    Postcolonial Migration and Citizenship in the Netherlands

    Can formerly colonized subjects and their descendants be full and equal citizens of the former metropoles – and if so, what would that look like? In this blogpost, we explore these politics of belonging in European postcolonial polities by looking at different conceptualizations of the relationship between the Dutch state and Surinamese-Dutch citizens and immigrants. In particular, we look at Dutch state discourses on the “civic integration” of Surinamese in the 2010s, and Surinamese-Dutch organisations’ discourses on family migration rights in the 1970s and 1980s. While Dutch government discourses tend to represent Surinamese-Dutch as too different to belong to the Dutch Nation, Surinamese-Dutch organisations claimed postcolonial citizenship as different and equal

    Bacterial biodiversity drives the evolution of CRISPR-based phage resistance

The final version is available from Springer Nature via the DOI in this record About half of all bacteria carry genes for CRISPR–Cas adaptive immune systems, which provide immunological memory by inserting short DNA sequences from phage and other parasitic DNA elements into CRISPR loci on the host genome. Whereas CRISPR loci evolve rapidly in natural environments, bacterial species typically evolve phage resistance by the mutation or loss of phage receptors under laboratory conditions. Here we report how this discrepancy may in part be explained by differences in the biotic complexity of in vitro and natural environments. Specifically, by using the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its phage DMS3vir, we show that coexistence with other human pathogens amplifies the fitness trade-offs associated with the mutation of phage receptors, and therefore tips the balance in favour of the evolution of CRISPR-based resistance. We also demonstrate that this has important knock-on effects for the virulence of P. aeruginosa, which became attenuated only if the bacteria evolved surface-based resistance. Our data reveal that the biotic complexity of microbial communities in natural environments is an important driver of the evolution of CRISPR–Cas adaptive immunity, with key implications for bacterial fitness and virulence.European CommissionNatural Environment Research Council (NERC

    Is green space in the living environment associated with people's feelings of social safety?

    Abstract. The authors investigate whether the percentage of green space in people's living environ- ment affects their feelings of social safety positively or negatively. More specifically they investigate the extent to which this relationship varies between urban and rural areas, between groups in the community that can be identified as more or less vulnerable, and the extent to which different types of green space exert different influences. The study includes 83736 Dutch citizens who were interviewed about their feelings of social safety. The percentage of green space in the living environment of each respondent was calculated, and data analysed by use of a three-level latent variable model, controlled for individual and environmental background characteristics. The analyses suggest that more green space in people's living environment is associated with enhanced feelings of social safetyöexcept in very strongly urban areas, where enclosed green spaces are associated with reduced feelings of social safety. Contrary to the common image of green space as a dangerous hiding place for criminal activity which causes feelings of insecurity, the results suggest that green space generally enhances feelings of social safety. The results also suggest, however, that green space in the most urban areas is a matter of concern with respect to social safety.

    Aim To determine the presence and location (stroma versus epithelium) of citrullinated proteins in periodontitis tissue as compared to non-periodontitis tissue and synovial tissue of RA patients. Materials & Methods Periodontitis, healthy periodontal and RA-affected synovial tissue samples were collected in addition to buccal swabs. These samples were stained for the presence of citrullinated proteins using polyclonal (Ab5612) and monoclonal (F95) antibodies. Furthermore, Western blotting with F95 was performed on lysates prepared from periodontal and synovial tissues. Results In periodontitis stroma, increased citrullinated protein presence (80%) was observed compared with control stroma (33%), the latter was associated with inflammation of non-periodontitis origin. Periodontal epithelium always stained positive for Ab5612. Noteworthy, only periodontitis-affected epithelium stained positive for F95. All buccal mucosal swabs and 3 of 4 synovial tissue samples stained positive for both Ab5612 and F95. Western blotting with F95 showed presence of similar citrullinated proteins in both periodontitis and RA-affected synovial tissue. Conclusion Within the periodontal stroma, citrullination is an inflammation-depended process. In periodontal epithelium, citrullination is a physiological process. Additional citrullinated proteins are formed in periodontitis, apparently similar to those formed in RA-affected synovial tissue. Periodontitis induced citrullination may play a role in the aetiology of rheumatoid arthritis

The discovery of new antibiotics has come to a relative standstill during the last decade [1], and developing novel approaches to tackle the spread of AMR genes will require significant efforts in the coming years [2]. In 2014, several groups independently demonstrated how CRISPR-Cas (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-CRISPR–associated), a bacterial immune system now widely used for genome editing, can selectively remove AMR genes from bacterial populations.     To meet the needs of the growing passenger traffic market in light of an aging subsonic fleet, a new breed of aircraft must be developed. The Swift is an aircraft that will economically meet these needs by the year 2000. Swift is a 246 passenger, Mach 2.5, luxury airliner. It has been designed to provide the benefit of comfortable, high speed transportation in a safe manner with minimal environmental impact. This report will discuss the features of the Swift aircraft and establish a solid, foundation for this supersonic transport of tomorrow

    Treatment patterns and outcomes in patients with Pancoast tumors: a national cancer database analysis

    Background: Pancoast tumors represent 5% of non-small cell lung cancers. Complete surgical resection and no lymph node involvement are important positive prognostic factors. Previous literature has identified neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment, followed by surgical resection, as the standard of care. But many institutions choose upfront surgery. Our goal was to identify the treatment patterns and outcomes in patients with node-negative Pancoast tumors using the National Cancer Database (NCDB). Methods: The NCDB was queried from 2004 through 2017 to identify all patients who had undergone surgery for a Pancoast tumor. Treatment patterns, including the percentage of patients who received neoadjuvant treatment, were recorded. Logistic regression and survival analyses were used to determine outcomes based on different treatment patterns. Secondary analyses were performed on the cohort who received upfront surgery. Results: A total of 2,910 patients were included in the study. Overall 30- and 90-day mortality were 3% and 7% respectively. Only 25% (717/2,910) of the group received neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment prior to surgery. Patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment experienced significantly improved 90-day survival (P\u3c0.01) and overall survival (P\u3c0.01). When analyzing the cohort who received upfront surgery, there was a statistically significant difference in survival based on adjuvant treatment pattern (P\u3c0.01). Patients in this group who received adjuvant chemoradiation had the best survival, whereas patients who received adjuvant radiation only or no treatment had the worst outcomes. Conclusions: Patients with Pancoast tumors receive neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment in only a quarter of cases nationally. Patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment had improved survival compared to patients who had upfront surgery. Similarly, when surgery is performed first, adjuvant chemoradiation treatment improved survival compared to other adjuvant strategies. These results suggest underutilization of neoadjuvant treatment for patients with node-negative Pancoast tumors. Future studies with a more clearly defined cohort are needed to assess the treatment patterns being utilized on patients with node-negative Pancoast tumors. It will be beneficial to see whether neoadjuvant treatment for Pancoast tumors has increased in recent years
