On pricing kernels, information and risk
We discuss the finding that cross-sectional characteristic based models have
yielded portfolios with higher excess monthly returns but lower risk than their
arbitrage pricing theory counterparts in an analysis of equity returns of
stocks listed on the JSE. Under the assumption of general no-arbitrage
conditions, we argue that evidence in favour of characteristic based pricing
implies that information is more likely assimilated by means of nonlinear
pricing kernels for the markets considered.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Computation of turbulent boundary layers on curved surfaces, 1 June 1975 - 31 January 1976
An accurate method was developed for predicting effects of streamline curvature and coordinate system rotation on turbulent boundary layers. A new two-equation model of turbulence was developed which serves as the basis of the study. In developing the new model, physical reasoning is combined with singular perturbation methods to develop a rational, physically-based set of equations which are, on the one hand, as accurate as mixing-length theory for equilibrium boundary layers and, on the other hand, suitable for computing effects of curvature and rotation. The equations are solved numerically for several boundary layer flows over plane and curved surfaces. For incompressible boundary layers, results of the computations are generally within 10% of corresponding experimental data. Somewhat larger discrepancies are noted for compressible applications
Transonic transport study: Economics
An economic analysis was performed to evaluate the impact of advanced materials, increased aerodynamic and structural efficiencies, and cruise speed on advanced transport aircraft designed for cruise Mach numbers of .90, .98, and 1.15. A detailed weight statement was generated by an aircraft synthesis computer program called TRANSYN-TST; these weights were used to estimate the cost to develop and manufacture a fleet of aircraft of each configuration. The direct and indirect operating costs were estimated for each aircraft, and an average return on investment was calculated for various operating conditions. There was very little difference between the operating economics of the aircraft designed for Mach numbers .90 and .98. The Mach number 1.15 aircraft was economically marginal in comparison but showed significant improvements with the application of carbon/epoxy structural material. However, the Mach .90 and Mach .98 aircraft are the most economically attractive vehicles in the study
De-gendering Engagement?: Gender Mainstreaming, Women's Movements and the Canadian Federal State
This article assesses the impact of gender mainstreaming on Canadian women's movements' relationship to the federal state. The paper argues that while gender mainstreaming creates new spaces for integrating gender analysis into policymaking, it also contributes to the erosion of feminist organizations as legitimate participants in the policy process.
Electric Polarizability of Neutral Hadrons from Lattice QCD
By simulating a uniform electric field on a lattice and measuring the change
in the rest mass, we calculate the electric polarizability of neutral mesons
and baryons using the methods of quenched lattice QCD. Specifically, we measure
the electric polarizability coefficient from the quadratic response to the
electric field for 10 particles: the vector mesons and ; the
octet baryons n, , , , and ;
and the decouplet baryons , , and .
Independent calculations using two fermion actions were done for consistency
and comparison purposes. One calculation uses Wilson fermions with a lattice
spacing of fm. The other uses tadpole improved L\"usher-Weiss gauge
fields and clover quark action with a lattice spacing fm. Our results
for neutron electric polarizability are compared to experiment.Comment: 25 pages, 20 figure
Turbulence Model Implementation and Verification in the SENSEI CFD Code
This paper outlines the implementation and verification of the negative Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model into the SENSEI CFD code. The SA-neg turbulence model is implemented in a flexible, object-oriented framework where additional turbulence models can be easily added. In addition to outlining the new turbulence modeling framework in SENSEI, an overview of the other general improvements to SENSEI is provided. The results for four 2D test cases are compared to results from CFL3D and FUN3D to verify that the turbulence models are implemented properly. Several differences in the results from SENSEI, CFL3D, and FUN3D are identified and are attributed to differences in the implementation and discretization order of the boundary conditions as well as the order of discretization of the turbulence model. When a solid surface is located near or intersects an inflow or outflow boundary, higher order boundary conditions should be used to limit their effect on the forces on the surface. When the turbulence equations are discretized using second order spatial accuracy, the edge of the eddy viscosity profile seems to be sharper than when a first order discretization is used. However, the discretization order of the turbulence equation does not have a significant impact on output quantities of interest, such as pressure and viscous drag, for the cases studied
Magnetic polarizability of hadrons from lattice QCD in the background field method
We present a calculation of hadron magnetic polarizability using the
techniques of lattice QCD. This is carried out by introducing a uniform
external magnetic field on the lattice and measuring the quadratic part of a
hadron's mass shift. The calculation is performed on a lattice with
standard Wilson actions at beta=6.0 (spacing fm) and pion mass down to
about 500 MeV. Results are obtained for 30 particles covering the entire baryon
octet (, , , , , , ,
) and decuplet (, , , ,
, , , , ,
), plus selected mesons (, , , , ,
, , , , , , ). The
results are compared with available values from experiments and other
theoretical calculations.Comment: 30 pages, 23 figures, 5 table
Geographical Analysis of US Green Sector Industry Concentration
This paper analyzes the geographic distribution of âgreen energyâ sector clustering in the lower 48 United States using recent developments in industry concentration analysis. Evidence suggests that the ten green energy subsectors and the aggregate of the firms comprising the green energy sector are regionally concentrated. Positive changes in industry concentration from 2002 to 2006 tended to be greatest in non-metropolitan counties, suggesting comparative advantage with respect to site location for the composite of firms making up these sectors.Agglomeration, Location Quotient, Renewable Energy, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Industrial Organization, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
Summary of the recent short-haul systems studies
The results of several NASA sponsored high density short haul air transportation systems studies are reported as well as analyzed. Included are the total STOL systems analysis approach, a companion STOL composites study conducted in conjunction with STOL systems studies, a STOL economic assessment study, an evaluation of STOL aircraft with and without externally blown flaps, an alternative STOL systems for the San Francisco Bay Area, and the quiet, clean experimental engine studies. Assumptions and results of these studies are summarized, their differences, analyzed, and the results compared with those in-house analyses performed by the Systems Studies Division of the NASA-Ames Research Center. Pertinent conclusions are developed and the more significant technology needs for the evaluation of a viable short haul transportation system are identified
