    Novel techniques for quasi three-dimensional nanofabrication of Transformation Optics devices

    Current nanofabrication is almost exclusively limited to top-down, two-dimensional techniques. As technology moves more deeply into the nano-scale regime, fabrication of new devices with quasi three-dimensional geometries shows great potential. One excellent example of an emerging field that requires this type of non-conformal 3D fabrication technique is the field of Transformation Optics. This field involves transforming and manipulating the optical space through which light propagates. Arbitrarily manipulating the optical space requires advanced fabrication techniques, which are not possible with current two-dimensional fabrication technologies. One step toward quasi three-dimensional nanofabrication involves employing angled deposition allowing new growth mechanisms, and enabling a new realm of quasi three-dimensional fabrication.^ Transformation optics also has potential for having a huge impact on one of the most fundamental and impactful aspects of optics - the capability of fully controlling and manipulating the phase of light. For this purpose, dielectric metamaterial arrays can be fabricated, altering the phase of light transmitted through the structures, while maintaining a high transmittance (low reflection). By fabricating these structures with a high-index material (such as silicon), a large gradient in phase can be implemented by adjusting the material\u27s effective filling fraction. Using these dielectric metamaterial arrays, anomalous refraction and focusing is demonstrated in films with thicknesses less than one wavelength

    Transformations of Group 7 Carbonyl Complexes: Possible Intermediates in a Homogeneous Syngas Conversion Scheme

    A variety of C−H and C−C bond forming reactions of group 7 carbonyl complexes have been studied as potential steps in a homogeneously catalyzed conversion of syngas to C_(2+) compounds. The metal formyl complexes M(CO)_3(PPh_3)_2(CHO) (M = Mn, Re) are substantially stabilized by coordination of boranes BX_3 (X = F, C_6F_5) in the form of novel boroxycarbene complexes M(CO)_3(PPh_3)_2(CHOBX_3), but these boron-stabilized carbenes do not react with hydride sources to undergo further reduction to metal alkyls. The related manganese methoxycarbene cations [Mn(CO)_(5−x)(PPh_3)_x(CHOMe)]+ (x = 1 or 2), obtained by methylation of the formyls, do react with hydrides to form methoxymethyl complexes, which undergo further migratory insertion under an atmosphere of CO. The resulting acyls, cis- and trans-Mn(PPh_3)(CO)_4(C(O)CH_2OMe), can be alkylated to form the cationic carbene complex [Mn(PPh_3)(CO)_4(C(OR)CH_2OMe)]^+, which undergoes a 1,2 hydride shift to form 1,2-dialkoxyethylene, which is displaced from the metal, releasing triflate or diethyl ether adducts of [Mn(PPh_3)(CO)_4]^+. The acyl can also be protonated with HOTf to form a hydroxycarbene complex, which rearranges to Mn(PPh_3)(CO)_4(CH_2COOMe) and is protonolyzed to yield methyl acetate and [Mn(PPh_3)(CO)_4]^+; addition of L (L = PPh_3, CO) to the manganese cation regenerates [Mn(PPh_3)(CO)_4(L)]^+. Since the original formyl complex can be obtained by the reaction of [Mn(PPh_3)(CO)_5]^+ with [PtH(dmpe)_2]^+, which in turn can be generated from H_2, this set of transformations amounts to a stoichiometric cycle for selectively converting H_2 and CO into a C_2 compound under mild conditions

    Probabilistic forecasting of heterogeneous consumer transaction-sales time series

    We present new Bayesian methodology for consumer sales forecasting. With a focus on multi-step ahead forecasting of daily sales of many supermarket items, we adapt dynamic count mixture models to forecast individual customer transactions, and introduce novel dynamic binary cascade models for predicting counts of items per transaction. These transactions-sales models can incorporate time-varying trend, seasonal, price, promotion, random effects and other outlet-specific predictors for individual items. Sequential Bayesian analysis involves fast, parallel filtering on sets of decoupled items and is adaptable across items that may exhibit widely varying characteristics. A multi-scale approach enables information sharing across items with related patterns over time to improve prediction while maintaining scalability to many items. A motivating case study in many-item, multi-period, multi-step ahead supermarket sales forecasting provides examples that demonstrate improved forecast accuracy in multiple metrics, and illustrates the benefits of full probabilistic models for forecast accuracy evaluation and comparison.     Development of reverse-transcription PCR techniques to analyse the density and sex ratio of gametocytes in genetically diverse Plasmodium chabaudi infections

    We have developed cross-genotype and genotype-specific quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) assays to detect and quantify the number of parasites, transmission stages (gametocytes) and male gametocytes in blood stage Plasmodium chabaudi infections. Our cross-genotype assays are reliable, repeatable and generate counts that correlate strongly (R(2)s > 90%) with counts expected from blood smears. Our genotype-specific assays can distinguish and quantify different stages of genetically distinct parasite clones (genotypes) in mixed infections and are as sensitive as our cross-genotype assays. Using these assays we show that gametocyte density and gametocyte sex ratios vary during infections for two genetically distinct parasite lines (genotypes) and present the first data to reveal how sex ratio is affected when each genotype experiences competition in mixed-genotype infections. Successful infection of mosquito vectors depends on both gametocyte density and their sex ratio and we discuss the implications of competition in genetically diverse infections for transmission success

    Scientific Visualization Using the Flow Analysis Software Toolkit (FAST)

    Over the past few years the Flow Analysis Software Toolkit (FAST) has matured into a useful tool for visualizing and analyzing scientific data on high-performance graphics workstations. Originally designed for visualizing the results of fluid dynamics research, FAST has demonstrated its flexibility by being used in several other areas of scientific research. These research areas include earth and space sciences, acid rain and ozone modelling, and automotive design, just to name a few. This paper describes the current status of FAST, including the basic concepts, architecture, existing functionality and features, and some of the known applications for which FAST is being used. A few of the applications, by both NASA and non-NASA agencies, are outlined in more detail. Described in the Outlines are the goals of each visualization project, the techniques or 'tricks' used lo produce the desired results, and custom modifications to FAST, if any, done to further enhance the analysis. Some of the future directions for FAST are also described

    Can Information Widen Socioeconomic Gaps in Postsecondary Aspirations? How College Costs and Returns Affect Parents’ Preferences for Their Children

    To estimate whether information can close socioeconomic gaps in parents’ aspirations for their child’s postsecondary education, we administer a four-armed survey experiment to a nationally representative sample of U.S. parents. After respondents estimate costs of and returns to further education, we ask whether they prefer that their child pursue a four-year degree, a two-year degree, or no further education. Before this question is posed, the treated are first told:(1) the net annual costs of pursuing a four-year and two-year degree in their state,(2) the annual returns to four-year and two-year degrees as compared to no further education in their local area, or(3) both costs and returns. We find that information lowers aspirations overall and widens socioeconomic aspiration gaps.These effects do not vary with the magnitude of error between estimated and actual costs and returns. However, we find positive impacts on aspirations among parents who think their child is academically prepared for college

    New Evidence on the Palaeobiology of the Eureka Sound Formation, Arctic Canada

    The Eureka Sound Formation, a thick sedimentary unit in the Canadian Arctic having a late Cretaceous and/or early Tertiary age, is known to contain plant fossils indicative of a continental origin of deposition and a relatively temperate climate. The Formation was selected for a palaeontological survey in order to determine whether it could, as suggested by distribution of fossil vertebrates in other areas and from evidence of plate tectonics, provide evidence on terrestrial migrations between North America and Europe in the Palaeogene. Fossils of plants, invertebrates and fish were found. They indicated that large parts of the Formation are marine in origin, although other parts are continental and thus could still be interpreted as representing part of a land connection between the northern landmasses
