    Interfacial Structural Changes and Singularities in Non-Planar Geometries

    We consider phase coexistence and criticality in a thin-film Ising magnet with opposing surface fields and non-planar (corrugated) walls. We show that the loss of translational invariance has a strong and unexpected non-linear influence on the interface structure and phase diagram. We identify 4 non-thermodynamic singularities where there is a qualitative change in the interface shape. In addition, we establish that at the finite-size critical point, the singularity in the interface shape is characterized by two distint critical exponents in contrast to the planar case (which is characterised by one). Similar effects should be observed for prewetting at a corrugated substrate. Analogy is made with the behaviour of a non-linear forced oscillator showing chaotic dynamics.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Elasticity of semiflexible polymers in two dimensions

    We study theoretically the entropic elasticity of a semi-flexible polymer, such as DNA, confined to two dimensions. Using the worm-like-chain model we obtain an exact analytical expression for the partition function of the polymer pulled at one end with a constant force. The force-extension relation for the polymer is computed in the long chain limit in terms of Mathieu characteristic functions. We also present applications to the interaction between a semi-flexible polymer and a nematic field, and derive the nematic order parameter and average extension of the polymer in a strong field.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

    Phase-space structure of two-dimensional excitable localized structures

    In this work we characterize in detail the bifurcation leading to an excitable regime mediated by localized structures in a dissipative nonlinear Kerr cavity with a homogeneous pump. Here we show how the route can be understood through a planar dynamical system in which a limit cycle becomes the homoclinic orbit of a saddle point (saddle-loop bifurcation). The whole picture is unveiled, and the mechanism by which this reduction occurs from the full infinite-dimensional dynamical system is studied. Finally, it is shown that the bifurcation leads to an excitability regime, under the application of suitable perturbations. Excitability is an emergent property for this system, as it emerges from the spatial dependence since the system does not exhibit any excitable behavior locally.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

    Associations of Demographic Factors and Tobacco Use With Progesterone and Estradiol During Pregnancy

    Objective: To evaluate the association of biochemically validated prenatal tobacco use with serum progesterone and estradiol in the second trimester of pregnancy, controlling for demographic and personal factors. Study design: This secondary analysis of a multicenter longitudinal study included 114 women with singleton pregnancies. Multiple regression analysis assessed whether prenatal tobacco use was related to hormone levels during the second trimester, controlling for covariates (age, body mass index, and race or ethnicity, with gestational age added to subsequent models). Result: In the initial regressions, tobacco users had significantly lower progesterone level compared with nonsmokers (p = .037), while estradiol was unrelated to prenatal tobacco use. Women with greater body mass index also had significantly lower progesterone (p = .028), but body mass index was unrelated to estradiol. With gestational age as an additional covariate, prenatal tobacco use was no longer a significant predictor of progesterone, but both body mass index and gestational age were significant (F = 10.6, p \u3c .001, R2 = 0.35). For estradiol, the overall regression of estradiol on age, body mass index, and race or ethnicity was not significant (F = 1.2, p = .31). With gestational age added to the model, the overall model was significant (F = 7.2, p \u3c .001, R2 = 0.27). Conclusion: This study provides additional evidence that prenatal tobacco use may influence lower serum progesterone during the second trimester. This is of particular concern given the link between depressed progesterone activity and risk for preterm birth

    Exact theory of kinkable elastic polymers

    The importance of nonlinearities in material constitutive relations has long been appreciated in the continuum mechanics of macroscopic rods. Although the moment (torque) response to bending is almost universally linear for small deflection angles, many rod systems exhibit a high-curvature softening. The signature behavior of these rod systems is a kinking transition in which the bending is localized. Recent DNA cyclization experiments by Cloutier and Widom have offered evidence that the linear-elastic bending theory fails to describe the high-curvature mechanics of DNA. Motivated by this recent experimental work, we develop a simple and exact theory of the statistical mechanics of linear-elastic polymer chains that can undergo a kinking transition. We characterize the kinking behavior with a single parameter and show that the resulting theory reproduces both the low-curvature linear-elastic behavior which is already well described by the Wormlike Chain model, as well as the high-curvature softening observed in recent cyclization experiments.Comment: Revised for PRE. 40 pages, 12 figure

    A Memetic Analysis of a Phrase by Beethoven: Calvinian Perspectives on Similarity and Lexicon-Abstraction

    This article discusses some general issues arising from the study of similarity in music, both human-conducted and computer-aided, and then progresses to a consideration of similarity relationships between patterns in a phrase by Beethoven, from the first movement of the Piano Sonata in A flat major op. 110 (1821), and various potential memetic precursors. This analysis is followed by a consideration of how the kinds of similarity identified in the Beethoven phrase might be understood in psychological/conceptual and then neurobiological terms, the latter by means of William Calvinā€™s Hexagonal Cloning Theory. This theory offers a mechanism for the operation of David Copeā€™s concept of the lexicon, conceived here as a museme allele-class. I conclude by attempting to correlate and map the various spaces within which memetic replication occurs

    Comparison of Serum and Cervical Cytokine Levels Throughout Pregnancy Between Preterm and Term Births

    Objective To assess differences in cytokine levels in cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) and serum across trimesters between women with preterm births (PTBs) and full-term births. Study Design This multicenter study enrolled 302 women with a singleton gestation. CVF and serum cytokines, interleukin 1Ī± (IL-1Ī±), IL-1Ī², IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-Ī±, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8, were measured. Women with at least one cytokine assessment and noted PTB status in their medical record were retained in the study (Nā€‰=ā€‰272). Data were analyzed using mixed modeling (main effects of PTBs and time/trimester). Results For the CVF values of IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-Ī±, and CRP, and serum MMP-8, those who delivered preterm had significantly higher values than the full-term group regardless of trimester. For the serum values of IL-1Ī², IL-6, and TNF-Ī±, those delivering preterm had significantly lower values than those delivering full-term regardless of trimester. For IL-1Ī² in CVF, the cytokine was significantly higher in the PTB group for second and third trimesters only, relative to the full-term group. Conclusion For each CVF cytokine that differed by birth status, values were higher for PTB than term, averaged over trimester.
