    Gender comparison of young people charged with murder in England and Wales

    This study investigated gender differences regarding young people charged with murder in England and Wales. A sample of 318 cases were collected from the Home Office’s Homicide Index and analysed. Of these cases, 93% of the offenders were male and 7% female. The analyses explored gender differences in terms of the offender’s race, offender’s age, victim’s age, victim’s gender, weapon used, offender-victim relationship, and circumstances of the offence. The study found that a female offender was significantly more likely to murder a family member than a male offender, and a male offender was significantly more likely to murder a stranger than a female offender. In addition, a female offender was significantly more likely to murder a victim below the age of 5 than a male offender. Implications for interventions with young people who are charged with murder are discussed

    Offender and offence characteristics of school shooting incidents

    School shootings are a concern due to their impact in the local community. This paper aimed to (a) establish frequent characteristics of the offender and offence, (b) explore the differences between offenders who are over the age of 18 years and those who are younger, and (c) consider the underlying themes of the offence characteristics. Data were collected on 28 cases through accessing resources such as West Law and case studies. The majority of the offenders were Caucasian and US citizens and suffered from depression. Their offences were primarily well planned, involved more than three deaths, and resulted in the offender committing suicide. Pearson’s chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test identified significant differences between the two age groups. Offenders who were 18 years of age or under were more likely to experience depression, be US citizens and be linked to the school. Additionally, offenders who were 18 years of age or under were more likely to have stolen their weapons and made threats prior to the incident. Smallest space analysis revealed four thematic regions in relation to the offence characteristics: making an impact, delivering a message, doing unrestrained activity, and targeting specific individuals.     Virtual integration platform for computational fluid dynamics

    Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools used in shipbuilding industry involve multiple disciplines, such as resistance, manoeuvring, and cavitation. Traditionally, the analysis was performed separately and sequentially in each discipline, which often resulted in conflict and inconsistency of hydrodynamic prediction. In an effort to solve such problems for future CFD computations, a Virtual Integration Platform (VIP) has been developed in the University of Strathclyde within two EU FP6 projects - VIRTUE and SAFEDOR1. The VIP provides a holistic collaborative environment for designers with features such as Project/Process Management, Distributed Tools Integration, Global Optimisation, Version Management, and Knowledge Management. These features enhance collaboration among customers, ship design companies, shipyards, and consultancies not least because they bring together the best expertise and resources around the world. The platform has been tested in seven European ship design companies including consultancies. Its main functionalities along with advances are presented in this paper with two industrial applications

    The recruitment of juvenile marine fishes into the Knysna and Swartvlei estuaries was monitored over 30 months using seine, scoop and cast nets. The relative abundance, seasonality and growth of the dominant species are presented, and includes the Cape stumpnose Rhabdosargus holubi, white steenbras Lithognathus lithognathus, blacktail Diplodus sargus, strepie Sarpa salpa, Cape moony Monodactylus falciformis, southern mullet Liza richardsonii, groovy mullet Liza dumerilii, striped mullet Liza tricuspidens, flathead mullet Mugil cephalus, freshwater mullet Myxus capensis and leervis Lichia amia. Information on a further 12 species is also provided. Recruitment of most fish species into the Swartvlei and Knysna estuaries reaches a peak during summer, which coincides with maximum food resource availability and corresponds to the time when systems along this section of the coast are often open to the sea. Artificial winter breaching of the Swartvlei mouth has occurred in the past, and has generally led to the premature closure of the system and loss of the ‘head’ of water needed for the summer opening. This type of mouth manipulation leads to reduced availability of estuarine nursery areas for marine fishes along the southern Cape coast. Comparisons between the recruitment of juvenile fishes into the Knysna and Swartvlei estuaries indicate that higher densities of most species were recorded in the former system. This is attributed mainly to the fact that the Knysna mouth is deep, permanently open, and has a strong marine influence when compared to the shallow, narrow and seasonally closed Swartvlei mouth. However, in a regional context both Knysna and Swartvlei are large, unpolluted systems, which serve as important nursery areas for many species of fish.
