today’s economic crisis proves that the quasi-Hegelian idea of an ethical economy cannot be attained through financial interdependence alone. Moreover, it validates the Renaissance narrative that responsible wine markets improve with age

The Life and Death of a Tectonic Plate: Imaging the Juan de Fuca Plate with Amphibious Seismic Data
Understanding of Earth’s evolution has been hindered, in part, by the technical challenges associated with placing seismic instruments on the seafloor. As technology improves, more arrays of ocean bottom seismometers are being deployed around the ocean basins. Perhaps the most ambitious such array, the Cascadia Initiative, covered the entirety of a small oceanic plate, the Juan de Fuca plate, with ocean bottom seismometers in a four-year experiment. That array is the primary motivation for this study. The two models presented in this work, CASC16-P and CASC19-S, are teleseismic tomographic studies. They are each the first of their kind to use offshore and onshore data to simultaneously image the P- and S-wave seismic velocity structure of the mantle beneath the Juan de Fuca and North American plates. These models have provided insight into the tectonics of oceanic plates: how they are created, how they might interact with the mantle over the course of their life, how they might be influenced by an overriding continental plate, how they behave in the mantle after subduction, and how subduction could cease. This work focuses on the on- and offshore regions of the Pacific Northwest of the United States—in particular, on the interaction between the Juan de Fuca plate, the North American plate, and the upper mantle. But it also demonstrates the value in oceanic arrays. The offshore instruments used in this study have allowed the identification of new features offshore, and better resolution of features near the coastlines. Ocean bottom seismology represents a rapidly growing new frontier that has the potential to investigate earth evolution in detail that was not previously possible. The work we present here has both helped illuminate the tectonics of the Pacific Northwest, and helped generate detailed hypotheses about the nature of global tectonics that will be tested elsewhere
Teaching Combinations of Men Physical Education Teachers in the High Schools for Negroes in the State of Arkansas
What are the teaching combinations of teachers of physical education in the Negro high schools in the state of Arkansas? The problem considered in this investigation is one of determining the subject which men physical education teachers are required to teach in the high schools for Negroes in the state of Arkansas. Particular emphasis will be placed on those subjects that are not ordinarily included in the field of physical education.
The purposes of this study are: 1. To ascertain the teaching combinations of the physical education instructors in the Negro high schools in the state of Arkansas. 2. To determine what subjects a prospective teacher of high school physical education should be prepared to teach. 3. To provide information that may be helpful to those institutions which are responsible for the preparation of Negro teachers in the state of Arkansas
The Eli Whitney Forest: A Demonstration of Forestry Practice
This publication has been prepared as a contribution toward solving some of the forestry problems with which owners of woodland are confronted. Forest conditions and details and methods of forest management on one property, the Eli Whitney Forest, are set forth here in the hope that the recital may provide a helpful object lesson
