Joint source-channel coding for a quantum multiple access channel
Suppose that two senders each obtain one share of the output of a classical,
bivariate, correlated information source. They would like to transmit the
correlated source to a receiver using a quantum multiple access channel. In
prior work, Cover, El Gamal, and Salehi provided a combined source-channel
coding strategy for a classical multiple access channel which outperforms the
simpler "separation" strategy where separate codebooks are used for the source
coding and the channel coding tasks. In the present paper, we prove that a
coding strategy similar to the Cover-El Gamal-Salehi strategy and a
corresponding quantum simultaneous decoder allow for the reliable transmission
of a source over a quantum multiple access channel, as long as a set of
information inequalities involving the Holevo quantity hold.Comment: 21 pages, v2: minor changes, accepted into Journal of Physics
Decision-making in façade selection for multi-storey buildings
The conference paper can be viewed at: http://www.arcom.ac.uk/-docs/proceedings/ar2012-0357-0367_Garmston_Pan_de%20Wilde.pdfThe design and construction of multi-storey buildings faces a multitude of demands such as aesthetics, cost, energy efficiency, and occupier comfort; with façades on both new and re-used buildings playing a key role in helping to meet these demands. The process of façade selection is aided by a plethora of decision-making tools, yet façade decisions are often largely guided by cost and aesthetics. Poorly specified façades can potentially expose developers, owners and occupiers of multi-storey buildings to risks such as poor thermal comfort, glare, and increased operational costs. The aim of this paper is to explore the current state of façade decision-making, with the objectives of discovering who is making the decisions and when, and what problems are perceived and what potential solutions might exist. Literature pertaining to façades, multi-storey buildings and façade decision-making is reviewed. Experience of façade decision-making in today’s construction industry in the UK is collected via semi-structured interviews with construction professionals. The findings show architects as leading the initial façade decisions, with clients and planners making the final decisions. Very few decision-making tools were revealed as being used: namely whole life cost analysis, life cycle cost analysis and simulation. Further research is proposed to define the roles participating in façade decision-making for multi-storey buildings
Renyi generalizations of the conditional quantum mutual information
The conditional quantum mutual information of a tripartite state
is an information quantity which lies at the center of many
problems in quantum information theory. Three of its main properties are that
it is non-negative for any tripartite state, that it decreases under local
operations applied to systems and , and that it obeys the duality
relation for a four-party pure state on systems . The
conditional mutual information also underlies the squashed entanglement, an
entanglement measure that satisfies all of the axioms desired for an
entanglement measure. As such, it has been an open question to find R\'enyi
generalizations of the conditional mutual information, that would allow for a
deeper understanding of the original quantity and find applications beyond the
traditional memoryless setting of quantum information theory. The present paper
addresses this question, by defining different -R\'enyi generalizations
of the conditional mutual information, some of which we can
prove converge to the conditional mutual information in the limit
. Furthermore, we prove that many of these generalizations
satisfy non-negativity, duality, and monotonicity with respect to local
operations on one of the systems or (with it being left as an open
question to prove that monotoniticity holds with respect to local operations on
both systems). The quantities defined here should find applications in quantum
information theory and perhaps even in other areas of physics, but we leave
this for future work. We also state a conjecture regarding the monotonicity of
the R\'enyi conditional mutual informations defined here with respect to the
R\'enyi parameter . We prove that this conjecture is true in some
special cases and when is in a neighborhood of one.Comment: v6: 53 pages, final published versio
Multi-storey building retrofit with a focus on the façade selection process: A UK commercial office case study
Fulltext in: http://www.arcom.ac.uk/-docs/proceedings/ar2013-0081-0090_Garmston_Fox_Pan_de%20Wilde.pdfPoorly-insulated existing buildings contribute significantly to the energy use of the built environment. In the UK, the existing building stock is replaced at a rate of less than 2% a year; thus, many of today’s buildings will still be in use in 2060. Retrofitting aged buildings can significantly reduce their energy use. This paper analyses the selection process and success factors in retrofit façade decision-making. Literature relating to building retrofit and façade selection is reviewed. A case study is conducted on a five-storey 1970s UK commercial office building, retrofitted in 2011. Data is collected via in-depth interviews with key project decision-makers, a documentary evidence review, and thermography of the completed retrofitted façade. The façade evolution is mapped according to seven identified project stages and the RIBA Plan of Work 2007. The retrofit satisfied the client’s aesthetic needs, while delivering an 85% reduction in the ’wall’ U-value and a ’B’ rated Energy Performance Certificate. Value engineering (VE) greatly influenced the façade selection, with less expensive alternatives replacing original elements of the façade design. The façade’s thermal success is linked to the VE focusing on façade elements covering only a small extent of the building. Façade success factors key to attracting tenants (lower running costs and aesthetics) may apply to commercial buildings in general. Thermography aided in assessing the retrofitted thermal envelope, but to act as a tool to aid retrofit façade selection, it should ideally involve a ’before’ and ’after’ survey
Highly ordered CdS nanoparticle arrays on silicon substrates and photoluminescence properties
Highly ordered cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanoparticle (NP) arrays were fabricated on silicon (Si) substrates using ultrathin alumina membranes as evaporation masks. The CdS NPs are polycrystalline and are composed of ultrasmall closely packed nanocrystallites. These crystallites increase in size as the duration of the CdS evaporation process increases. When the thickness of the NPs changes from about 10 to 50 nm, the size of the crystallites increases from about 5–14 to 20–40 nm. Photoluminescence measurements on the CdS NP arrays show a strong emission spectrum with two subbands that are attributed to band-edge and surface-defect emissions. The peak position and width of the band-edge emission band are closely related to the size of the crystallites in the CdS NPs.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87842/2/103106_1.pd
Generalized Weyl-Wigner map and Vey quantum mechanics
The Weyl-Wigner map yields the entire structure of Moyal quantum mechanics
directly from the standard operator formulation. The covariant generalization
of Moyal theory, also known as Vey quantum mechanics, was presented in the
literature many years ago. However, a derivation of the formalism directly from
standard operator quantum mechanics, clarifying the relation between the two
formulations is still missing. In this paper we present a covariant
generalization of the Weyl order prescription and of the Weyl-Wigner map and
use them to derive Vey quantum mechanics directly from the standard operator
formulation. The procedure displays some interesting features: it yields all
the key ingredients and provides a more straightforward interpretation of the
Vey theory including a direct implementation of unitary operator
transformations as phase space coordinate transformations in the Vey idiom.
These features are illustrated through a simple example.Comment: 15 pages, LaTe
Quantum Convolutional Coding with Shared Entanglement: General Structure
We present a general theory of entanglement-assisted quantum convolutional
coding. The codes have a convolutional or memory structure, they assume that
the sender and receiver share noiseless entanglement prior to quantum
communication, and they are not restricted to possess the
Calderbank-Shor-Steane structure as in previous work. We provide two
significant advances for quantum convolutional coding theory. We first show how
to "expand" a given set of quantum convolutional generators. This expansion
step acts as a preprocessor for a polynomial symplectic Gram-Schmidt
orthogonalization procedure that simplifies the commutation relations of the
expanded generators to be the same as those of entangled Bell states (ebits)
and ancilla qubits. The above two steps produce a set of generators with
equivalent error-correcting properties to those of the original generators. We
then demonstrate how to perform online encoding and decoding for a stream of
information qubits, halves of ebits, and ancilla qubits. The upshot of our
theory is that the quantum code designer can engineer quantum convolutional
codes with desirable error-correcting properties without having to worry about
the commutation relations of these generators.Comment: 23 pages, replaced with final published versio
Time dependent transformations in deformation quantization
We study the action of time dependent canonical and coordinate
transformations in phase space quantum mechanics. We extend the covariant
formulation of the theory by providing a formalism that is fully invariant
under both standard and time dependent coordinate transformations. This result
considerably enlarges the set of possible phase space representations of
quantum mechanics and makes it possible to construct a causal representation
for the distributional sector of Wigner quantum mechanics.Comment: 16 pages, to appear in the J. Math. Phy
