Physically-based image editing on mobile devices
The increasing processing power of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, along with the touch and gesture-based user interaction they provide, make them very interesting platforms for exploring brand-new image editing tools with natural interfaces. We present two different applications that rely heavily on fluid dynamics solvers for simulating image formation. The first one allows the user to add liquid to a virtual lens. Then refraction of light through the modified optical system is calculated, obtaining interesting creative distortions from the source image. The second tool simulates the wet plate collodion process, the first mainstream photographic technique, very popular on the 19th century. In this application, the user starts mixing the chemicals for the collodion film, which is created by spreading the liquid over a plate. This plate is then exposed and developed for obtaining an accurate depiction of the final image. All the calculations are based on real measured data, ensuring a close match with the real process. These example applications make full use of the available resources, providing instant feedback for an organic and engaging user experience
âAn ethnographic seductionâ: how qualitative research and Agent-based models can benefit each other
We provide a general analytical framework for empirically informed agent-based simulations. This methodology provides present-day agent-based models with a sound and proper insight as to the behavior of social agents â an insight that statistical data often fall short of providing at least at a micro level and for hidden and sensitive populations. In the other direction, simulations can provide qualitative researchers in sociology, anthropology and other fields with valuable tools for: (a) testing the consistency and pushing the boundaries, of specific theoretical frameworks; (b) replicating and generalizing results; (c) providing a platform for cross-disciplinary validation of results
Modelling of Multi-Agent Systems: Experiences with Membrane Computing and Future Challenges
Formal modelling of Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) is a challenging task due to
high complexity, interaction, parallelism and continuous change of roles and
organisation between agents. In this paper we record our research experience on
formal modelling of MAS. We review our research throughout the last decade, by
describing the problems we have encountered and the decisions we have made
towards resolving them and providing solutions. Much of this work involved
membrane computing and classes of P Systems, such as Tissue and Population P
Systems, targeted to the modelling of MAS whose dynamic structure is a
prominent characteristic. More particularly, social insects (such as colonies
of ants, bees, etc.), biology inspired swarms and systems with emergent
behaviour are indicative examples for which we developed formal MAS models.
Here, we aim to review our work and disseminate our findings to fellow
researchers who might face similar challenges and, furthermore, to discuss
important issues for advancing research on the application of membrane

Overestimating Resource Value and Its Effects on Fighting Decisions
Much work in behavioral ecology has shown that animals fight over resources such as food, and that they make strategic decisions about when to engage in such fights. Here, we examine the evolution of one, heretofore unexamined, component of that strategic decision about whether to fight for a resource. We present the results of a computer simulation that examined the evolution of over- or underestimating the value of a resource (food) as a function of an individual's current hunger level. In our model, animals fought for food when they perceived their current food level to be below the mean for the environment. We considered seven strategies for estimating food value: 1) always underestimate food value, 2) always overestimate food value, 3) never over- or underestimate food value, 4) overestimate food value when hungry, 5) underestimate food value when hungry, 6) overestimate food value when relatively satiated, and 7) underestimate food value when relatively satiated. We first competed all seven strategies against each other when they began at approximately equal frequencies. In such a competition, two strategiesââalways overestimate food value,â and âoverestimate food value when hungryââwere very successful. We next competed each of these strategies against the default strategy of ânever over- or underestimate,â when the default strategy was set at 99% of the population. Again, the strategies of âalways overestimate food valueâ and âoverestimate food value when hungryâ fared well. Our results suggest that overestimating food value when deciding whether to fight should be favored by natural selection
Gridded and direct Epoch of Reionisation bispectrum estimates using the Murchison Widefield Array
We apply two methods to estimate the 21~cm bispectrum from data taken within
the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) project of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA).
Using data acquired with the Phase II compact array allows a direct bispectrum
estimate to be undertaken on the multiple redundantly-spaced triangles of
antenna tiles, as well as an estimate based on data gridded to the -plane.
The direct and gridded bispectrum estimators are applied to 21 hours of
high-band (167--197~MHz; =6.2--7.5) data from the 2016 and 2017 observing
seasons. Analytic predictions for the bispectrum bias and variance for point
source foregrounds are derived. We compare the output of these approaches, the
foreground contribution to the signal, and future prospects for measuring the
bispectra with redundant and non-redundant arrays. We find that some triangle
configurations yield bispectrum estimates that are consistent with the expected
noise level after 10 hours, while equilateral configurations are strongly
foreground-dominated. Careful choice of triangle configurations may be made to
reduce foreground bias that hinders power spectrum estimators, and the 21~cm
bispectrum may be accessible in less time than the 21~cm power spectrum for
some wave modes, with detections in hundreds of hours.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

Access to post-compulsory education and training: economic, sociological and political determinants and remaining research gaps
This paper presents a review and assessment of existing theoretical accounts to explain differentials in access to education and training in advanced economies. These theories tend to focus on the analysis of the influence of a set of economic, sociological and political variables on access to education. Existing theories are criticized on two grounds. Firstly, they seldom take into consideration the crucial role of politicalâinstitutional factors, and in particular, welfare statesâ actions through direct investment and regulation in shaping access levels. Secondly, they focus narrowly on the analysis of different stages of education and training, and this does not reflect the current policy emphasis on lifelong learning. The paper concludes with an outline of a future research agenda to address these gaps, and also calls for a more rigorous analysis of the weight of the different factors affecting access
Bridging Alone: Religious Conservatism, Marital Homogamy, and Voluntary Association Membership
This study characterizes social insularity of religiously conservative American married couples by examining patterns of voluntary associationmembership. Constructing a dataset of 3938 marital dyads from the second wave of the National Survey of Families and Households, the author investigates whether conservative religious homogamy encourages membership in religious voluntary groups and discourages membership in secular voluntary groups. Results indicate that couplesâ shared affiliation with conservative denominations, paired with beliefs in biblical authority and inerrancy, increases the likelihood of religious group membership for husbands and wives and reduces the likelihood of secular group membership for wives, but not for husbands. The social insularity of conservative religious groups appears to be reinforced by homogamyâparticularly by wives who share faith with husbands
