An operations research study was conducted concerning inventory behavior on the space station. Historical data from the Space Shuttle was used. The results demonstrated a high logistics burden if Space Shuttle reliability technology were to be applied without modification to space station design (which it was not). Effects of rapid resupply and on board repair capabilities on inventory behavior were investigated

THE OXIDATION OF SECONDARY ALCOHOLS BY DIPOTASSIUM TETRAOXOFERRATE (VI) IN CONCENTRATED AND DILUTE POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTIONS

Potassium ferrate of known purity was used to oxidize three alcohols (propanol-2, 1,1,1-trifluoropropanol-2, and 1,1,1,3,3,3- hexafluoropropanol-2) in 8 ~ potassium hydroxide, and a series of substituted phenyltrifluoromethyl carbinols (m-nitrophenyl-, m-bromophenyl-, p-methylphenyl-, and unsubstituted) in 0.5 ~potassium hydroxide and 3.5 ~potassium fluoride. The reactions were found to obey pseudofirst order kinetics and shown to be first order in ferrate ion and first order in alkoxy i on (ionized carbinol or alcohol); acetone production I from the oxidation of propanol-2 al so followed first order kinetics; oxygen evolution was 3/2 order· in some reactive intermediate, other than iron-VI. Deuterium isotope effects show that the breaking of the C-1! bond on the alpha-carbon is the rate determining step for the oxidation. The isotope effects also indicate, by applying the Swain Criteria, that a hydride mechanism is likely. The salt effect, isokinetic relationship, and Hammett plot all give confirmation of the suggested hydride mechanism

Monitoring Frequency of Intra‐Fraction Patient Motion Using the ExacTrac System for LINAC‐based SRS Treatments

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the intra‐fractional patient motion using the ExacTrac system in LINAC‐based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Method: A retrospective analysis of 104 SRS patients with kilovoltage image‐guided setup (Brainlab ExacTrac) data was performed. Each patient was imaged pre‐treatment, and at two time points during treatment (1st and 2nd mid‐treatment), and bony anatomy of the skull was used to establish setup error at each time point. The datasets included the translational and rotational setup error, as well as the time period between image acquisitions. After each image acquisition, the patient was repositioned using the calculated shift to correct the setup error. Only translational errors were corrected due to the absence of a 6D treatment table. Setup time and directional shift values were analyzed to determine correlation between shift magnitudes as well as time between acquisitions. Results: The average magnitude translation was 0.64 ± 0.59 mm, 0.79 ± 0.45 mm, and 0.65 ± 0.35 mm for the pre‐treatment, 1st mid‐treatment, and 2nd mid‐treatment imaging time points. The average time from pre‐treatment image acquisition to 1st mid‐treatment image acquisition was 7.98 ± 0.45 min, from 1st to 2nd mid‐treatment image was 4.87 ± 1.96 min. The greatest translation was 3.64 mm, occurring in the pre‐treatment image. No patient had a 1st or 2nd mid‐treatment image with greater than 2 mm magnitude shifts. Conclusion: There was no correlation between patient motion over time, in direction or magnitude, and duration of treatment. The imaging frequency could be reduced to decrease imaging dose and treatment time without significant changes in patient position

Observations of Hierarchical Solar-Type Multiple Star Systems

Twenty multiple stellar systems with solar-type primaries were observed at high angular resolution using the PALM-3000 adaptive optics system at the 5 m Hale telescope. The goal was to complement the knowledge of hierarchical multiplicity in the solar neighborhood by confirming recent discoveries by the visible Robo-AO system with new near-infrared observations with PALM-3000. The physical status of most, but not all, of the new pairs is confirmed by photometry in the Ks band and new positional measurements. In addition, we resolved for the first time five close sub-systems: the known astrometric binary in HIP 17129AB, companions to the primaries of HIP 33555, and HIP 118213, and the companions to the secondaries in HIP 25300 and HIP 101430.
