    We discuss a relationship between certain one-dimensional quantum spin chains and anyon chains. In particular we show how the XXZ Heisenberg chain is realised as a D3D_{3} (alternately su(2)4su(2)_{4}) anyon model. We find the difference between the models lie primarily in choice of boundary condition.Comment: 13 page

    Experimental studies on a combined pyrolysis/staged condensation/hydrotreatment approach to obtain biofuels and biobased chemicals

    Fast pyrolysis is an efficient technology to convert lignocellulosic biomass to a liquid product. However, the high contents of oxygenated compounds and water hinder the direct utilization of pyrolysis oils. Here, we report an upgrading concept to obtain liquid products with improved product properties and enriched in valuable low molecular weight chemicals and particularly alkylphenols. It entails two steps, viz. i) pyrolysis with in-situ staged condensation at multiple kg scale followed by ii) a catalytic hydrotreatment of selected fractions using a Ru/C catalyst. Of all pyrolysis oil fractions after staged condensation, the product collected in a condenser equipped with an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) at 120 °C was identified as the most attractive for hydrotreatment when considering product yields and composition. The best hydrotreatment results (Ru/C, 350 °C, 100 bar H2, 4 h) were achieved using beechwood and walnut shells as feedstock, resulting in a high oil yield (about 64 wt% based on pyrolysis oil fraction intake) with a higher heating value of about 37 MJ/kg and enriched in alkylphenols (about 16 wt%). Overall, it was shown that the type of biomass (beech sawdust, walnut granulates, and pine/spruce sawdust) has a limited impact on liquid and alkylphenols yields which implies feedstock flexibility of this integrated concept

    Single-cell proteomics defines the cellular heterogeneity of localized prostate cancer

    Localized prostate cancer exhibits multiple genomic alterations and heterogeneity at the proteomic level. Single-cell technologies capture important cell-to-cell variability responsible for heterogeneity in biomarker expression that may be overlooked when molecular alterations are based on bulk tissue samples. This study aims to identify prognostic biomarkers and describe the heterogeneity of prostate cancer and the associated microenvironment by simultaneously quantifying 36 proteins using single-cell mass cytometry analysis of over 1.6 million cells from 58 men with localized prostate cancer. We perform this task, using a high-dimensional clustering pipeline named Franken to describe subpopulations of immune, stromal, and prostate cells, including changes occurring in tumor tissues and high-grade disease that provide insights into the coordinated progression of prostate cancer. Our results further indicate that men with localized disease already harbor rare subpopulations that typically occur in castration-resistant and metastatic disease

    Hydrogen bonding versus halogen bonding: Spectroscopic investigation of gas-phase complexes involving bromide and chloromethanes

    Hydrogen bonding and halogen bonding are important non-covalent interactions that are known to occur in large molecular systems, such as in proteins and crystal structures. Although these interactions are important on a large scale, studying hydrogen and halogen bonding in small, gas-phase chemical species allows for the binding strengths to be determined and compared at a fundamental level. In this study, anion photoelectron spectra are presented for the gas-phase complexes involving bromide and the four chloromethanes, CH3Cl, CH2Cl2, CHCl3, and CCl4. The stabilisation energy and electron binding energy associated with each complex are determined experimentally, and the spectra are rationalised by high-level CCSD(T) calculations to determine the non-covalent interactions binding the complexes. These calculations involve nucleophilic bromide and electrophilic bromine interactions with chloromethanes, where the binding motifs, dissociation energies and vertical detachment energies are compared in terms of hydrogen bonding and halogen bonding

    p53 suppresses type II endometrial carcinomas in mice and governs endometrial tumour aggressiveness in humans

    Type II endometrial carcinomas are a highly aggressive group of tumour subtypes that are frequently associated with inactivation of the TP53 tumour suppressor gene. We show that mice with endometrium-specific deletion of Trp53 initially exhibited histological changes that are identical to known precursor lesions of type II endometrial carcinomas in humans and later developed carcinomas representing all type II subtypes. The mTORC1 signalling pathway was frequently activated in these precursor lesions and tumours, suggesting a genetic cooperation between this pathway and Trp53 deficiency in tumour initiation. Consistent with this idea, analyses of 521 human endometrial carcinomas identified frequent mTORC1 pathway activation in type I as well as type II endometrial carcinoma subtypes. mTORC1 pathway activation and p53 expression or mutation status each independently predicted poor patient survival. We suggest that molecular alterations in p53 and the mTORC1 pathway play different roles in the initiation of the different endometrial cancer subtypes, but that combined p53 inactivation and mTORC1 pathway activation are unifying pathogenic features among histologically diverse subtypes of late stage aggressive endometrial tumours

In this scheme shares can be used for the reconstruction of multiple secrets, sharehold-ers can dynamically join or leave without distributing new shares to the existing shareholders, and shares can be individually veried during both share distribution and secret recovery.
