    Eine Analyse der Unterrichtsbedingungen von Krankenhausschulen an kinder- und jugendpsychiatrischen Einrichtungen läßt eine große Heterogenität sichtbar werden. Die Schulen an den großen Langzeiteinrichtungen sind Sonderschulen für Geistigbehinderte oder für Erziehungshilfe ähnlicher als denen an kleineren Therapieeinheiten. Letztere sind eindeutig als Schulen für Kranke zu klassifizieren. Die Diskussion zwischen Medizin und Pädagogik über die Erziehung und Bildung von Schülern in psychiatrischen Einrichtungen muß zukünftig formale und topologische Gegebenheiten stärker berücksichtigen. (DIPF/Orig.)An analysis of the conditions for teaching in hospital schools inside psychiatric institutions for children and adolescents reveals great heterogeneity. The schools in large long-term institutions are more like specific schools for the mentally retarded or child guidance schools than those in smaller therapeutic units. The latter are to be classified unmistakeably as hospital schools. In the future the discussion between medical men and pedagogues concerning the education of children in psychiatric institutions must more closely refer to formal and topological conditions than has hitherto been the case.     The innocent mosquito? The environmental ethics of mosquito eradicatio

    In any proposal for specicide, as represented by mosquito eradication, one must acknowledge that this involves a complex set of moral trade-offs. Taking it as given that the health burden of vector-borne diseases has to be reduced drastically, this chapter lays out the landscape of normative arguments that can be brought in the mosquito’s defence. These, in turn, should be involved in deliberations about whether such large-scale eradication practices can be morally justified. In favour of mosquito protection, several (but not exhaustive) kinds of arguments are presented based on individual mosquito’s moral standing, the value of each species, concerns about hubris and risks, and questions about preferable alternatives. At the same time, this chapter also inquires whether the conflict between humans and mosquitos can be framed as a matter of self-defence—attributing to humans a right to defend themselves. A morally important distinction here is that the mosquito is merely instrumentalized by the disease that it carries which is the real motive of self-defence, showing that mosquitos are innocent in several senses of the term. Taking all these different moral considerations seriously leaves us with an awareness that the eradication of these species cannot be treated lightl

    Import of apocytochrome c into the mitochondrial intermembrane space along a cytochrome c1 sorting pathway

    The question of whether cytochrome c could be functionally sorted to the mitochondrial intermembrane space along a "conservative sorting" pathway was investigated using a fusion protein termed pLc1-c. pLc1-c contains 3-fold targeting information, namely, the complete bipartite presequence of the cytochrome c1 precursor joined to the amino terminus of apocytochrome c. pLc1-c could be selectively imported into the intermembrane space either directly across the outer membrane along a cytochrome c import route or along a cytochrome c1 route via the matrix. Thus, apocytochrome c could be sorted along a conservative sorting pathway; however, following reexport from the matrix, apo-Lc1-c could not be converted to its holo counterpart. Despite the apparent similarity of structure and functional location of the heme lyases and similarity of the heme binding regions in their respective apoproteins, cytochrome c heme lyase and cytochrome c1 heme lyase apparently have different and nonoverlapping substrate specificities

    Translocation arrest by reversible folding of a precursor protein imported into mitochondria

    Passage of precursor proteins through translocation contact sites of mitochondria was investigated by studying the import of a fusion protein consisting of the NH2-terminal 167 amino acids of yeast cytochrome b2 precursor and the complete mouse dihydrofolate reductase. Isolated mitochondria of Neurospora crassa readily imported the fusion protein. In the presence of methotrexate import was halted and a stable intermediate spanning both mitochondrial membranes at translocation contact sites accumulated. The complete dihydrofolate reductase moiety in this intermediate was external to the outer membrane, and the 136 amino acid residues of the cytochrome b2 moiety remaining after cleavage by the matrix processing peptidase spanned both outer and inner membranes. Removal of methotrexate led to import of the intermediate retained at the contact site into the matrix. Thus unfolding at the surface of the outer mitochondrial membrane is a prerequisite for passage through translocation contact sites. The membrane-spanning intermediate was used to estimate the number of translocation sites. Saturation was reached at 70 pmol intermediate per milligram of mitochondrial protein. This amount of translocation intermediates was calculated to occupy approximately 1% of the total surface of the outer membrane. The morphometrically determined area of close contact between outer and inner membranes corresponded to approximately 7% of the total outer membrane surface. Accumulation of the intermediate inhibited the import of other precursor proteins suggesting that different precursor proteins are using common translocation contact sites.     Protein folding causes an arrest of preprotein translocation into mitochondria in vivo

    With vital yeast cells, a hybrid protein consisting of the amino- terminal third of the precursor to cytochrome b2 and of the entire dihydrofolate reductase was arrested on the import pathway into mitochondria. Accumulation of the protein in the mitochondrial membranes was achieved by inducing a stable tertiary structure of the dihydrofolate reductase domain. Thereby, three salient features of mitochondrial protein uptake in vivo were demonstrated: its posttranslational character; the requirement for unfolding of precursors; and import through translocation contact sites. The permanent occupation of translocation sites by the fusion protein inhibited the import of other precursors; it did, however, not lead to leakage of mitochondrial ions, implying the existence of a channel that is sealed around the membrane spanning polypeptide segment

    Looking through the microscope: Microbes as a challenge for theorising biocentrism within environmental ethics

    While in the humanities and social sciences at large we can observe posthumanist developments that engage with the microbiome, microbes are still not a major topic of discussion within environmental ethics. That the environmental ethics literature has not engaged extensively with this topic is surprising considering the range of theoretical challenges (and opportunities) it poses for environmental theorising. So, this paper is ‘looking through the microscope’ from an environmental ethics angle in order to see how these little beings challenge what we consider to be ethically relevant and how we conduct moral theorising. Especially interesting is how a focus on microbes can simultaneously support and challenge individualist biocentric intuitions and theories, which attribute moral standing to (some) microbes. Accordingly, the main aim of this paper is to lay out crucial aspects of these challenges and present some initial arguments about why not all of them pose a serious threat to biocentric theorising—including biocentric theories of interspecies justice. The three challenges discussed are (1) the moral significance challenge, (2) the self-defence predicament, and (3) undermining individualist biocentric intuitions

    Scanning Hyperspectral Imaging for In Situ Biogeochemical Analysis of Lake Sediment Cores: Review of Recent Developments

    Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in situ core scanning has emerged as a valuable and novel tool for rapid and non-destructive biogeochemical analysis of lake sediment cores. Variations in sediment composition can be assessed directly from fresh sediment surfaces at ultra-high-resolution (40–300 μm measurement resolution) based on spectral profiles of light reflected from sediments in visible, near infrared, and short-wave infrared wavelengths (400–2500 nm). Here, we review recent methodological developments in this new and growing field of research, as well as applications of this technique for paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental studies. Hyperspectral imaging of sediment cores has been demonstrated to effectively track variations in sedimentary pigments, organic matter, grain size, minerogenic components, and other sedimentary features. These biogeochemical variables record information about past climatic conditions, paleoproductivity, past hypolimnetic anoxia, aeolian input, volcanic eruptions, earthquake and flood frequencies, and other variables of environmental relevance. HSI has been applied to study seasonal and inter-annual environmental variability as recorded in individual varves (annually laminated sediments) or to study sedimentary records covering long glacial–interglacial time-scales (>10,000 years)
