Patterns of suicide mortality in England and Wales before and after the suicide of the actor Robin Williams
PURPOSE: There is international evidence supporting an association between sensational reporting of suicide and a subsequent increase in local suicide rates, particularly where reporting the death of a celebrity. We aimed to explore whether the observed increase in suicides in the United States, Canada and Australia in the 5Â months following the 2014 suicide of the popular actor Robin Williams was also observed in England and Wales. METHOD: We used interrupted time-series analysis and a seasonal autoregressive integrated moving averages (SARIMA) model to estimate the expected number of suicides during the 5 months following Williams' death using monthly suicide count data for England and Wales from the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) 2013-2014. RESULTS: Compared with the observed 2051 suicide deaths in all age groups from August to December 2014, we estimated that we would have expected 1949 suicides over the same period, representing no statistically significant excess. CONCLUSIONS: This finding is an outlier among previous studies and contrasts with the approximately 10% increase in suicides found in similar analyses conducted in other high-income English-speaking countries with established media reporting guidelines
Automated Model-based Attack Tree Analysis using HiP-HOPS
As Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) grow increasingly complex and interact with external CPS, system security remains a nontrivial challenge that continues to scale accordingly, with potentially devastating consequences if left unchecked. While there is a significant body of work on system security found in industry practice, manual diagnosis of security vulnerabilities is still widely applied. Such approaches are typically resource-intensive, scale poorly and introduce additional risk due to human error. In this paper, a model-based approach for Security Attack Tree analysis using the HiP-HOPS dependability analysis tool is presented. The approach is demonstrated within the context of a simple web-based medical application to automatically generate attack trees, encapsulated as Digital Dependability Identities (DDIs), for offline security analysis. The paper goes on to present how the produced DDIs can be used to approach security maintenance, identifying security capabilities and controls to counter diagnosed vulnerabilities

Emergence of a Small-World Functional Network in Cultured Neurons
The functional networks of cultured neurons exhibit complex network properties similar to those found in vivo. Starting from random seeding, cultures undergo significant reorganization during the initial period in vitro, yet despite providing an ideal platform for observing developmental changes in neuronal connectivity, little is known about how a complex functional network evolves from isolated neurons. In the present study, evolution of functional connectivity was estimated from correlations of spontaneous activity. Network properties were quantified using complex measures from graph theory and used to compare cultures at different stages of development during the first 5 weeks in vitro. Networks obtained from young cultures (14 days in vitro) exhibited a random topology, which evolved to a small-world topology during maturation. The topology change was accompanied by an increased presence of highly connected areas (hubs) and network efficiency increased with age. The small-world topology balances integration of network areas with segregation of specialized processing units. The emergence of such network structure in cultured neurons, despite a lack of external input, points to complex intrinsic biological mechanisms. Moreover, the functional network of cultures at mature ages is efficient and highly suited to complex processing tasks
Maternal and offspring intelligence in relation to BMI across childhood and adolescence
Objective:
The present study tested the association between both mothersâ and offspringâs intelligence and offspringâs body mass index (BMI) in youth.
Method:
Participants were members of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY-79) Children and Young Adults cohort (nâ=â11,512) and their biological mothers who were members of the NLSY-79 (nâ=â4932). Offspringâs IQ was measured with the Peabody Individual Achievement Test (PIAT). Mothersâ IQ was measured with the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). A series of regression analyses tested the association between IQ and offspringâs BMI by age group, while adjusting for pre-pregnancy BMI and family SES. The analyses were stratified by sex and ethnicity (non-Black and non-Hispanic, Black, and Hispanic).
Results:
The following associations were observed in the fully adjusted analyses. For the non-Blacks and non-Hispanics, a SD increment in mothersâ IQ was negatively associated with daughtersâ BMI across all age-groups, ranging from ÎČâ=ââ0.12 (95% CI â0.22 to â0.02, pâ=â0.021) in late childhood, to ÎČâ=ââ0.17 (95% C.I. â0.27 to â0.07, pâ=â0001), in early adolescence and a SD increment in boysâ IQ was positively associated with their BMI in early adolescence ÎČâ=â0.09 (95% CI 0.01â0.18, pâ=â0.031). For Blacks, there was a non-linear relationship between mothersâ IQ and daughtersâ BMI across childhood and between girlsâ IQ and BMI across adolescence. There was a positive association between mothersâ IQ and sonsâ BMI in early adolescence (ÎČâ=â0.17, 95% CI 0.02â0.32, pâ=â0.030). For Hispanic boys, there was a positive IQ-BMI association in late childhood (ÎČâ=â0.19, 95% CI 0.05â0.33, pâ=â0.008) and early adolescence (ÎČâ=â0.17, 95% CI 0.04â0.31, pâ=â0.014).
Conclusion:
Mothersâ IQ and offspringâs IQ were associated with offspringâs BMI. The relationships varied in direction and strength across ethnicity, age group and sex. Obesity interventions may benefit from acknowledging the heterogeneous influence that intelligence has on childhood BMI
Typology of adults diagnosed with mental disorders based on socio-demographics and clinical and service use characteristics
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mental disorder is a leading cause of morbidity worldwide. Its cost and negative impact on productivity are substantial. Consequently, improving mental health-care system efficiency - especially service utilisation - is a priority. Few studies have explored the use of services by specific subgroups of persons with mental disorder; a better understanding of these individuals is key to improving service planning. This study develops a typology of individuals, diagnosed with mental disorder in a 12-month period, based on their individual characteristics and use of services within a Canadian urban catchment area of 258,000 persons served by a psychiatric hospital.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From among the 2,443 people who took part in the survey, 406 (17%) experienced at least one episode of mental disorder (as per the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI)) in the 12 months pre-interview. These individuals were selected for cluster analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Analysis yielded four user clusters: people who experienced mainly anxiety disorder; depressive disorder; alcohol and/or drug disorder; and multiple mental and dependence disorder. Two clusters were more closely associated with females and anxiety or depressive disorders. In the two other clusters, males were over-represented compared with the sample as a whole, namely, substance abuses with or without concomitant mental disorder. Clusters with the greatest number of mental disorders per subject used a greater number of mental health-care services. Conversely, clusters associated exclusively with dependence disorders used few services.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The study found considerable heterogeneity among socio-demographic characteristics, number of disorders, and number of health-care services used by individuals with mental or dependence disorders. Cluster analysis revealed important differences in service use with regard to gender and age. It reinforces the relevance of developing targeted programs for subgroups of individuals with mental and/or dependence disorders. Strategies aimed at changing low service users' attitude (youths and males) or instituting specialised programs for that particular clientele should be promoted. Finally, as concomitant disorders are frequent among individuals with mental disorder, psychological services and/or addiction programs must be prioritised as components of integrated services when planning treatment.</p
What should an ideal spinal injury classification system consist of? A methodological review and conceptual proposal for future classifications
Since Böhler published the first categorization of spinal injuries based on plain radiographic examinations in 1929, numerous classifications have been proposed. Despite all these efforts, however, only a few have been tested for reliability and validity. This methodological, conceptual review summarizes that a spinal injury classification system should be clinically relevant, reliable and accurate. The clinical relevance of a classification is directly related to its content validity. The ideal content of a spinal injury classification should only include injury characteristics of the vertebral column, is primarily based on the increasingly routinely performed CT imaging, and is clearly distinctive from severity scales and treatment algorithms. Clearly defined observation and conversion criteria are crucial determinants of classification systemsâ reliability and accuracy. Ideally, two principle spinal injury characteristics should be easy to discern on diagnostic images: the specific location and morphology of the injured spinal structure. Given the current evidence and diagnostic imaging technology, descriptions of the mechanisms of injury and ligamentous injury should not be included in a spinal injury classification. The presence of concomitant neurologic deficits can be integrated in a spinal injury severity scale, which in turn can be considered in a spinal injury treatment algorithm. Ideally, a validation pathway of a spinal injury classification system should be completed prior to its clinical and scientific implementation. This review provides a methodological concept which might be considered prior to the synthesis of new or modified spinal injury classifications
High-Performance Work Systems and Organizational Performance in Emerging Economies: Evidence from MNEs in Turkey
This study examines the association between the usage of high-performance work systems (HPWS) by subsidiaries of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in Turkey and employee and subsidiary level outcomes. The study is based on a survey of 148 MNE subsidiaries operating in Turkey. The results show that the usage of HPWS has a significant positive impact on employee effectiveness. However, their impact on employee skills and development, and organizational financial performance are far less clear. Our findings highlight the extent to which HWPS need to be adapted to take account of context-specific institutional realities. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
Management control systems in innovation companies: A literature based framework
Past research has traditionally argued that management control systems (MCSs) may present a hindrance to the creativity of innovation companies. This theoretical paper surveys the literature to focus an investigation on the MCSs of innovation companies. Within the object of control paradigm the paper develops and presents a theoretical model of the impact of eleven external, organisational and innovation related contingency factors on the MCSs in companies that engage in innovation activities. We also suggest measures for further empirical research. By formulating hypotheses on 43 potential interactions the model predicts contradictory influences on two direct control categories, results and action control, but stresses the importance of two indirect categories, personnel and cultural control. More specifically, the high levels of technological complexity and innovation capability in this type of company are expected to be negatively associated with the application of results and action control, whereas personnel and cultural seem to be more appropriate. Furthermore, important sources of finance, venture capital and public funding, are both hypothesised to be positively associated with the application of results, action and personnel control; whereas only public funding is predicted to be positively related to the application of cultural control. The principal contribution of this paper lies in synthesising the literature to provide a model of the impact of a unique set of eleven contingency factors for innovation companies on a broad scope of controls. In addition, the contingency model, if empirically validated, would add value by inferring the particular forms of management control which would be beneficial in innovative company settings. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
