    Psychosocial and material pathways in the relation between income and health: a response to Lynch et al

    Summary points: Economic and social circumstances affect health through the physiological effects of their emotional and social meanings and the direct effects of material circumstances. Material conditions do not adequately explain health inequalities in rich countries. The relation between smaller inequalities in income and better population health reflects increased psychosocial wellbeing. In rich countries wellbeing is more closely related to relative income than absolute income. Social dominance, inequality, autonomy, and the quality of social relations have an impact on psychosocial wellbeing and are among the most powerful explanations for the pattern of population health in rich countries

    Effects of tanniferous browse plant supplementation on the nutrient digestibility and growth of Djallonk rams

    Two separate experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of tanniferous (CT) browse plant supplementation on the growth, nutrient digestibility and blood biochemical properties of Djallonké sheep. The browse plants were Albizia lebbeck, Gmelina arborea, Senna siamea and Ceiba pentandra and were harvested from natural grazing fields within the vicinity of Nyankpala in Ghana. In experiment I, 20 semi-intensively kept Djallonké rams with average initial weight of 12.8±1.7 kg were randomly assigned four browse plants to evaluate their performance in terms of growth and blood biochemical properties. In experiment II, eight intensively managed Djallonké rams with an average initial weight of 13.8±1.56 kg were randomly assigned to a total mixed ration (TMR) made of browse plants, rice straw, minerals and vitamins to determine the nutrient digestibility. In experiment I, whereas lambs supplemented with the highest condensed tannin (CT) browse plant (C. Pentandra) had improved (P<0.05) ADWG compared to the control, it did not differ from the ADWG reported in lambs that were supplemented with A. lebbeck even though it did not contain measurable levels of CT. The blood metabolites did not differ among treatments. In experiment II, lambs fed with S. siamea ration had the lowest DMI with the highest reported in G. arborea. Lambs fed with A. lebbeck TMR had the highest (P<0.05) CP digestibility and nitrogen balance. The lowest NDF and ADF digestibility were obtained in animals fed the G. arborea diet. The tanniferous browse plants used in this experiment were high in nutritive value and resulted in improved live weight of lambs. They could be fed as supplement to lambs grazing natural pasture during periods of feeds scarcity

    The role of rendering in relation to the BSE epidemic, the development of EU animal by‐product legislation and the reintroduction of rendered products into animal feeds

    The bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic in 1986 highlighted the importance of the rendering industry as a key component of the food supply chain. Prior to 1986 the rendering industry was poorly understood. However, following the emergence of BSE research was commissioned to characterise rendering systems and investigate their ability to inactivate transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) agents. Six rendering systems were found to be operational in Europe but their key process parameters, such as particle size, process temperature and transit time, were poorly characterised. This review describes how these key process parameters were determined and used to inform protocols for the subsequent TSE inactivation trials which subsequently shaped both EU legislation and the development of techniques used to validate rendering systems. It also describes how EU legislation banning the use of animal‐derived proteins in animal feeds ('feed ban') effectively eliminated the market for meat and bone meal (MBM) and how the rendering industry sought to 'add value' to rendered products by conducting research to support the development of new markets for rendered products. The nutritional, environmental and economic characteristics of modern processed animal proteins (PAPs) mean that they represent valuable ingredients for use in animal feeds. Recent research has paved the way for legislative changes allowing the safe reintroduction of nonruminant PAP into aqua‐feeds and may soon facilitate their reintroduction into pig and poultry feeds. However, resistance from key stakeholders in the food chain remains a significant challenge that must be overcome before their full potential can be realised. Further research is required to characterise modern PAPS and to ensure their appropriate, safe and acceptable inclusion in animal feeds

    Feeding lower-protein diets based on red clover and grass or alfalfa and corn silage does not affect milk production but improves nitrogen use efficiency in dairy cows

    Reducing the dietary crude protein (CP) concentration can decrease the financial cost and lower the environmental impact of milk production. Two studies were conducted to examine the effects of reducing the dietary CP concentration on animal performance, nutrient digestibility, milk fatty acid (FA) profile, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE; milk N/N intake) in dairy cows fed legume silage-based diets. Thirty-six multiparous Holstein-Friesian dairy cows that were 76 ± 14 (mean ± SD) days in milk and 698 ± 54 kg body weight were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square design in each of 2 studies, with 3 periods of 28 d. In study 1, cows were fed diets based on a 50:50 ratio of red clover to grass silage [dry matter (DM) basis] containing 1 of 3 dietary CP concentrations: high (H) = 175 g of CP/kg of DM; medium (M) = 165 g of CP/kg of DM; or low (L) = 150 g of CP/kg of DM. In study 2, cows were fed 175 g of CP/kg of DM with a 50:50 ratio of alfalfa to corn silage (H50) or 1 of 2 diets containing 150 g of CP/kg of DM with either a 50:50 (L50) or a 60:40 (L60) ratio of alfalfa to corn silage. Cows in both studies were fed a total mixed ration with a forage-to-concentrate ratio of 52:48 (DM basis). All diets were formulated to meet the MP requirements, except L (95% of MP requirements). In study 1, cows fed L ate 1.6 kg of DM/d less than those fed H or M, but milk yield was similar across treatments. Mean milk protein, fat, and lactose concentrations were not affected by diet. However, the apparent total-tract nutrient digestibility was decreased in cows fed L. The NUE was 5.7 percentage units higher in cows fed L than H. Feeding L also decreased milk and plasma urea concentrations by 4.4 mg/dL and 0.78 mmol/L, respectively. We found no effect of dietary treatment on the milk saturated or monounsaturated FA proportion, but the proportion of polyunsaturated FA was increased, and milk odd- and branched-chain FA decreased in cows fed L compared with H. In study 2, DM intake was 2 kg/d lower in cows receiving L50 than H50. Increasing the alfalfa content and feeding a low-CP diet (L60) did not alter DMI but decreased milk yield and milk protein concentration by 2 kg/d and 0.6 g/kg, respectively, compared with H50. Likewise, milk protein and lactose yield were decreased by 0.08 kg/d in cows receiving L60 versus H50. Diet had no effect on apparent nutrient digestibility. Feeding the low-CP diets compared with H50 increased the apparent NUE by approximately 5 percentage units and decreased milk and plasma urea concentrations by 7.2 mg/dL and 1.43 mmol/L, respectively. Dietary treatment did not alter milk FA profile except cis-9,trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid, which was higher in milk from cows receiving L60 compared with H50. We concluded that reducing CP concentration to around 150 g/kg of DM in red clover and grass or alfalfa and corn silage-based diets increases the apparent NUE and has little effect on nutrient digestibility or milk performance in dairy cows

    Effects of tropical browse plants on in vitro rumen protein degradability

    Leaves of Multi-purpose trees (MPT) provide a very important ecosystem service in the form of feed for ruminant livestock in most tropical countries. They are often fed to ruminants as supplements due to their appreciable levels of crude protein and less concentration of recalcitrant cell wall fiber.The presence of condensed tannins in tropical MPT could minimise protein degradation in the rumen, reduce rumen ammonia concentration and ultimately reduce overall dry matter digestibility. In this study, eight MPT (Ceiba pentandra, Khaya senegalensis, Senna siamea, Ficus gnaphalocarpa, Pterocarpus erinaceus, Albizia lebbeck, Azadirachta indica and Gmelina arborea) were incubated with two levels of nitrogen to test the effect of condensed tannin on in vitro ammonia nitrogen concentration. The MPT’s in another experiment were incubated in sacco to determine the extent of protein degradability. The crude protein (CP) of the MPT was in the range of 92.2 to 229 g/kg DM. The neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) were in the range of 216-307 g/kg DM, 163.4 to 291 g/kg DM and 94.8-282 g/kg DM respectively. The highest condensed tannin (CT) was obtained in F gnaphalocarpa with no CT detected in A Lebbeck. There was no effect of the MPT and nitrogen buffer interaction on the in vitro gas production parameters at 72 h. There was no difference in in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) between the two nitrogen (N) buffered rumen fluids. Leaves of MPT incubated in nitrogen sufficient (NSf) buffer consistently had a higher NH3N concentration than the nitrogen deficient (ND). However, the NH3N concentration from the ND buffer remained within levels that ensured IVDMD was not different from that of NSf. The in sacco CP degradation characteristics differed among the leaves at 72 h. A. indica had a higher proportion of its protein content being soluble. The MPT with CT had lower proportion of their protein being degraded particularly in C. pentandra. Ammonia nitrogen concentration was maintained within limits that did not negatively affect IVDMD when the leaves of the MPT were incubated in ND and Nsf

    The effect of supplemented chestnut tannin to grass silage either at ensiling or at feeding on lamb performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality

    This study was designed to investigate the effect of supplemented chestnut hydrolysable tannin (HT) both at ensiling and at feeding on lamb growth, carcass characteristic, and meat quality. Twenty tons of ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were used to produce silage. The ryegrass was treated at ensiling with one of three additives: 30 g kg-1 DM chestnut HT (GET), an inoculant as a positive control (GI), or water as a negative control (G). Another two treatments were made from ensiled grass by adding the 30 g kg-1 DM of chestnut HT to either positive (GI+T) or negative (GT) control. Forty Suffolk cross Mule lambs were used in this experiment and allocated to receive one of five experimental forage treatments with eight lambs per treatment. The diet consisted of two parts: concentrate and silage. Lambs were fed 215 g DM day-1 lamb of concentrate diet and ad libitum grass silage for seven weeks and then slaughtered. Back fat thickness tended to be lower (p= 0.07) for lambs fed the GT and GI+T treatments compared to lambs in the other experimental groups’ (10.0, 10.1, 9.8, 10.0, and 9.8 mm for GET, G, GT, GI, and GI+T, respectively). Feeding lambs GET tended to reduce (p= 0.06) meat lightness (L*) compared to the other treatments. Ammonia nitrogen concentration in rumen fluid was reduced significantly (p 0.05) on voluntary feed intake (914, 916, 899, 928, or 914 g day-1 for GET, G, GT, GI, and GI+T, respectively) or lamb performance

    Approximately forty years ago it was realized that the time development of decaying systems might not be precisely exponential. Rolf Winter (Phys. Rev. {\bf 123}, 1503 (1961)) analyzed the simplest nontrivial system - a particle tunneling out of a well formed by a wall and a delta-function. He calculated the probability current just outside the well and found irregular oscillations on a short time scale followed by an exponential decrease followed by more oscillations and finally by a decrease as a power of the time. We have reanalyzed this system, concentrating on the survival probability of the particle in the well rather than the probability current, and find a different short time behavior.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, RevTex

    The anaerobic digestion of pig carcase with or without sugar beet pulp, as a novel on-farm disposal method

    Anaerobic digestion was investigated as a potential method for on-farm disposal of fallen stock (pig carcases), degrading the carcase material to produce biogas and digestate. The effects of feedstock (sugar beet pulp or pig carcase material or a 50:50 mix) and organic loading rate (50 g-TS L−1 or 100 g-TS L−1), during mesophilic (35 °C) anaerobic digestion were investigated. Anaerobic digestion was achieved for all experimental treatments, however the pig carcase material at the higher organic loading rate produced the second highest methane yield (0.56 Nm3 kg-VS−1 versus a range of 0.14–0.58 Nm3 kg-VS−1 for other treatments), with the highest percentage of methane in total biogas (61.6% versus a range of 36.1–55.2% for all other treatments). Satisfactory pathogen reduction is a legislative requirement for disposal of carcase material. Pathogens were quantified throughout the anaerobic digestion process. Enterococcus faecalis concentrations decreased to negligible levels (2.8 log10 CFU g-TS−1), whilst Clostridium perfringens levels remained unaffected by treatment throughout the digestion process (5.3 ± 0.2 log10 CFU g-TS−1)

    Understanding How Inequality in the Distribution of Income Affects Health

    Research on the determinants of health has almost exclusively focused on the individual but it seems clear we cannot understand or improve patterns of population health without engaging structural determinants at the societal level. This article traces the development of research on income distribution and health to the most recent epidemiologic studies from the USA that show how income inequality is related to age-adjusted mortality within the 50 States. (r 520.62, p 5 0.0001) even after accounting for absolute levels of income. We discuss potential material, psychological, social and behavioral pathways through which income distribution might be linked to health status.
