    A Program for the Genetics of Grammar

    Departing from Lenneberg’s biological conception of language and its de- velopment, this paper first reviews select examples from research on lan- guage development and its interface with genetics before making some specific proposals with regard to how the genetics of grammar could be investigated. The central proposal of this paper is that an important, per- haps necessary, avenue for studying the genetics of grammar is to study the genotypes corresponding to phenotypes of child (and genetically im- paired) versions of the computational system of grammar, as opposed to strictly descriptive measures of a construction or standardized linguistic tests. In some cases, these phenotypes have wide explanatory ability, sug- gesting that they directly involve parts of the computational system of lan- guage. The primary example discussed is the phenotype of the Unique Checking Constraint (UCC). In particular, it is proposed that one could usefully start to investigate the genetic basis for he development of finite- ness, object clitic omission, and related phenomena of the UCC. A second, less developed example here, corresponding to a much later developmen- tal stage, is the Universal Phase Requirement (UPR), regulating verbal pas- sives and many other phenomena in children

    The Shifting Discourse on Third Places: Ideological Implications

    Within the social sciences, literature on third places attempts to assist in the construction of a social concept of “place”. This notion of a place is an idealization of the bridging space with home and family on one side, and work with the rule-based impersonality of life in mass society, on the other. Like the idea of work-life balance—as seen through the vocabulary of placemaking—third places provide people with a place in which there is a balance between the emotive attachments of home and family and the challenge striving for merit and reward in the marketplace. To date, third places have been treated as a unified construct. This paper makes the case that both the discourse and design models used to make sense of third places are significantly different. After reviewing and placing third-place literature in its historical context, we distinguish communitarian, commercial and digital third places. These three types of places—in both their physical and virtual forms—are important parts of the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Subsequently employing a cui bono approach or who benefits framework, we highlight the ways in which ideological points of view imbedded in the varying versions of third places have implications for practice and theory

    The Slow Food Movement: A \u27Big Tent\u27 Ideology

    The Slow Food Movement (SFM) has been characterized as a reminder of the centrality of the kitchen in the “good old days”. It has also been referred to as a poor use of science posing as a rallying point for the beleaguered middle class trying to reclaim psychological territory lost to the fast-paced commercialization of what was once private or leisure time. This paper argues that both these criticisms contain more than a kernel of truth. However, each misses the mark when it comes to explaining the relative successes of SFM. In this paper, we explore SFM’s basic ideological premises. It is neither a simple return to a traditional society nor a poorly formulated anti-consumerist position. Rather, from an ideological framing, SFM employs a “big tent” strategy drawing upon the positions of other lifestyle movements such as voluntary simplicity, localism, green consumption and communitarian social capital movements. This “big tent” of overlapping ideological positions is helpful in creating a credible set of alliances and a mass following. Moreover, SFM insists that a small but basic lifestyle change, namely, investing more quality time in the acquisition, preparation and sharing of fresh food - can ripple outwards and offer benefits to individuals, but also via selective consumption, put pressure on transnational firms, agri-business and banks to heed the demands of those in the “movement”. This paper concludes with a discussion of both the costs and complications of the “big tent” ideology and how SFM has attempted to keep each of these within its reach

    Transverse force on a quantized vortex in a superconductor

    The total transverse force acting on a quantized vortex in a type-II superconductor determines the Hall response in the mixed state, yet a consensus as to its correct form is still lacking. In this paper we present an essentially exact expression for this force, valid in the superclean limit, which was obtained by generalizing the recent work by Thouless, Ao, and Niu [D. J. Thouless, P. Ao, and Q. Niu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 3758 (1996)] on the Magnus force in a neutral superfluid. We find the transverse force per unit length to be f=ρK×Vf = \rho K \times V, where ρ=ρn+ρs\rho = \rho_{n} + \rho_{s} is the sum of the mass densities of the normal and superconducting components, KK is a vector parallel to the line vortex with a magnitude equal to the quantized circulation, and VV is the vortex velocity.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 1 figur

    Monte Carlo simulation method for Laughlin-like states in a disk geometry

    We discuss an alternative accurate Monte Carlo method to calculate the ground-state energy and related quantities for Laughlin states of the fractional quantum Hall effect in a disk geometry. This alternative approach allows us to obtain accurate bulk regime (thermodynamic limit) values for various quantities from Monte Carlo simulations with a small number of particles (much smaller than that needed with standard Monte Carlo approaches).Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

    Comparison of Grammar in Neurodevelopmental Disorders: The Case of Binding in Williams Syndrome and Autism With and Without Language Impairment

    This study investigates whether distinct neurodevelopmental disorders show distinct patterns of impairments in particular grammatical abilities and the relation of those grammatical patterns to general language delays and intellectual disabilities. We studied two disorders (autism and Williams syndrome [WS]) and two distinct properties (Principle A that governs reflexives and Principle B that, together with its associated pragmatic rule, governs pronouns) of the binding module of grammar. These properties are known to have markedly different courses of acquisition in typical development. We compare the knowledge of binding in children with autism with language impairment (ALI) and those with normal language (ALN) to that of children with WS, matched on age to the ALN group, and on age and nonverbal mental age (MA) to the ALI group, as well as to two groups of typically developing (TD) controls, matched on nonverbal MA to ALI and ALN groups. Our results reveal a remarkably different pattern of comprehension of personal pronouns and reflexives in ALI as opposed to ALN, WS, and two groups of TD controls. All five groups demonstrated an equal delay in their comprehension of personal pronouns, in line with widely reported delays in TD literature, argued to be due to delayed pragmatic abilities. However, and most strikingly, the ALI group also showed a pronounced difficulty in comprehension of reflexive pronouns, and particularly of the knowledge that the antecedent of a reflexive must c-command it. The revealed pattern confirms the existence of a particular impairment concerning Principle A in this module of grammar, unrelated to general language delays or cognitive deficits generally present in a large portion of individuals with autism as well as WS, or to general pragmatic deficits, known to be particularly prevalent in the population with autism

    Lorentz shear modulus of fractional quantum Hall states

    We show that the Lorentz shear modulus of macroscopically homogeneous electronic states in the lowest Landau level is proportional to the bulk modulus of an equivalent system of interacting classical particles in the thermodynamic limit. Making use of this correspondence we calculate the Lorentz shear modulus of Laughlin's fractional quantum Hall states at filling factor ν=1/m\nu=1/m (mm an odd integer) and find that it is equal to ±mn/4\pm \hbar mn/4, where nn is the density of particles and the sign depends on the direction of magnetic field. This is in agreement with the recent result obtained by Read in arXiv:0805.2507 and corrects our previous result published in Phys. Rev. B {\bf 76}, 161305 (R) (2007).Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
