Analysis and characterization of heparin impurities
This review discusses recent developments in analytical methods available for the sensitive separation, detection and structural characterization of heparin contaminants. The adulteration of raw heparin with oversulfated chondroitin sulfate (OSCS) in 2007–2008 spawned a global crisis resulting in extensive revisions to the pharmacopeia monographs on heparin and prompting the FDA to recommend the development of additional physicochemical methods for the analysis of heparin purity. The analytical chemistry community quickly responded to this challenge, developing a wide variety of innovative approaches, several of which are reported in this special issue. This review provides an overview of methods of heparin isolation and digestion, discusses known heparin contaminants, including OSCS, and summarizes recent publications on heparin impurity analysis using sensors, near-IR, Raman, and NMR spectroscopy, as well as electrophoretic and chromatographic separations
Mu2e Technical Design Report
The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor
violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity
approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best
limits for this process. The experiment's sensitivity offers discovery
potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well
beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the preliminary design of the
proposed Mu2e experiment. This document was created in partial fulfillment of
the requirements necessary to obtain DOE CD-2 approval.Comment: compressed file, 888 pages, 621 figures, 126 tables; full resolution

Solution to excessive vibration of floors in a steel structured industrial building
W niniejszej pracy zajęto się problemem drgań pojawiających się w wielu budynkach przemysłowych. W latach 2003-2005 sprawdzono dwa budynki w kopalni węgla "Lubelski Węgiel S.A." This paper deals with the problem of vibration that occurs in many industrial buildings. It covers the complete procedure of handling such tasks. Two buildings in a "Lubelski Wegiel S.A." coal mine were examined in 2003 - 2005. Some years after building vibration of floors appeared (Figs 2-3). It was caused probably by modification in the building structures or improper maintenance of machines. Measurements and numerical simulations (Figs 4-5 and Tab. 1) showed that resonance appeared. It was stated that main elements of the structure were not in danger and vibration concern the floors only. Necessary modifications of the structures were designed (Figs 6-7). Testing measurements after bringing them into effect were conducted (Figs 8-11)
Relationship between the intake of energy and basic nutrients and the BMI values in group of children aged 10-12
Background. According to the WHO data in January 2007, 14 million children were overweight in the countries of the
European Union. The problem of childhood obesity should be considered as one of the biggest challenges facing twentyfirst
century nutrition and pediatrics.
Objective. The aim of this study was to show the correlation between energy, basic nutrients intake and BMI of school
children aged 10-12 years, using Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
Material and Methods. 169 pupils (69 from Krakow and 100 from Skawina), aged 10-12, participated in these studies.
The studies were approved by the Board of Education, school principals and the parents. On the basis of measurements of
weight and height, body mass index (BMI) was calculated. 24 h dietary recalls were collected in the spring and autumn of
2006, for 4 selected days per week.
Results. Intake of energy, total carbohydrate and fat did not met requirements, but intake of protein was too high. Proper
weight, based on BMI values in the population aged 10-12, were found in 74.9% of boys and 81.2% of girls. Deficiencies in
body weight occurred in 4.2% and 3.4%, overweight in 15.6% and 10.0% while obesity in 5.3% and 5.4% of respondents.
Conclusions. Inverse correlation was found between the implementation of standards for energy and BMI values of children.
It was observed positive correlation between the consumption of total and animal protein and BMI value.Wprowadzenie. Według danych WHO z 2007 roku, w krajach Unii Europejskiej 14 mln dzieci ma nadwagę. Problem
otyłości u dzieci należy uznać za jedno z największych wyzwań stojących przed pediatrią XXI wieku.
Cel. Celem badań była próba wykazania korelacji pomiędzy pobraniem energii i podstawowych składników odżywczych
a wartością BMI (Body Mas Index) dzieci szkolnych w wieku 10-12 lat, przy wykorzystaniu technik analizy statystycznej.
Materiał i metody. Badania sposobu żywienia i pomiary antropometryczne przeprowadzono wiosną i jesienią 2006 roku,
w dwóch losowo wybranych Szkołach Podstawowych na terenie Krakowa i Skawiny. Grupę badawczą stanowiło 169
uczniów (69 z Krakowa i 100 ze Skawiny) w wieku 10–12 lat. Na przeprowadzenie badań uzyskano zgodę Kuratorium
Oświaty, dyrekcji szkół oraz zgodę opiekunów każdego z uczniów.
Wyniki. Właściwą masę ciała stwierdzono u 74,9% chłopców i 81,2% dziewcząt. Niedobory masy ciała stwierdzono odpowiednio
u 4,2% i 3,4%, nadwagę u 15,6 i 10,0%, a otyłość u 5,3% i 5,4% badanych.
Wnioski. Stwierdzono odwrotną korelację pomiędzy realizacją normy na energię a wartościami BMI badanych dzieci.
Równocześnie zaobserwowano dodatnią korelację pomiędzy wielkością spożycia białka roślinnego i zwierzęcego oraz
tłuszczów ogółem a wartościami wskaźnika BMI
Assessment of intake of minerals with daily diets by children aged 10-12 years from Malopolska region
Wprowadzenie. Okres młodzieńczy jest czasem dynamicznego wzrostu oraz rozwoju organizmu. W czasie wzrostu i dojrzewania
zachodzą intensywne przemiany w organizmie, a tym samym zwiększa się zapotrzebowanie na energię i składniki
pokarmowe w tym składniki mineralne.
Cel. Celem podjętych badań była ocena pobrania sodu, potasu, wapnia, fosforu, magnezu, żelaza, cynku, miedzi i manganu
z całodziennych racji pokarmowych przez dzieci w wieku 10–12 lat.
Materiał i metody.
Spożycie manganu i potasu w pełni pokrywało
zapotrzebowanie, natomiast sód i sól kuchenna pobierane były w nadmiarze.
Wnioski. Stwierdzone nieprawidłowości w pobraniu składników mineralnych przez dzieci mogą zwiększać ryzyko rozwoju,
chorób dietozależnych w wieku dojrzałym.Background. Adolescence is a time of rapid growth and development of the organism. During intense growth and maturation
changes taking place in the body, it cost higher demand for energy and nutrients including minerals.
Objective. The aim of this study was to assess the intake of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron,
zinc, copper and manganese with daily diets by children aged 10-12 years.
Materials and methods. Assessment of intake of mineral compounds from daily diets was conduced with using 24 hours
recall. Data were collected in spring and autumn of 2006 in randomly selected primary schools in Krakow and Skawina.
Average intake of minerals (Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn) with daily diets by respondents and the meeting of requirements
was estimated with using the computer softwere Diet 2.
Results. In almost all cases intake of minerals with daily diets did not meet requirements. Daily dies of children did not
met requirements for major minerals i.e. calcium and magnese, and for trace minerals copper, zinc, iron. Insufficient intake
of calcium, while fully covering the demand for phosphorus, resulted in improper ratio these minerals in the diet (0.62 at
the recommended, of 1). Intake of manganese and potassium fully covered demand, while the sodium and salt were taken
in excess.
Conclusions. To low intake of minerals compounds by children may increase the risk of development of diet non-communicable
diseases
