Continuum Moment Equations on the Lattice
An analysis is given as to why one can not directly evaluate continuum moment
equations, i.e., equations involving powers of the position variable times
charge, current, or energy/momentum operators, on the lattice. I examine two
cases: a three point function evaluation of the nucleon magnetic moment and a
four point function (charge overlap) evaluation of the pseudoscalar charge
radius.Comment: 9 pages; 1 ps figur
Sacred Vows, Public Purposes: Religion, the Marriage Movement and Marriage Policy
Focuses on the ways in which public policy is promoting marriage, church-state cooperation on behalf of marriage, and the likelihood that these public policies will meet with success. Looks at the central moral issues raised by marriage policy
Reforming the Defined-Benefit Pension System
Defined-benefit pensions typically expose workers to a form of financial risk that they are ill positioned to bear and unable to hedge. If workers understand that risk, they will offer employers a lower “price” (in the form of salary concessions) than the capital markets would offer for the same cash flow. The resulting financial inefficiency reduces the value of the firm sponsoring the pension plan. The paper identifies reforms that would essentially eliminate the financial risk borne by workers and hence the financial inefficiency inherent in risky pensions. It would also essentially eliminate the substantial financial exposure currently borne by taxpayers. The key reform elements are tighter rules governing funding and portfolio investment, market-oriented pricing of the insurance offered by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, and improved disclosure of information related to pension plans in firms’ public financial statements, in the federal budget, and in statements provided to workers.macroeconomics, defined-benefit pension, pension system, financial risk
FOCUSED ON THEIR FAMILIES: Religion, Parenting, & Child Well-being
In recent years, scholars have drawn attention to religious commitments to patriarchy and parental authority to argue that religion—especially conservative Protestantism—fosters an authoritarian approach to parenting. Indeed, using data from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), this study does find that religious attendance and theological conservatism are associated with higher levels of corporal punishment among parents—potentially an indicator of authoritarian parenting. But religious attendance and theological conservatism are also associated with lower levels of parental yelling and with higher levels of praising and hugging among parents, which are indicators of an authoritative style of parenting. Moreover, data from the Survey of Adults and Youth (SAY) indicate that religious attendance and orthodoxy are generally associated with greater parental investments in childrearing, more intergenerational closure, and more social control. In other words, conservative Protestants, Orthodox Jews, traditional Catholics, and other parents who regularly attend religious services are more likely than other parents to adopt an authoritative style of parenting that is beneficial to children.
Total ozone trend significance from space time variability of daily Dobson data
Estimates of standard errors of total ozone time and area means, as derived from ozone's natural temporal and spatial variability and autocorrelation in middle latitudes determined from daily Dobson data are presented. Assessing the significance of apparent total ozone trends is equivalent to assessing the standard error of the means. Standard errors of time averages depend on the temporal variability and correlation of the averaged parameter. Trend detectability is discussed, both for the present network and for satellite measurements
Modelling direction solidification
The overall objective of this program is to develop an improved understanding of some phenomena of importance to directional solidification. The aim of this research is also to help predict differences in behavior between solidification on Earth and solidification in space. In this report, the validity of the Burton-Primslichter equation is explored. The influence of operating variables on grain and twin generation and propagation in single crystals of In sub (x) Ga sub (1-x) Sb is also investigated
Strange matrix elements of the nucleon
Results for the disconnected contributions to matrix elements of the vector
current and scalar density have been obtained for the nucleon from the Wilson
action at beta=6 using a stochastic estimator technique and 2000 quenched
configurations. Various methods for analysis are employed and chiral
extrapolations are discussed.Comment: Lattice2002(matrixel), 3 pages, 3 figure
Bonding Alone: Familism, Religion, and Secular Civic Participation
This study examines the influence of familism, religion, and their interaction on participation in secular voluntary associations. We develop an insularity theory to explain how familism and religion encourage Americans to avoid secular civic participation. Using data from the first wave of the National Survey of Families and Households, this study finds that familism reduces participation in secular organizations. Moreover, religion moderates the effect of familism: specifically, religious involvement tends to increase the negative effect of familism on secular civic participation. Although religious involvement in and of itself fosters secular civic participation, strong familism tends to dampen positive impacts of religious involvement. For familistic individuals, religious congregations appear to reinforce their insularity within their immediate social circle and family
