Volatile Compounds Produced by Irradiation of Commercial Hams and Frankfurters
Low-dose irradiation (1.6 kGy) of commercially- produced cured, sliced ham and frankfurters resulted in off-odors and off-flavors following the irradiation treatment. Lipid oxidation was not affected by irradiation but gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis showed that several new volatile compounds were produced in the products by irradiation processing. These included heptane, trans-1-butyl-2- methylcyclopropanone, 2-octene toluene and 2- butanone. Changes in odor and flavor of irradiated ham and frankfurters resulting from production of volatile compounds must be controlled before irradiation will be accepted by the industry or by consumers as a means of improved the microbial safety of these products
The Right Place at the Right Time: Creative Spaces in Libraries
Purpose
This essay explores the recent trend in libraries: that of the establishment of spaces specifically set aside for creative work. The rise of these dedicated creative spaces is owed to a confluence of factors that happen to be finding their expression together in recent years. This essay examines the history of these spaces and explores the factors that gave rise to them and will fuel them moving forward.
Design/Methodology/Approach
A viewpoint piece, this essay combines historical research and historical/comparative analyses to examine the ways by which libraries have supported creative work in the past and how they may continue to do so into the 21st century.
Findings
The key threads brought together include a societal recognition of the value of creativity and related skills and attributes; the philosophies, values, and missions of libraries in both their longstanding forms and in recent evolutions; the rise of participatory culture as a result of inexpensive technologies; improved means to build community and share results of efforts; and library experience and historical practice in matters related to creativity. The chapter concludes with advice for those interested in the establishment of such spaces, grounding those reflections in the author’s experiences in developing a new creative space at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Originality/value
While a number of pieces have been written that discuss the practicalities of developing certain kinds of creative spaces, very little has been written that situates these spaces in larger social and library professional contexts; this essay begins to fill that gap
Ising Universality in Three Dimensions: A Monte Carlo Study
We investigate three Ising models on the simple cubic lattice by means of
Monte Carlo methods and finite-size scaling. These models are the spin-1/2
Ising model with nearest-neighbor interactions, a spin-1/2 model with
nearest-neighbor and third-neighbor interactions, and a spin-1 model with
nearest-neighbor interactions. The results are in accurate agreement with the
hypothesis of universality. Analysis of the finite-size scaling behavior
reveals corrections beyond those caused by the leading irrelevant scaling
field. We find that the correction-to-scaling amplitudes are strongly dependent
on the introduction of further-neighbor interactions or a third spin state. In
a spin-1 Ising model, these corrections appear to be very small. This is very
helpful for the determination of the universal constants of the Ising model.
The renormalization exponents of the Ising model are determined as y_t = 1.587
(2), y_h = 2.4815 (15) and y_i = -0.82 (6). The universal ratio Q =
^2/ is equal to 0.6233 (4) for periodic systems with cubic symmetry.
The critical point of the nearest-neighbor spin-1/2 model is K_c=0.2216546

Colloidal suspensions in modulated light fields
Periodically-modulated potentials in the form of light fields have previously
been applied to induce reversible phase transitions in dilute colloidal systems
with long-range interactions. Here we investigate whether similar transitions
can be induced in very dense systems, where inter-particle contacts are
important. Using microscopy we show that particles in such systems are indeed
strongly affected by modulated potentials. We discuss technical aspects
relevant to generating the light-induced potentials and to imaging
simultaneously the particles. We also consider what happens when the particle
size is comparable with the modulation wavelength. The effects of selected

Potential use of spectral reflectance indices as a selection tool for grain yield in winter wheat under Great Plains conditions
Selection criteria that would facilitate increased genetic gain for grain yield would be considered advantageous in plant breeding programs. We evaluated the potential of spectral reflectance indices (SRI) for assessing grain yield variability in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes under Great Plains conditions. One experiment was conducted at two locations on the Oklahoma State University research farms for 1 yr, and two experiments were conducted for 2 yr at a single location. The first experiment included 25 winter wheat cultivars from the Great Plains, and the other two experiments contained two groups of 25 F4:6 and F4:7 recombinant inbred lines. Six reported SRI (red and green normalized difference vegetation index, RNDVI, GNDVI; simple ratio, SR; water index, WI; normalized water indices 1 and 2, NWI-1 and NWI-2), and two new normalized water indices (NWI-3 and NWI-4) were calculated at booting, heading, and early grain-filling stages using a FieldSpec UV/VNIR spectroradiometer. Significant genotypic variation was observed for SRI and growth stages, though the booting stage was least associated with grain yield. The relationships of grain yield with WI and NWI were stronger than with the RNDVI and SR. The WI and the NWI performed better in identifying superior genotypes, either at any individual growth stage or in a combination of growth stages. Our study clearly demonstrated the potential of using SRI as a selection tool for grain yield in a winter wheat breeding program.Peer reviewedPlant and Soil Science
