    "You're doing great. Keep doing what you're doing": socially supportive communication during first-generation college students' socialization

    The experiences of first-generation college students (FGCS) are marked by high levels of stress and uncertainty as they navigate the transition to college. This study uses the organizational assimilation model to explore FGCS’ transition to college by temporally analyzing multiple sources and types of socially supportive communication found in interviews with 28 FGCS in their first semester at a four-year university. Findings suggest that during anticipatory socialization, FGCS primarily engaged in informational and instrumental social support interactions; in the encounter phase of socialization, FGCS (while still engaging in informational and instrumental support interactions) also engaged in appraisal and emotional support interactions. Findings also illuminate the ways in which FGCS embodied the role of pioneers, even early in the socialization process, suggesting important implications for their role not only as receivers of social support, but as agents of social support

    Invasive mould infections: a multi-disciplinary update

    Systemic fungal infections remain a significant cause of mortality in neutropenic and immunocompromised patients, despite advances in their diagnosis and treatment. The incidence of such infections is rising due to the use of intensive chemotherapy regimens in patients with solid tumours or haematological cancers, the increasing numbers of allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplants, and the use of potent immunosuppressive therapy in patients with autoimmune disorders. In addition, the epidemiology of systemic fungal infections is changing, with atypical species such as Aspergillus terreus and zygomycetes becoming more common. Treatment has traditionally focused on empirical therapy, but targeted pre-emptive therapy in high-risk patients and prophylactic antifungal treatment are increasingly being adopted. New treatments, including lipid formulations of amphotericin B, second-generation broad-spectrum azoles, and echinocandins, offer effective antifungal activity with improved tolerability compared with older agents; the potential impact of these treatments is reflected in their inclusion in current treatment and prophylaxis guidelines. New treatment strategies, such as aerosolized lipid formulations of amphotericin B, may also reduce the burden of mortality associated with systemic fungal infections.     AN ANALYSIS OF SIZE, WEIGHT AND POWER (SWAP) FOR EMP SHIELDING OF THE RAAD SYSTEM

    In 2019, the U.S. Army’s Future Study Program designed and led the Unified Quest Multinational Seminar Wargame. This wargame examined U.S. forces, partners, and allies’ interoperability requirements to defeat a near-peer threat in a future operational environment. As part of the seminar wargame, Army forces executed a critical air assault operation in adversary-controlled terrain to support a river crossing. This task covers multiple aspects of operational planning and coordination for an assault operation as outlined in AFC Pamphlet 71 20-1. An air assault execution revealed the challenges of performing a complex forcible entry operation in a contested, anti-access/aerial denial (A2/AD) environment. Even with future aircraft, the air assault operation was vulnerable to enemy air defense capabilities. Landing zone restrictions reduce the number of areas the multinational forces could conduct air assault operations, providing a marked advantage to near-peer adversaries in planning likely counterattack operations and increasing the risk to forces. Through a combination of integrated air defense systems (IADS), indirect fires, direct fires, and reserve formations specifically tasked with contesting air assault operations, threat forces are expected to contest the air assault force during insertion.     The Impact Of External Loads Carried By Police Officers On Vertical Jump Performance

    International Journal of Exercise Science 13(6): 1179-1189, 2020. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that external loads have on vertical jump height and peak anaerobic power output (PAPw) of police officers during a vertical jump (VJ) test. Retrospective data of 47 (mean age 38.79 ± 7.97 years) police officers from a US Law Enforcement Agency (LEA) were used for analysis. VJ heights and body mass were used in the Sayers Peak Power Equation to calculate PAPw. Power-to-weight (P:W) ratios were then calculated by dividing PAPw by the officer’s body mass. VJ height significantly (p \u3c .001) decreased with load (unloaded = 49.49 ± 8.46 cm: loaded = 43.62 ± 7.68 cm). A Pearson’s correlation showed a significant (p \u3c .01) low-moderate (r = .387) relationship between absolute load (9.57 ± .94 kg) and change in PAPw, and a significant (p \u3c .01) strong (r = .794) correlation between relative load and changes in P:W. This study supports previous research that suggests that occupational load carriage has a negative impact on VJ performance in police officers and may influence job performance, and that training programs may mitigate these negative effects
