The Serum Level of Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 and Calcium-Phosphate Homeostasis in Obese Perimenopausal Women
Plasma FGF-23 concentrations and its relationship with calcium-phosphate homeostasis were evaluated in 48 perimenopausal obese women and in 29 nonobese controls. Serum parathyroid hormone, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, CTX1, osteocalcin, total calcium, phosphorus, creatinine, and plasma intact FGF-23 concentrations were assessed. DXA of lumbar spine and femoral neck was performed to determine bone mineral density (BMD). Plasma iFGF-23 concentration was significantly higher in obese patients (by 42%) and correlated with age and BMD of proximal femur (R = −0.346; R = 0.285, resp.) but not with markers of bone turnover. However, serum phosphorus level in obese subjects was significantly lower. iFGF-23 concentration correlated significantly with body mass index (R = 0.292) and fat content (R = 0.259) in all study subjects. Moreover, a significant correlation between iFGF-23 and iPTH (R = 0.254) was found. No correlation between serum phosphorus or eGFR and plasma iFGF-23 and between eGFR and serum phosphorus was found. Elevated serum iFGF-23 concentration may partially explain lower phosphorus levels in the obese and seems not to reflect bone turnover
Quantitative method of evaluating for recognize people, based on thermograms
Abstract This article present quantitative method of evaluating for recognize people, based on thermograms. The main purpose of the research was to write a computer program for quantitative method of evaluating for recognize people, based on thermograms. The application makes a selection of discrimination properties from thermal image -the analyze is provided for I level statistical parameters obtained from luminance histogram and II level statistical parameters obtained from: cooccurrence matrix parameterised by offset (4 directions and 3 neighborhoods), luminance matrix (for mask 3x3 5x5), Run Length Matrix, wavelet transform. The best discrimination parameters are selected by Fisher-Tippett. The artificial neural network (ANN) is used to determine the number of people from thermograms
Anticonvulsant and reproductive toxicological studies of the imidazole-based histamine H3R antagonist 2-18 in mice
The imidazole-based H3R antagonist 2-18 with high in vitro H3R antagonist affinity, excellent in vitro selectivity profile, and high in vivo H3R antagonist potency was tested for its anticonvulsant effect in maximal electroshock (MES)-induced convulsions in mice having valproic acid (VPA) as a reference antiepileptic drug (AED). Additionally, H3R antagonist 2-18 was evaluated for its reproductive toxicity in the same animal species. The results show that acute systemic administration (intraperitoneal; i.p.) of H3R antagonist 2-18 (7.5, 15, 30, and 60 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly and dose dependently protected male as well as female mice against MES-induced convulsion. The protective action observed for H3R antagonist 2-18 in both mice sexes was comparable to that of VPA and was reversed when mice were pretreated with the selective H3R agonist (R)-alpha-methylhistamine (RAMH, 10 mg/kg, i.p.). Moreover, the results show that acute systemic administration of single (7.5, 15, 30, or 60 mg/kg, i.p.) or multiple doses (15×3 mg/kg, i.p.) of H3R antagonist 2-18 on gestation day (GD) 8 or 13 did not affect the maternal body weight of mice when compared with the control group. Furthermore, no significant differences were observed in the average number of implantations and resorptions between the control and H3R antagonist 2-18-treated group at the early stages of gestation and the organogenesis period. However, oral treatment with H3R antagonist 2-18 (15 mg/kg) on GD 8 induced a reduced number of live embryos when compared with the i.p.-treated mice. In addition, no significant changes in the fetal body and placental weights were observed after injection of H3R antagonist 2-18 with all selected doses. However, three dose groups of i.p. and oral 15 mg/kg on GD 13 significantly affected the placental weight when compared with control group. Notably, the treatment of pregnant female with the H3R antagonist 2-18 did not produce significant malformation in the fetus in both groups. In conclusion, the novel H3R antagonist 2-18 proves to be a very safe compound and displays a low incidence of malformations, demonstrating that H3R antagonist 2-18 may have a potential future therapeutic value in epilepsy
Components of metabolic syndrome in relation to plasma levels of retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) in a cohort of people aged 65 years and older
Purpose Elevated plasma concentration of retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) has recently emerged as a potential risk factor
as a component of developing metabolic syndrome (MS). Therefore, this study aimed to analyse the relationship between
components of MS and concentrations of plasma RBP4 in a population of subjects 65 years and older.
Methods The study sample consisted of 3038 (1591 male) participants of the PolSenior study, aged 65 years and older.
Serum lipid profile, concentrations of RBP4, glucose, insulin, C-reactive protein, IL-6, and activity of aminotransferases were
measured. Nutritional status (BMI/waist circumference) and treatment with statins and fibrates were evaluated. Glomerular
filtration rate (eGFR), de Ritis ratio, and fatty liver index (FLI), as well as HOMA-IR were calculated.
Results Our study revealed a strong relationship between components of MS and RBP4 in both sexes: plasma RBP4 levels
were increased in men by at least 3×, and in women by at least 4×. Hypertriglyceridemia was most strongly associated with
elevated plasma RBP4 levels. Multivariate, sex-adjusted regression analysis demonstrated that chronic kidney disease [OR
1.86 (95% CI 1.78-1.94)], hypertriglyceridemia [OR 1.52 (1.24-1.87)], hypertension [OR 1.15 (1.12-1.19)], low serum
HDL cholesterol [OR 0.94 (0.92-0.97)], and age > 80 years [OR 0.86 (0.81-0.90)] were each independently associated with
RBP4 concentration (all p < 0.001).
Conclusions In Caucasians 65 years and older, RBP4 serum levels are associated with a number of components of MS,
independent of sex and kidney function. Hypertriglyceridemia as a component of MS is most signifcantly related to RBP4
concentration
Using muon rings for the optical throughput calibration of the SST-1M prototype for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) are ground-based instruments
devoted to the study of very high energy gamma-rays coming from space. The
detection technique consists of observing images created by the Cherenkov light
emitted when gamma rays, or more generally cosmic rays, propagate through the
atmosphere. While in the case of protons or gamma-rays the images present a
filled and more or less elongated shape, energetic muons penetrating the
atmosphere are visualised as characteristic circular rings or arcs. A
relatively simple analysis of the ring images allows the reconstruction of all
the relevant parameters of the detected muons, such as the energy, the impact
parameter, and the incoming direction, with the final aim to use them to
calibrate the total optical throughput of the given IACT telescope. We present
the results of preliminary studies on the use of images created by muons as
optical throughput calibrators of the single mirror small size telescope
prototype SST-1M proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array.Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference

DigiCam - Fully Digital Compact Read-out and Trigger Electronics for the SST-1M Telescope proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The SST-1M is one of three prototype small-sized telescope designs proposed
for the Cherenkov Telescope Array, and is built by a consortium of Polish and
Swiss institutions. The SST-1M will operate with DigiCam - an innovative,
compact camera with fully digital read-out and trigger electronics. A high
level of integration will be achieved by massively deploying state-of-the-art
multi-gigabit transmission channels, beginning from the ADC flash converters,
through the internal data and trigger signals transmission over backplanes and
cables, to the camera's server link. Such an approach makes it possible to
design the camera to fit the size and weight requirements of the SST-1M
exactly, and provide low power consumption, high reliability and long lifetime.
The structure of the digital electronics will be presented, along with main
physical building blocks and the internal architecture of FPGA functional
subsystems.Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference

Photometric observations of Epsilon Aurigae during the eclipse of 2009-2011
Epsilon Aurigae is a bright binary system, in which an F0 supergiant is eclipsed by a dark disk around the companion, every 27.1 years. Although the star has been observed and studied for nearly two centuries, it remains an usolved mystery. For the latest ε Aur eclipse, which occurred in 2009-2011, an international observing campaign was organized. In this publication, multicolor BV R photometric observations obtained in the framework of this campaign, are presented. Part of these data have been corrected for atmospheric extinction and transformed to the standard Johnson's photometric system
