    ESTIMATION OF WHEAT ACREAGE RESPONSE FUNCTIONS FOR THE NORTHWEST

    Acreage response functions for wheat are fitted to aggregate data and pooled time-series and cross-sectional data for the Northwest. It was hypothesized that the pooled data approach provides a useful alternative to using aggregate data since it requires fewer timer-series observations for reliable parameter estimation and it does not require the assumption of constant acreage response elasticities throughout the region. The results of this study verify this hypothesis as well as indicate that regional response elasticities for Northwest wheat acreage may differ greatly from national estimates.Crop Production/Industries,

    An investigation into the effect on skin surface temperature of three cryotherapy modalities

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate the comparative cooling effect at the knee, of Crushed Ice and two commonly used commercial cryotherapy modalities, following a clinically relevant application of 20 minutes. DESIGN: Within subjects, randomised cross over design. SETTING: University Laboratory PARTICIPANTS: Eleven healthy male participants MAIN OUTCOME Measures: Skin temperature over the anterior knee measured by thermal imaging camera. RESULTS: Mean absolute baseline skin surface temperature (Tsk) was 28.4ºC (±1.2 ºC). The greatest reduction in Tsk was produced by Crushed Ice D14.6 ºC (±3.7 ºC) resulting in an absolute Tsk of 13.8 ºC; followed by Ice Man D12.3 ºC (±2.4 ºC) resulting in an absolute Tsk of 16.1ºC and then Arctic Flow D4.9 ºC (±1.3 ºC) resulting in an absolute Tsk of 23.5ºC. One-way ANOVA revealed significant differences (p<.05) between modalities for change in Tsk. CONCLUSIONS: Crushed Ice and Ice Man produced very similar results following a 20 minute application to healthy adult male knees, however only Crushed Ice resulted in a skin temperature in the desired 10-15°C therapeutic range, results for Ice Man were just above this range. The resultant skin temperature following a similar application of Arctic Flow was well above the therapeutic range

    An Invertible Linearization Map for the Quartic Oscillator

    The set of world lines for the non-relativistic quartic oscillator satisfying Newton's equation of motion for all space and time in 1-1 dimensions with no constraints other than the "spring" restoring force is shown to be equivalent (1-1-onto) to the corresponding set for the harmonic oscillator. This is established via an energy preserving invertible linearization map which consists of an explicit nonlinear algebraic deformation of coordinates and a nonlinear deformation of time coordinates involving a quadrature. In the context stated, the map also explicitly solves Newton's equation for the quartic oscillator for arbitrary initial data on the real line. This map is extended to all attractive potentials given by even powers of the space coordinate. It thus provides classes of new solutions to the initial value problem for all these potentials

    Muscle Development and Lineage-Specific Expression of CiMDF, the MyoD-Family Gene of Ciona intestinalis

    AbstractThe expression pattern of CiMDF, the MyoD-family gene of Ciona intestinalis, was analyzed in unmanipulated and microsurgically derived partial embryos. CiMDF encodes two transcripts during development (coding for distinct proteins), the smaller of which, CiMDFa, was detected in maternal RNA. Zygotic activity of CiMDF initiated in cleaving embryos of 32–64 cells. Both CiMDFa and CiMDFb transcripts were detected at this time; however, CiMDFa accumulated more rapidly before declining in abundance such that, by the early tail-formation stage, CiMDFb was more prevalent. Microsurgical isolations of various lineage blastomeres from the eight-cell stage were used to analyze CiMDF expression in the two embryonic lineages that give rise to larval tail muscle—autonomously specified primary cells and conditionally specified secondary cells. CiMDFa and CiMDFb transcripts were detected in both lineages, suggesting that neither functioned in a lineage-specific manner. The data also demonstrated that CiMDF expression was autonomous in the primary lineage (i.e., cells derived from the B4.1 blastomeres) and correlated with histospecific differentiation of muscle. In the secondary lineage (i.e., cells derived from the A4.1 and b4.2 blastomeres), CiMDF expression was conditional and, as in the primary lineage, correlated with muscle differentiation. These experiments reveal similar patterns of CiMDF activity in the primary and secondary muscle lineages and imply a requirement for the expression of this gene in both lineages during larval tail muscle development

    Accuracy of a video odometry system for trains

    Reliable Data Systems is developing a video-based odometry system that enables trains to measure velocities and distances travelled without the need for trackside infrastructure. A camera is fixed in the cab, taking images of the track immediately ahead, at rates in the range 25–50 frames per second. The images in successive frames are ‘unwarped’ to provide a plan view of the track and then matched, to produce an ‘optical flow’ that measures the distance travelled. The Study Group was asked to investigate ways of putting bounds on the accuracy of such a system, and to suggest any improvements that might be made. The work performed in the week followed three strands: (a) an understanding of how deviations from the camera’s calibrated position lead to errors in the train’s calculated position and velocity; (b) development of models for the train suspension, designed to place bounds on these deviations; and (c) the performance of the associated image processing algorithms

    Patients afflicted with ulcerative colitis (UC) are at increased risk of colorectal cancer. While its causes are not fully understood, UC is associated with defects in colonic epithelial barriers that sustain inflammation of the colon mucosa caused by recruitment of lymphocytes and neutrophils into the lamina propria. Based on genetic evidence that attenuation of the bridging integrator 1 (Bin1) gene can limit UC pathogenicity in animals, we have explored Bin1 targeting as a therapeutic option. Early feasibility studies in the dextran sodium sulfate mouse model of experimental colitis showed that administration of a cell-penetrating Bin1 monoclonal antibody (Bin1 mAb 99D) could prevent lesion formation in the colon mucosa in part by preventing rupture of lymphoid follicles. In vivo administration of Bin1 mAb altered tight junction protein expression and cecal barrier function.
