    IUB Libraries Video Streaming Service: A Technical Overview

    A recording is not available for this presentation.The IUB Libraries Video Streaming Service received its soft launch in the Fall 2008 semester, allowing staff in Wells Library Media and Reserve Services to make both locally-digitized video and digital video files licensed from vendors available for online streaming by members of the IU community. This service was developed by the Digital Library Program in consultation with Media and Reserve Services, based in part upon previous pilots and prototypes supported by both DLP and Library Information Technology. In this presentation, we will demonstrate the functionality of the Video Streaming Service both from the perspective of a student or faculty member viewing a video and a library staff member loading a new video into the system. We will then discuss the technologies used to implement the service, including Adobe Flash Media Server, theffmpeg audio/video encoder, and locally-developed video drop box, content management, and workflow tools

    Investigating the Function of a Small Secreted Protein Family in Physcomitrella Patens

    The correct development of multicellular organisms depends upon the perception of signals secreted by cells in order to co-ordinate cell differentiation. The Physcomitrella patens genome encodes many components of potential signaling systems, including putative receptor proteins and putative secreted protein ligands, yet at present little characterization of these proteins has been carried out. We are currently attempting to characterize the expression pattern and function of a family of 6 secreted proteins exhibiting homology to PrsS, the ligand that controls self-incompatibility (SI) in Papaver rhoeas (field poppy). In poppy, PrsS interacts a receptor on the surface of pollen tubes, PrpS causing SI by programmed cell death. Homologues of this protein (SPH – S-Protein Homologues) exist in dicotyledonous plants and bryophytes but not in other plant taxa. We aim to determine spatiotemporal expression differences between these proteins via reporter gene analysis and qPCR of cDNA. In addition we are in the process of creating targeted gene knockouts for all 6 of the genes in P. patens. We are also searching for receptors of PrpS in Physcomitrella using a bioinformatic strategy alongside phage display. In accomplishing this we hope to determine the function of a small novel secreted protein family in Physcomitrella but in addition we also hope to elucidate the function of SPH proteins in Arabidopsis

    Developing a water market readiness assessment framework

    Water markets are increasingly proposed as a demand-management strategy to deal with water scarcity. Water trading arrangements, on their own, are not about setting bio-physical limits to water-use. Nevertheless, water trading that mitigates scarcity constraints can assist regulators of water resources to keep water-use within limits at the lowest possible cost, and may reduce the cost of restoring water system health. While theoretically attractive, many practitioners have, at best, only a limited understanding of the practical usefulness of markets and how they might be most appropriately deployed. Using lessons learned from jurisdictions around the world where water markets have been implemented, this study attempts to fill the existing water market development gap and provide an initial framework (the water market readiness assessment (WMRA)) to describe the policy and administrative conditions/reforms necessary to enable governments/jurisdictions to develop water trading arrangements that are efficient, equitable and within sustainable limits. Our proposed framework consists of three key steps: 1) an assessment of hydrological and institutional needs; 2) a market evaluation, including assessment of development and implementation issues; and 3) the monitoring, continuous/review and assessment of future needs; with a variety of questions needing assessment at each stage. We apply the framework to three examples: regions in Australia, the United States and Spain. These applications indicate that WMRA can provide key information for water planners to consider on the usefulness of water trading processes to better manage water scarcity; but further practical applications and tests of the framework are required to fully evaluate its effectiveness.This work was supported by the Australian Research Council [FF140100733, DE150100328 and DP140103946], and the Australian National Commission for UNESCO

    All the Lab's a Stage: the Use of Drama to Promote Engagement in Higher Education Science

    Communicating science can be challenging at any educational level. We used informal and experiential learning to engage groups of potential University applicants in one project that involved staging a play in one of the teaching laboratories at the University of Worcester whilst a second project designed a play in house and took this to schools. In the first project the plot centred on stem cell research. School pupils and students from FE Colleges were offered complementary sessions including a lecture exploring the science behind stem cell research, a discussion on ethical aspects involved and a practical using university facilities. We ascertained attitudes to Higher Education in the students participating before and after the event. We found an enhanced view of the science and a highly significant change in attitude to attending University for students taking vocational subjects at FE level. The second project was aimed at exploring attitudes to ethics and animal welfare among a cohort of 15 – 18 year olds. Students engaged with the issues in the drama to a high degree. Our conclusions are that drama is an excellent way to inform potential students about higher education and HE level science in particular. Additionally we demonstrated the importance of events taking place at HE institutions in order to maximise change in attitudes to HE

    Car Cabin Filters as Sampling Devices to Study Bioaerosols Using eDNA and Microbiological Methods

    The aim of this study was to examine whether bioaerosols could be isolated and quantified from used car cabin filters. Car cabin filters are widely available and can provide a vast untapped resource for sampling of bioaerosols in areas with enhanced air pollution. We developed a test system where we exposed car cabin filters to birch pollen under compressed air to represent airflow onto the filter. The flow of pollen within the test system was confirmed by microscopy and real-time PCR. Testing of extraction methods was performed on the most prevalent types of filters in UK cars and confirmed it was possible to extract and quantify viable fungi, birch pollen or proteins from car filters. The main challenge of their use is envisaged to be the lack of temporal resolution as car cabin filters are not routinely changed at intervals greater than 1 year; however, the systematic recording of the different routes driven during the sampling interval has been enabled through the common use of GPS, smartphones or similar technologies. Car filters therefore provide substantial possibilities to monitor exposure of harmful bioaerosols in the polluted traffic regions defined by the road network. This method could also be applied to studying allergen exposure associated with bioaerosols and their delivery into the human respiratory system. These findings demonstrate that car cabin filters have the potential to be used to isolate and quantify a range of bioaerosols including pollen and fungi, as well as fractions of bioaerosols, such as proteins

    An Ecological Reading of the History of the Koala Population of Warrumbungle National Park

    The severe Wambelong fire in 2013 focussed attention on the koalas of Warrumbungle National Park, and highlighted the lack of detailed study into their populations. Here we examine the history of land use and management within and surrounding the Park and how the koala populations have changed through the decades. Before the dedication of the Park in 1953 there was little koala habitat and, at best, a very low-density koala population in and around what became the Park. The koala population grew through the 1970s and 1980s, and by the mid- to late 1990s the Park was known for its strong koala population before the onset of the millennium drought (2001-2009). However, sightings were rare after the drought. The fire compounded the drought, showing that the Park on its own is too small to be a long-term refuge, particularly in an era of climate change. A regional approach to population management is needed, with the Park and the private land surrounding it both necessary for the survival of the local koala population. We have witnessed impact of a severe fire in 2013 on the koala population, although one best understood through an ecological reading of the historical record

    Species, Clusters and the 'Tree of Life': A graph-theoretic perspective

    A hierarchical structure describing the inter-relationships of species has long been a fundamental concept in systematic biology, from Linnean classification through to the more recent quest for a 'Tree of Life.' In this paper we use an approach based on discrete mathematics to address a basic question: Could one delineate this hierarchical structure in nature purely by reference to the 'genealogy' of present-day individuals, which describes how they are related with one another by ancestry through a continuous line of descent? We describe several mathematically precise ways by which one can naturally define collections of subsets of present day individuals so that these subsets are nested (and so form a tree) based purely on the directed graph that describes the ancestry of these individuals.     Estimating the incidence of acute infectious intestinal disease in the community in the UK:A retrospective telephone survey

    Objectives: To estimate the burden of intestinal infectious disease (IID) in the UK and determine whether disease burden estimations using a retrospective study design differ from those using a prospective study design. Design/Setting: A retrospective telephone survey undertaken in each of the four countries comprising the United Kingdom. Participants were randomly asked about illness either in the past 7 or 28 days. Participants: 14,813 individuals for all of whom we had a legible recording of their agreement to participate Outcomes: Self-reported IID, defined as loose stools or clinically significant vomiting lasting less than two weeks, in the absence of a known non-infectious cause. Results: The rate of self-reported IID varied substantially depending on whether asked for illness in the previous 7 or 28 days. After standardising for age and sex, and adjusting for the number of interviews completed each month and the relative size of each UK country, the estimated rate of IID in the 7-day recall group was 1,530 cases per 1,000 person-years (95% CI: 1135 – 2113), while in the 28-day recall group it was 533 cases per 1,000 person-years (95% CI: 377 – 778). There was no significant variation in rates between the four countries. Rates in this study were also higher than in a related prospective study undertaken at the same time. Conclusions: The estimated burden of disease from IID varied dramatically depending on study design. Retrospective studies of IID give higher estimates of disease burden than prospective studies. Of retrospective studies longer recall periods give lower estimated rates than studies with short recall periods. Caution needs to be exercised when comparing studies of self-reported IID as small changes in study design or case definition can markedly affect estimated rates
