Immigrant Job Search in the UK
Most immigrant groups in the UK experience higher unemployment rates than otherwise similar UK born whites. Empirical research to date has attributed this finding to discrimination, lack of English Language fluency and the (non-) transferability of skills acquired before immigration. In this paper, we investigate how the job search methods of unemployed white and ethnic minority immigrants, and their success in exiting unemployment, compare with the UK born, using the panel element of the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, pooled over 1997-2001. Possible attenuation of the G2 DNA damage cell cycle checkpoint in HeLa cells by extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields
BACKGROUND:
The issue remains unresolved as to whether low frequency magnetic fields can affect cell behaviour, with the possibility that they may be in part responsible for the increased incidence of leukaemia in parts of the population exposed to them.
METHODS:
Combined treatment of HeLa cells with gamma-irradiation (1, 3 and 5 Grays) and extra low frequency magnetic fields of ~50 Hz was carried out under rigorously controlled conditions.
RESULTS:
Synchronised cells progressing from S-phase arrived at mitosis on average marginally ahead of irradiation controls not exposed to ELF. In no instance out of a total of twenty separate experiments did this "double-insult" further delay entry of cells into mitosis, as had been anticipated.
CONCLUSION:
This apparently "non-genotoxic" agent (ELF) appears to be capable of affecting cells that would normally arrest for longer in G2, suggesting a weakening of the stringency of the late cycle (G2) checkpoint
To Teach or not to Teach? Panel Data Evidence on the Quitting Decision
The question we address in this paper is which factors influence the quitting decision of public sector teachers in England and Wales, using a nationally representative panel data set over 1997-2003. We document the outcomes of former teachers, fit single and competing-risks duration models and examine the influence of relative pay on retention. Surprisingly, we find that teachers who move to outside employment earn 22% less pay, work longer hours, in largely nonprofessional occupations and mainly stay within the public sector. We estimate that a 10% increase in teachers’ relative pay would reduce annual quitting rates by less than 1%.Teachers, Panel Data, Wages, Quitting

Improved mirror position estimation using resonant quantum smoothing
Quantum parameter estimation, the ability to precisely obtain a classical
value in a quantum system, is very important to many key quantum technologies.
Many of these technologies rely on an optical probe, either coherent or
squeezed states to make a precise measurement of a parameter ultimately limited
by quantum mechanics. We use this technique to theoretically model, simulate
and validate by experiment the measurement and precise estimation of the
position of a cavity mirror. In non-resonant systems, the achieved estimation
enhancement from quantum smoothing over optimal filtering has not exceeded a
factor two, even when squeezed state probes were used. Using a coherent state
probe, we show that using quantum smoothing on a mechanically resonant
structure driven by a resonant forcing function can result significantly
greater improvement in parameter estimation than with non-resonant systems. In
this work, we show that it is possible to achieve a smoothing improvement by a
factor in excess of three times over optimal filtering. By using intra-cavity
light as the probe we obtain finer precision than has been achieved with the
