    Effect of restoration of euthyroidism on visfatin concentrations and body composition in women

    Dysregulation of thyroid function has known impact on body metabolism, however, data regarding metabolic outcome after restoration of thyroid function is limited. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the effect of restoration of euthyroidism on serum visfatin, and its associations with insulin resistance and body composition. This is an observational study with consecutive enrollment. Forty-nine hyperthyroid (median age of 34 years) and 44 hypothyroid women (median age of 46 years) completed the study. Laboratory parameters and body composition analysis were assessed before and after the therapy. In the hyperthyroid group, visfatin concentrations increased (P \u3c 0.0001), while glucose concentrations decreased (P \u3c 0.0001). Total body mass and fat mass in the trunk and limbs significantly increased during the treatment. In the hypothyroid group, significant weight loss resulted from decrease of fat and muscle masses in trunk and limbs. Visfatin serum concentrations positively correlated with total fat mass (r = 0.19, P = 0.01) and insulin concentrations (r = 0.17, P = 0.018). In conclusion, restoration of thyroid function is not associated with beneficial changes in body composition, especially among hyperthyroid females

    Nutrients composition in fit snacks made from ostrich, beef and chicken dried meat

    The aim of the study was to compare three types of meat snacks made from ostrich, beef, and chicken meat in relation to their nutrients content including fat, fatty acids, heme iron, and peptides, like anserine and carnosine, from which human health may potentially benefit. Dry meat samples were produced, from one type of muscle, obtained from ostrich (m. ambiens), beef (m. semimembranosus), and broiler chicken meat (m. pectoralis major). The composition of dried ostrich, beef, and chicken meat, with and without spices was compared. We show that meat snacks made from ostrich, beef, and chicken meat were characterized by high concentration of nutrients including proteins, minerals (heme iron especially in ostrich, than in beef), biologically active peptides (carnosine-in beef, anserine-in ostrich then in chicken meat). The, beneficial to human health, n-3 fatty acids levels differed significantly between species. Moreover, ostrich jerky contained four times less fat as compared to beef and half of that in chicken. In conclusion we can say that dried ostrich, beef, and chicken meat could be a good source of nutritional components

    International audienceGold-containing compounds offer many applications in nanoscale materials science, and electron-beam methods are versatile for shaping nanostructures. In this study, we report the energy-selective fragmentation of chloro(dimethyl sulfide)gold(I) (ClAuS(CH3)2) induced by slow electrons. We observe the resonant formation of four fragment anions, namely [Cl]−, [S]−, [CH2S]−, and [ClAuH···SH]−, which are generated in the energy range of 0–9 eV. The predominant fragment anion is formed below 1 eV from the cleavage of a single Au–Cl bond to produce the [Cl]− anion. The resonant states and the energetics of the fragmentation are investigated by DFT methods. These findings may contribute to future strategies in the elaboration of specific nanomaterials or for selective chemistry using electron-beam techniques

    Lack of knowledge about clinical symptoms and celiac disease diagnosis may lead to a significantdelay in diagnosis. There was a definite progress in the diagnostic possibilities of celiacdisease. Four gastroenterological organizations such as: the American College of Gastroenterology(ACG), the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, theWorld Gastroenterological Association and The British Society of Gastroenterology propose the diagnosis of visceral disease based on halotyping, small intestine biopsy and serum antibodydetermination. In addition, ESPGHAN (European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatologyand Nutrition, World Gastroenterological Association) suggests that in young patientsa non-invasive diagnostic method may be used, a tTG IgA titer , which is 10 times above theupper limit of normal, endomysial antibodies, and the HLA DQ2 or DQ8 halotype. Accordingto the Oslo definition, the following classification should be used: classical, non-classical,symptomatic, asymptomatic, potential, recurrent. Celiac disease may manifest itself in specificclinical symptoms such as: diarrhea, flatulence, deficiency or weight loss, malabsorption leadingto deficiencies of vitamins and micronutrients, for example anemia, lactose intolerance,and non-specific disease, e.g. infertility, irregular monthly cycle, or problems with maintaininga pregnancy. It also happens that the disease is asymptomatic. The clinical picture of celiacdisease in the elderly (≥ 65) and younger (18–64) is ver y similar. The aim of the work is topresent the most impor tant information about epidemiology, diagnostics and symptoms ofceliac disease.Brak wiedzy na temat objawów klinicznych i diagnostyki celiakii może prowadzić do istotnego opóźnienia rozpoznania. Zaobserwowano zdecydowany progres w możliwościach diagnostycznych choroby trzewnej. Cztery organizacje gastroenterologiczne: American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, World Gastroenterological Association oraz The British Society of Gastroenterology proponują diagnostykę choroby trzewnej opartą na halotypowaniu, biopsji jelita cienkiego oraz oznaczeniu przeciwciał w surowicy krwi. Dodatkowo ESPGHAN (Europejskie Towarzystwo Gastroenterologii, Hepatologiii Żywienia Dzieci) sugeruje, iż u pacjentów małoletnich można zastosować nieinwazyjną metodę diagnostyczną, oznaczyć miano tTGIgA, które jest 10-krotnie powyżej górnej granicy normy, występują przeciwciała endomyzjalne oraz halotyp HLA (humanleukocyteantigens) DQ2 lub DQ8. Według definicji z Oslo należy stosować następujący podział choroby: klasyczna, nieklasyczna, objawowa, bezobjawowa, potencjalna, nawracająca. Choroba trzewna może się manifestować specyficznymi objawami klinicznymi, takimi jak: biegunka, wzdęcia, niedobór bądź utrata masy ciała, zaburzenia wchłaniania prowadzące do niedoborów witamin oraz mikroelementów np. niedokrwistość, nietolerancja laktozy, możliwy jest również niespecyficzny obraz choroby, na przykład niepłodność, nieregularny cykl miesięczny czy problemy z utrzymaniem ciąży. Zdarza się również, że choroba jest bezobjawowa. Obraz kliniczny choroby trzewnej u osób starszych (≥ 65. rż.) i młodszych (18–64 lat) jest bardzo podobny.     Robot-Assisted Electrode Insertion in Cochlear Implantation Controlled by Intraoperative Electrocochleography—A Pilot Study

    Robotics in otology has been developing in many directions for more than two decades. Current clinical trials focus on more accurate stapes surgery, minimally invasive access to the cochlea and less traumatic insertion of cochlear implant (CI) electrode arrays. In this study we evaluated the use of the RobOtol® (Collin, Bagneux, France) otologic robot to insert CI electrodes into the inner ear with intraoperative ECochG analysis. This prospective, pilot study included two adult patients implanted with Advanced Bionics (Westinghouse PI, CA, USA) cochlear implant, with HiFocus™ Mid-Scala electrode array. The standard surgical approach was used. For both subjects, who had residual hearing in the implanted ear, intraoperative and postoperative ECochG was performed with the AIMTM system. The surgeries were uneventful. A credible ECochG response was obtained after complete electrode insertion in both cases. Preoperative BC thresholds compared to intraoperative estimated ECochG thresholds and 2-day postoperative BC thresholds had similar values at frequencies where all thresholds were measurable. The results of the ECochG performed one month after the surgery showed that in both patients the hearing residues were preserved for the selected frequencies. The RobOtol® surgical robot allows for the correct, safe and gentle insertion of the cochlear implant electrode inside the cochlea. The use of electrocochleography measurements during robotic cochlear implantation offers an additional opportunity to evaluate and modify the electrode array insertion on an ongoing basis, which may contribute to the preservation of residual hearing

    Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Dissociative Electron Attachment to Metabolites Oxaloacetic and Citric Acids

    International audienceIn this contribution the dissociative electron attachment to metabolites found in aerobic organisms, namely oxaloacetic and citric acids, was studied both experimentally by means of a crossed-beam setup and theoretically through density functional theory calculations. Prominent negative ion resonances from both compounds are observed peaking below 0.5 eV resulting in intense formation of fragment anions associated with a decomposition of the carboxyl groups. In addition, resonances at higher energies (3–9 eV) are observed exclusively from the decomposition of the oxaloacetic acid. These fragments are generated with considerably smaller intensities. The striking findings of our calculations indicate the different mechanism by which the near 0 eV electron is trapped by the precursor molecule to form the transitory negative ion prior to dissociation. For the oxaloacetic acid, the transitory anion arises from the capture of the electron directly into some valence states, while, for the citric acid, dipole- or multipole-bound states mediate the transition into the valence states. What is also of high importance is that both compounds while undergoing DEA reactions generate highly reactive neutral species that can lead to severe cell damage in a biological environment

    Plant-Based Fish Analogs—A Review

    Recently, plant-based food has become important in the global food market. The increasing demand for plant-based food is a consequence of the increase in both environmental awareness and care for animal welfare as well as the changes in nutritional recommendations. Therefore, food producers are concentrating on fulfilling consumer needs by creating alternatives to animal-based products with comparable nutritional and sensory qualities but from plant-based sources. One promising trend is the production of plant-based fish. Thus, this work aimed to summarize the possibilities of creating plant-based fish analogs, including a review of alternatives to fish products currently available on the market and the possible use of the various ingredients to produce plant-based fish analogs like fillets, slices, as well as sticks, or burgers. Furthermore, the plant-based ingredients were characterized for potential use in fish analogs production. Additionally, the study includes technologies used for plant-based fish analogs production, e.g., texturization, 3D and 4D printing, electrospinning, etc. Furthermore, future perspectives were given considering the challenges and limitations in this range
